An Uncomfortable Baby Girl

I have a 3 week old baby girl and she always seems to squirm and grunt like she is trying to go to the bathroom almost everytime I put her down. Especially when she is in her baby chair. She is only happy being held upright on my shoulder or chest. She likes to lie on her stomach, but of course she can't sleep that way when she is not being watched. Everyone keeps telling me she is just spoiled, but the look on her face when she is fussing seems like she is hurting. I don't think she has a problem being put down because she sleeps soundly when she is put down at first, but will always start acting like she is so uncomfortable and start crying after a while. I am thinking about trying Mylicon gas drops because it seems like gas to me, but she is so little and I am so hesitant to try them. The peditrician says it's ok, but I still feel scared about it. Has anyone else used them on a baby this small...or could my little girl just be spoiled already and not want to be put down?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did try the Mylicon and it seems to help a little bit, but it doesn't do much. The baby has gotten better though. I guess she is just growing out of the gassiness. Either that or I am getting used to her now and I realize that not all fussing is gas. I have also learned to pull her off the breast when she seems to not really be eating. That may help since she isn't over eating. I just hope I'm not pulling her away too soon, but the weight checks will tell me for sure. Thanks for all the advice.

I used mylicon drops almost right away wih my baby. B/c he was born with cleft lip and palate, he took in a lot of air so he was a very gassy baby. the Peds don't see anything wrong with using it and you can use them at every feedin. And she could be spoiled. mine went through that until I broke him of it...

Good luck!!

Hi M.,

There is a possibility of a couple things that could be happenening at this time.

1. A GROWTH SPURT. Usually around 3 weeks of age, your child will go thru a growth spurt. Symptoms of a growth spurt inclued
fussier than normal, when not eating or sleeping, usually crying. May want to eat more per feeding or more often. If this is this case. Your child can grow as much as 1 inch over night. If this is the case , then the good news is.... it will only last two to three days. Bad news is .... it will happen again at around 6 weeks old.

Another possibility is REFLUX. If your not familiar w/reflux. This would be considered a bad case of heartburn.
Most infants will throw up alot of what they eat. There is a muscle in the throat called the spinxter muscle. Just like the neck muscles, babies are unable to hold its own head up at birth. As the muscles get stronger you don't need to support the head as much. Well, with the spinxter muscle is not very strong at birth. This muscle helps to keep food down. Since food is all liquids at birth, it makes it easier to throw up.
Not all babies throw up if they have reflux. Some are just really fussy. Sometimes they will want to eat very very often,
(this decreases heartburn by coating the throat)and may seem extremely gassy. Sometimes they even start to refuse food around 3 weeks to 3 months of age. So, I would keep this in the back of your mind. It often gets better on its own or it gets misdiagnosed. So, if the situation does not clear up, ask your pediatrician for thier opinion.

As for the milacon drops, I have used them on both of my children and I have use them myself. They work great, and if your pedi says ok, it couldn't hurt to try.

Good luck! I hope it is just the growth spurt! Write me back if you have any other questions.

H. B.

PS. There is absolutely NO WAY TO SPOIL AN INFANT!!!!!!! They are only try to communicate. But, crying is all they can do.

All of the ideas are wonderful, but I have another tidbit to add =) If you're worried about the Mylicon drops, you can always use Gripe Water. It's a mixture of natural ingrediants, and it has the same affect. It's a little difficult to find, and may be a tad more expensive than Mylicon, but it's worth it if it makes your baby feel better.

Hi there----the gas drops do work, but you may find this a little funny---when mine had gas-or seemed as if they did----I would lay them on there back and gently hold them by the ankles and roll their feet up to their head-----it pushes the bubbles right out of them------------its always worth a try!!!

I used them on my 1st daughter when she was that young & it did help. I tried them with my second daughter & it didn't help. One thing that did work with both of them is to lie them on their back & lift their legs up (pushing thier knees to thier chest. I would hold it for 5 seconds and then bring their legs back down and "shake" their legs out & do it again. I would do that 3x. They would usually pass gas or poop when their legs were up & then I'd see a huge relief on thier face.

Good luck!

Babies are incapable of being spoiled, especialyl at three weeks. Please the next time someone says this to you ask them what the heck they are talking about. You CANNOT SPOIL A BABY. say this to yoursef one hundred times. Spoiling is what happens to milk when you leave it out on the counter. In other words, spoilage comes from neglect. meeting your baby's needs builds trust, andf that is ALL it does, so kudos to you for trusting your instincts in the face of a lot of ignornat feedback.

If you think your child is hurting she most likely is! First of all, Mylicon is totally harmless, but it might not really help. Do try it and see if it seems to help. Also, if your baby spits up a lot (especially through the nose!), consider asking the pedi if they think your baby has gastro-esophageal reflux. the little squirt might be uncomfortable from heartburn. it;s very common and will go away by itself over time but there is no need for her to be in pain from that and they can prescribe a medication for it.

BUt it might not be reflux, your baby might just have gas and belly pain. virtually all infants do... if you think about it, she has never had to USE her GI tract until now, and it takes a while to get used to it.

