Am I Doing Something Wrong???

My one month old son wets several onesies on a nightly basis. I am changing him every 2 hours at least and am wondering if I am doing something wrong with the diaper, or if I should try another brand, or if this is just how little boys are??? I am using size 1 of the Kirkland brand from Costco and they seem to be working fine, but I will put one on and 15 minutes later urine has leaked through the side (leg) or top....even when it is put on snugly. I am confused.......but a first time mom obviously! Is this just something I should get used to?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all of you for such great advice! I have switched to the Pampers Swaddlers at night and they are working great! I am going to finish out my Kirkland brand, then use Pampers or Huggies from then on out. I also wasn't sure about pointing his "weewee" down...this sounds crazy, but I thought I might hurt it!! The advice has helped us sleep better at night...and for that I can't thank you enough!! :)

I would either try another brand i.e. Huggies, or maybe the size is too big. I never went by the wt suggestions on the package. I just went by how they fit. I have a boy and girl and huggies always worked best for both of them.

I guess I would try a different brand. Costco sells Huggies in bulk also and they work great for us. If that doesn't work maybe he needs to move up a size.

Good luck

Great advice so far! I had this problem with my son also.
I love Huggies Supreme diapers and Huggies Overnites.

I'll put in a plug for the ToysRUs brand (I think it's Essentials for Baby or something like that). Once the "point him south" issue was corrected, I didn't have problems with leakage.

This always happened to my son when he was a newborn too! I used to get so frustrated. I tried different kinds and sizes of diapers and I was still changing clothes and sheets 3 or 4 times a day. I never really did figure out why this was happening but it did stop eventually. I wanted to let you know you're not alone and that it will hopefully stop at some point!

I found that using the more expensive diapers like Huggies or Pampers at night work better for leaks. Then I use the cheaper store brands during the day. I really liked the Pampers swaddlers when they were little, and then the Pampers Cruisers when they got bigger. They are stretchy and fit snuggly at the legs. Also, I have a few tips: make sure his little guy is pointed down and fasten the diaper tighter at night than during the day, not too tight, but snug. You don't want to cut off his circulation. Hope this helps. Good luck and get some sleep when you can ;)

I have a girl so I'm not sure if it will be different for you... We had a problem with leakage at the legs for a while and so we tried all different brands of diapers and a couple of different sizes. The ones I like best (tried huggies, luvs, pampers, and various off brands) are the Target brand, the pampers swaddlers (which are pretty pricey in comparison) and the Walmart (parents choice) brand. The two off brand ones are about $5-6 for I think 44-46 diapers in the size 2 (I'm not sure how many would be in the littler sizes but I would imagine more in a package). I'd say it's kind of a trial & error thing to find the diaper that fits your child best- just like jeans on an adult.

Also, like the lady below me said... they compress the off brands a lot to get them all in a small package. If you kinda squish them around a little to "fluff" them just before you put them on they will take in more liquid and feel softer. Also, I noticed that the pampers feel softer on the outside, but if you feel the inside layer that actually touches the skin, the off brands feel just as soft.

Hi H.~
Two things:
1. My babies leaked more when they were newborn than they did as older babies. No matter what size you use, it's hard to get a diaper on that wiggling little baby! lol

2. You might actually need a smaller size, instead of a bigger size. I have found that the diapers that fit well hold up the best.
I also only use name brand diapers instead of off brand. I like Pampers Swaddlers for newborns. They are a little more expensive, but like the other moms said, what you make up for with work is not worth what you save in price! Off brands are often compressed too much in an attempt to make them as thin as the name brands, but sometimes they don't absorb/expand fast enough and it's like trying to catch pee with cardboard!

Congrats on your little one...Good luck, I hope you find something that works!!

I highly recommend sticking to pampers baby dry or pampers swaddlers. If you have to use the kirkland brand, use only during the day, and nighttime switch to more expensive diapers. A nurse taught me to fold the top edge of the diaper on both ends to create a lip to catch any flow going up (simular to when your had too for the cord). Another helpful tip is to point the wee wee down, diapers are designed to be more absorbant in the lower area. I am a new mom too, so take my advise for what it's worth, only on week 10 of this diaper stuff.:o)

I would say you probably need to try another brand of diaper. If the Kirkland brand work fine during the day and are cheaper I would just buy a different brand to put on him at night.

:^) I have boys. Are you pointing him down? The first few months it's really important to point them down. That happen to me with my first. Hope it's an easy fix. Costco diapers work well for me, I was told from a guy at costco that they are made by huggies just sold under Kirkland name, so they are good diapers.

I've not heard great reviews on the Kirkland brand diapers. One thing you should do for sure though is make sure little boy parts are pointed down into the diaper so he will not wee straight out the top. We actually have been using the Member's Mark Diapers from Sam's Club and they're pretty decent and quite a bit less than Huggies or Pampers. The best of luck to you!

