Hello all-
I am hoping to get advice from families that have tried the Candida diet. My three year old has under gone a significant behavior change in the past three months. We have tried many behavior modification techniques etc. We finally took him to his pediatrican who also practices with a holistic approach. He has had blood tests to look at a nutritional deficiency, but the doctor reccomends the Candida diet for 10 days. Can anyone give me ideas or resources that they have found helpful before we start on the "journey of no food you like". Thanks !!

I did a candida diet and it worked great. I went to Janet Talmadge of LactationInnovation.com to try her awesome products, recommendations and probiotics. Take a look at the web site - it's terrific.

I many ways I agree with Melissa in others I disagree. I agree that we need to make sure it is a yeast problem that is causing your toddlers problems before submitting him to such a diet. Behavioral problems could be just his age or as simple as an allergy to wheat flour. Or maybe just the other kids he plays with.
Number one Candida test is to take a glass of water have your toddler spit in the water, if it just floats on the top and slowly breaks apart Candida is not the problem. If it becomes stringy then there is a large amount of yeast in his system. Check out this web site. http://www.adhdrelief.com/CandidaTest.html
But even after that it does not mean you need to put your son/family on the Candida diet. Just start cutting things out of your diet that may cause problems. First thing is bread and them sugary foods like cookies, candy, or anything with high refined sugar content, including Kool Aide and many juices. Only buy juices with not sugar added. You may wise to get a juicer and start making your own juices. Avoid sugar and foods that contain simple carbohydrates, including corn syrup, white flour, white rice and honey. No mushrooms!!
Add yogurt to your diets. Not the fun yogurts with sugar. Check out this web site. http://www.thecandidadiet.com/foodstoeat.htm
Did this doctor check for dairy allergies? Sometimes a dairy allergy can cause behavioral issues.
I think before you jump in with both feet you need to check with another doctor as well as try cutting out a few foods before doing to much restricting. Some holistic doctors think the only way we will ever be health is taking lots of supplements that they sell you and cutting everything be wheat germ and kelp out of our diets. Just be very sure this is the route you want to go down before you start your journey because it is a life style change, for life not just 10 days. After the 10 days you can not just go back to eatting the foods you cut out or life will be right back as it was before. It is a life style Change. Good Luck.

God Bless,
S.

I love all mamas on Mamasource but I think sometimes we all need to step back and make sure that our expectations of toddlers are realistic. They are growing rapidly and obviously are going to have behavior changes. Their personalities are developing and instead of squashing them we need to mold them. I also had a very challenging toddler (sometimes wanted to rip my hair out!) but he turned into the best child ever. He is now 9 and I couldn't ask for any better of a son. I didn't do any limiting diets, just love, patience and a few sanity breaks with the help of grandma. I am all for holistic ideas but please don't jump to conclusions because your child is difficult at 3. I honestly would be more worried if he wasn't. The terrible 2's were nothing. The hardest time I have had with both of my children was between 3 and 4. They are trying to gain their independence. Give them as much as you can and reinforce their good behavior. Good luck!

You really have to incorporate probiotics into his regimen and there are so few out there that do have chemicals. Miessence and florajen are 2 of the best and the only ones I give my children. More organic fruits and veggies and no processed sugars or boxed foods. Giving him a whole food supplement as well with an omega in it such as nordic naturals or mega foods. only trust products with 3rd party independent testing and certification.

The more raw foods the better. If you can juice fresh for him that is wonderful!! Carrots and apples are some of the best--greens you can add but can be bitter and the apple will even it out.

You'll be glad you did it. It will prevent a lot of problems later with his health. As those buggers die, they leave or create a toxic substance in the blood, so he might be a bit our of sorts. Stick to it if you can, and if he is really hungry, he will eat, if not so hungry, he might be stubborn. A few missed meals won't hurt him and remember, you are being a good caring parent.

The reward will be at the end of the time when he is not longer "challenging", but very happy and content.

It's hard, but you will be thankful you did it. Thank good ness there are stores like whold foods around. and lot's of different choices, when I did it with my son at age 6, none of those store existed. We didn't have a lot of choices.

I am very into natural approaches to things. I think it's great that you are taking this approach with your son.
I suspect that completely following that diet with a 3 1/2 year old is going to be very challenging.
Have you considered trying prebiotics and probiotics to help fight the candida, and then maybe partially following the candida diet but not being quite so strict. The right probiotics can do wonders.
I use probiotics from Shaklee that come in a tiny little pearl that my son has been swallowing since he was a little over a year old. They are triple encapsulated to guarantee the delivery of live microflora to the intestines, instead of the majority of them dying off in the acidic environment of the stomach like so many other probiotics out there.
The probiotic is called optiflora. The new childrens vitamins also have a prebiotic in them.

Actually fruit is a big no no on the candida diet. Fruit turns to sugar which keeps the cycle going. Pears are the best when on the diet. Check with the herbal store in South Elgin. They are awesome and will give you lots of ideas. All of your supplements can be bought there too.

I do not know the Candida diet so I will be looking forward to hearing...but with behavioral changes, make sure that they also consider sleep patterns. Your child may be getting enough hours, but are they getting restful sleep. My three and a half year old had amazing behavioral changes (acting out, temper tantrums and pee accidents...)the doctor said it looked like he needed his Adenoids out. Upon further questioning I told me her, yes, my son was snoring at night, seemed to have signs of sleep apnea...but the diet is worth trying.

Can you email me? I'm off to work and don't have much time but I can send you a lot of information including tons of recipes. We've gone through this for myself and my 3 year old so I'm right there with you. I can tell you 10 days is not going to cut it. Candida die off is probably going to go on for months and then you should never go back to exactly the way you ate before. Email me - ____@____.com
