Your doctor has prescribed pain killers and I've heard that 1) they block feeling the pain even when (though) you are still hurting that part of your back and 2) they can become addictive. Ask the pharmacist if these meds are pain killers or muscle relaxants.
From my years with my chiropractor, I have found it true that the muscles are cramping up in response to the nerve injury (pinch) [your muscles react this way in an attempt to stop you from hurting yourself more. A vicious cycle starts up where the cramped muscles aggravate the nerve and the muscles keep reacting to the hurt nerve (cramping and knotting up all the more).
If your insurance or health plan is flexible enough, try to see an M.D. who is (what's the right word?) chiro-friendly(?). Another opinion about the meds could help. Ibuprofen has become my "friend" because of its anti-inflammatory effects. My doctor checks on my liver function every year to watch out for damage from the ibuprofen.
As with any doctor, don't hesitate to visit a couple of chiropractors and see who/which best makes you feel confident in them.
Oh, and obtain a copy of the x-rays (nowadays they are put on a CD) from your doctor and bring it/them to your chiro consultation appointment.
Good luck!
