A little girl in my son's class was having issues walking, getting up from naps, going down steps, etc. She was around 2yo. She went to the doctor and needed glasses! Of all the easy fixes.
Call the doctor, maybe schedule an eye exam, too:)
I was up with my son this morning getting ready for work/daycare.. my son had gotten up and was sitting on the couch as I got some things together, he then got off the couch went to take a step and fell down... ?? He is 18 months old and has been walking fine. I picked him up and he took a step kinda sideways then another but it looked like he was going to fall so I held him..
I sat on the floor with him then we tried to get up again, he walked but was stummbling and it really looked as if he was drunk..
I know not the best thing to say about my baby, but that is the only way to describe how he looked.
by then we were running late, so we finished getting ready to bring him to daycare.
When we arrived I put him down to see if he would walk normally, It took him a minute but seemed to be ok after a couple minutes. I explained to the girls at daycare how he was behaving this morning and asked them to call if there was anything else going on with him. I'm sure I sounded completely paranoid but truely it scared me alot!!!! I'm still wonder ing what could have been going on with him, and am nervous if it comes back. Did i do the right thing to leave him at daycare??? and does it sound like I'm totally over-reacting. ?? just looking for some other moms points of view, to ease my mind or inform me of maybe something about this episode that is familiar.
Thanks so much
Thank you soooo much for all the helpful answers and advise.. I also spoke with my husband who thinks I should wait to see if it happens again. I plan on calling his daycare at my break to be sure he is ok..
I guess for now I feel I should just see if it happens again. His daycare is great, I know they would call me if anything was unusual with him..
Of course I would much rather pick him up and see for myself.. however I need to trust my initial instincts that had me drop him off this morning in the first place. I certainly would not have done so if I felt at the time it was more serious. So now I'm trying to take that Breath and relax...I'm sure its nothing and I'm just over thinking it and being wayyy to parinoid.
I will certaily keep posted should anything happen with this episode.
Thank you sincerely for your thoughts :)

My son did this once around the same age and it was terrifying! I'm a hypochondriac, so I immediately assumed he must have some kind of neurological condition.
I called the pediatrician and he was not worried and suggested that I bring him in if it happened again. Most likely, he said, either his leg fell asleep while he was still and it felt strange or he was experiencing some growth pains that didn't "hurt", but felt "wierd". Our doctor said that if he wasn't experiencing general weakness on one side or difficulty with bilateral coordination (using both sides of his body), then he is probably fine.
Hope that helps!
I dont know for sure, but you should call his pediatricians office and speak to either his doctor or a nurse to feel reassured. I would also call the daycare to check in with how he is doing today. I am sorry that does sound scary and I dont think you are overreacting! Maybe he was still half asleep?
God bless,
M.
First take a deep breath.
second, it's likely that he either just got up too quickly and his head was a little off, this happens to me a lot, or he's vertigo , which usually if you have it , it lasts all day long. I get vertigo from sinus problems , it can also be caused by ear infections.
Maybe he got up too fast and was a bit dizzy. Or maybe he was just sleepy a little. Just keep a watch over him and if it does it again in the near future I would take him to the doctor.
have his ears checked....that can throw his equilibrium off.
It could be nothing...could be something (or worse something serious). To be on the safe side I would consult a physician immediately. It could be anything from akwardness from a growth-spurt to signs of an ear infection (as well as many other things) but only a physician will be able to monitor/determine what it may be. Never worry about looking silly- better for it to be nothing than wait for something serious to develop!
.
Probably his foot was asleep or something like that... It was temporary so I'm sure it's nothing.
I've done the same thing - the drunk walk myself. Especially when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I think I have gotten up to fast, ears, something like that. If he didn't seem bothered by it and was able to walk fine at daycare, and they are a good daycare that will watch him and know what happened this morning, I think you are okay and did the right thing. You can even call his doc's nurse and talk to her to ease your worries and see if you need to bring him in after work.
The first thing I think is ears. That can really throw off your equilibrium. Foot asleep. Dizzy. Even low blood sugar.
Had he just waken up? Maybe fallen back asleep on the couch and just woke up and tried to walk? My daughter will do this sometimes after a nap, when she is woken up out of her sleep, but it does only last a few minutes. If your son was still doing this after clearly being awake, I would call the Dr and ask. Our Ped has a triage line to call and the nurses give great advice, and will only have the child come in if necessary. Anything out of the ordinary with our kids is always scary. You sound like a wonderful caring Mom, I'm sure your little one is just fine, maybe he was just extra tired and still sleepy :)
Was he tired? if he is walking fine now that may have been why. If you are concerned it can't hurt to take him to his Ped.
his leg/s could have been asleep. it is really hard to walk when they are asleep.
One morning the exact same thing happened to my daughter she was two years old at the time. She couldn't walk and when she did she appeared drunk she couldn't walk straight. I called my peds MD who asked me to bring her down to the office so she could examine her. We went from the MD's office to the ED in less than an hour on the MD's urging. My daughter was admitted and went four entire days without being able to walk. They performed spinal taps, MRI's, MRI's with contrast, every test known to man and couldn't figure it out. On the fifth day she started walking again although it was wobbly and not straight. By the ninth day she was back to normal with some unsteadyness every time she got out of bed. That lasted for about another three weeks. THe final diagnosis that they gave me was a concussion which to this day I disagree with. My daughter did not hit her head and she certainly did not hit it hard enough to cause her to loose the ability to walk. I would call my doctor immediately and just ask him/her to run some neuro test. Get it checked it out you never know.