This behavior will go away over time. it probably IS pain, but also, it's normal and it's not usualy cause for alarm.. you just have to roll with it and do what you can to make her comfy. let her have lots of tummy time, wear her in a sling or baby bjorn as much as you can, cuddle and hold her as much as you can, and be confident you are doing everything right. this kind of fussing and belly trouble usually peaks by 6 weeks and by 3 months you will barely remember it. all is well!

I don't think it's possible to have a spoiled 3 week old. Of course she likes to be held, that's where she feels safest. But if she truly is having gas pains the Mylicon are amazing. We used to call them "magic drops" because they work so fast. You only give them a tiny dose but te results are almost instant (if it is really gas that's bothering her)

Spoiled! Never! As far as the gas situation, it's very safe to use Mylicon drops. My question is, when was the last time she pooped? Sometimes, especially when they're that young, they can get "backed up", not pooping regularly which can cause some abdominal pain and well as gas. I would try the drops and monitor her BMs'. Also, monitor WHEN she looks uncomfortacle. If your feeding her formula, her stomach might not like what your giving her. For instance, my first son was on similac and did just fine. My second son couldn't take similac and I has to change to something more easy on his digestive tract, like Good Start from Carnations. Good luck!

First of all, there is no such thing as spoiling a 3 week old baby. All they know is that you are the center of her world - she wants to be as close to you as possible, to feel your skin, smell your scent. YOU are her sole comfort, and if she is uncomfortable because of gas or constipation, she wants and needs you and only you to make it better. The more you put her down when she is uncomfortable, the more she will cry. Get a baby carrier so that you can strap her to the front of you when you need your arms and hands for other things.

Sounds like your daughter has gas! Mylicon gas drops are 100% safe and effective, and reccommended by pediatricians for infants just days old. My daughter had both horrible gas AND constipation: the gas drops worked WONDERS,a and without all that gas, she was able to poop more easily too. Give her the drops, and see what happens: if they don't seem to work, then its probably something else and you should call your doctor. Most, of not all, babies experience problems with gas in infancy - their digestive tracts are just getting used to processing milk: remember, until she was born, she never had to use her digestive tract at all! Use the dosage instructions of the box of the gas drops, and go from there. Its really a very very common thing that all babies experience at one point or another.

I totally agree with the response below me...you cannot spoil a baby that young! My in-laws would say I was spoiling my son because I was CONSTANTLY breastfeeding and holding him. My nephew who was born around the same time was forced to sort of "be on his own" because they didn't want to spoil him too much by holding him. Now that they are older my son is much more independent and well behaved than my nephew who is always crying and whining. Kinda interesting!

But I do agree that it is probably GAS that your little one is experiencing. Mylicon Drops worked wonders for my kids. It's expensive but you can get the generic kind from WalMart or Target and it's the exact same thing.

I used them with both of my kids from birth but only when I could hear the gass inside put your ear to you babys belly and listen. Give them when needed and if you are formula feeding it might be more gass than breast. my kids were both breast babys.but at 6 months I had to stop nursing my son he liked formula better he then got colic. Gass drops help. For dosing go by weight not age it is easyer hope i helped ya K.

M.,

It sounds like your baby has gas. You might want to look into a few things. You could try gripe water, but it's like $12 for a little bottle. It's supposed to calm your baby and help move gas along, but it never worked for my son. My pediatrician said to try chamomile tea after it has cooled. I have a 6 week old and she was fussy at first and I used this and it seemed to calm her down. I would put a teaspoon of the chamomile tea in a medicine dropper in give it to her. Another thing that really works is baby massage. I did this with both of my kids. If you push your babies legs up to the tummy (bending them) it helps release gas and if they are having trouble pooping it helps move things along. You can also read a book on baby massage or take a class, but it really works. I do this with my 6 week old when she's fussy and it helps her pass it.

Oh and with the Mylicon drops - they never worked for my son. I gave them to him from like 2 weeks old, but didn't do a thing. They work for some kids though. My pediatrian said they're safe too.

Just so you know it does not sound like your baby is spoiled. My son wanted to be held constantly. He was extremely colicky and it was soothing to him to be held. It isn't possible to hold them too much and spoil them at this young age. My six week old on the other hand isn't as big on being held.

Another thing you might want to consider is that what you are feeding your baby might be making your little girl fussy and gassy. I planned on feeding my son formula and breastfeeding also, but the formula made him so sick that he was constantly gassy. I think I tried about 6 or 7 different formulas and finally gave up and just strictly breastfed him. He wasn't as gassy as soon as I did this. You might also want to consider if you are breastfeeding what you are eating. Certain things in your diet can make your baby uncomfortable (broccoli, cabbage, hot sauce, chocolate).

I know it is very overwhelming when you have a little one that is uncomfortable and they won't let you put them down. It is really hard when there are tons of factors that could be making your baby girl uncomfortable. I would just suggest trying a few things suggested and hopefully she will grow out of it. My six week old is getting more and more comfortable every day and allowing me to put her down and let her just sit in her swing.

I wish you luck

Hi,
I didn't know if you are breast feeding or not, but my son had horrible gas pain. I was told to eliminate dairy from my diet & check to see if I was eating too much iron. Turns out they were the culprit of his misery because they were passing thru the breast milk.

I've used the Mylicon drops with a lot of success plus the massage technique where you kind of push the air out of them. Both worked really well. My son also liked the slings and constant movement. No such thing as a spoiled 3 week old!!
