Is it normal for a 7yr old to be so nervous, and have anxiety at this age?

Not necessarily. Some kids are more sensitive than others. Has she always been the anxious/sensitive type or is this something new? Do you have a sense of what's causing the anxiety?

Is she getting along well with everyone at school? How are things going at home? Maybe there's something in particular that is stressing her out and she needs to work it out and get better ways to learn now to manage her stress instead of internalizing it.

How's her health? If she is eating a lot of processed food and consuming a lot of sugar, that will effect her nutritional health and excess sugar can cause an excess of bad bacteria in the intestines -- a condition called candida -- one of the symptoms of which is anxiety. If you are seeing digestion issues as well with her, this may be something you will want to do more research on. The book Gut Solutions is a great resource if information.

my nephew just turned 8 - and he's a nervous little boy. Hes very smart and knows whats going on w/ everything... yet hes the one that keeps everything "in". I think its sad that a child that young should have these feelings already. I guess it would have to do w/ certain circumstances in their lives too :-( If it really bothers you and/or Him - go and have him talk to some one

Try an activity such as karate, music, sports. Maybe he needs to do something that he really enjoys to keep him from worrying about specific things.

I agree that giving him the opportunity for lots of physical movement could help, and as Laurie D suggests, eliminate as much processed food and sugar from his diet as possible. Candida overgrowth in the intestines can have a whole hose of emotional side effects.

Another thing to consider is whether you have chemicals in the home. Most modern cleaning products contain really nasty and unneeded chemicals, and these have proven side effects on many children and adults. Fabric softeners and air "fresheners," in particular, contain a long list of toxic ingredients. I can't be around those toxins without having severe mood swings, nervousness, and ultimately, breathing and sleep problems.

But if you eliminate those potential problems and your son is still nervous, some people are simply wired more delicately than others. Google "anxious child" and "highly sensitive child" and similar key phrases to discover books and other resources to help him cope.

I have a son w/ anxiety. Keeping things light, and funny helps. Okay, life isn't always fun, that's when things get harder. But, humor does help.

I would encourage you to get some help with this. It is sad for a child to go through childhood with an excessive amount of anxiety, and then turn into an adult with anxiety. It is no way to live one's life.