Hi H.,

We were a family of All! girls, so it took us a little while to make sure we pointed everything down. That was the major source of our wetting issues at that age. Also, try using the Huggies in the next size down for at least one pack. My grandson is 3 months old now and has only been wearing size 1 for about a month or so.

Good Luck and please please sleep whenever you can. I know there's a ton of work to be done. It will wait. Rest.

My daughter was having the same proplems at night when she was younger. I asked her Dr about it and was advised when I put her down for the night, to put her in a size larger diaper. They fit sine since they aren't moving around as much as during the day and tyhey hold more as far as absorbancey. We wake up dry every day now - there have been a few exceptions now and then. We are now in the potty training phase, but this trick worked like a charm!!
A girlfriend of mine also does it with her little boy and it worked for him too. Worth a try since you'll be moving into the next size anyway -- they won't go to waste!

definately try a different brand and maybe try going down a size. If the diaper is too big you can have leaks. I really liked the huggies in the beginning, but now I like the Pampers better. I would suggest getting the smallest pack of diapers you can for multiple brands to see which one works the best for you. I swear not all diapers are created equal!

Hi! I had this problem with one of my daughters..she was a "strong urinator" also. A friend told me about diaper liners so I tried them! I found them at Rite Aid, in the diaper aisle. They are basically very similiar to menstrual pads, but a bit longer. They fit in the diaper and just give that extra absorbtion. I used them strictly in the nighttime diaper, and it really worked.
Good luck!

There's a lot of good advice here already, but thought I'd add my two cents -- my daughter had a very tiny butt when she was that age and her diapers leaked a lot too! I learned to pull out the little leg elastic things inside the diaper before I put it on, make sure they're pulled up away from the diaper, I don't know why they come stuck down. That helped a lot, as did pulling the diaper tighter! I was using Huggies for her at the time, but have switched to Pampers which I do think are better. Sounds like you've got a super soaker there! I think the maxi pad idea is a good one, too. A piece of absorbent cloth would work just as well, too.

your request made me smile :) the only advice I have is that when I put my son's diapers on...if I don't make sure that the ruffles are out around his legs then it makes a little tunnel from which all leaks occur hehe I have to put my son in brand name diapers at night because the off brands don't cut it...I found that Huggies Nighttime diapers work really great but Pampers worked well also...and sometimes there are leaks no matter what I use! hopefully that was helpful, if only to let you know you're not alone in the battle of the leak hehe

I had the same problem with my daughter also around that age. She would wet through her clothes, sheets and crib sheet. The only diaper that worked with her was Huggies. I am still using that brand of diaper and never have that problem anymore and she is already 9 months old. I tried several other brands and she always wet them. So huggies for her was the answer!! Hopefully they will be the answer to your prayers also! haha Good luck!

H. you are not doing anything wrong. Your son just might not be able to wear those diapers. I had a problem with my son with Huggies. Every time he would pee the crystals in the diaper that hold the pee would pop out. I have used Pamper Cruisers on both of my kids. I have never had a problem. With me working in a day care I see more Pampers on the kids then anything. I would give the cruisers a try! Good Luck! (oh and on boys the strechy sides are better)

I had trouble with my son when he was tiny too. I switched diapers and found that Pampers Swaddlers worked best when he was small (Get all the coupons you can!). As he outgrew the Swaddlers, I found that Huggies (reg. white box not the supremes) worked the best. Also, make sure things are pointing south :)Otherwise if it's aiming to the side or up then there is more chance of a leak. My son is almost 2 and I still have to remember that :) Good luck to you and your sweet baby boy.

Hi there - I also am the new mom of a one month old boy and also sometimes experience him wetting through his onesies right after I change him. I'm not sure about that diaper brand... haven't tried that one. But, Pampers Swaddlers work best for us. (Huggies seem to leak more.)

Friends of mine have told me to make sure his "business" is not pointing down or to the sides when the diaper is sealed. According to them, that will make sure to catch the stream and prevent leaks. I've been trying to make sure to do that and have had much fewer problems. Good luck!

when this started happening to my son it was for one or two reasons either I wasn't putting the diaper on tight enough or he was ready for the next size up. Usually it was that he was ready for the next size up in daipers. i would make the diaper tighter first and see if that works if it doesn't I would move up in diaper size. good luck hope it works for you.

Try Pampers Swaddlers. They are more expensive, but less problematic. I believe the Kirkland diapers are basically Huggies, mfg by Kimberly Clark. Huggies work for some folks, but I had only problems, especially around the leg holes, with them. I read a lot of reviews of diapers on Amazon and there are a lot of people who agree w/ me. Diapers seem to be dependent on individual fit. You don't mention your son's weight, but if you are bumping up against the weight limit, you might have problems as well. I found it worked best to transition to next size when my son was 3/4 of the way through the weight range, i.e. if the size range is 8 - 14 lbs, don't buy the mega pack at BRU when he's 13 lbs! : )

I also use the Kirkland brand. I absolutely love them!! I have noticed that when my daughter wiggles while diapering the elastic can end up in with strange placement and then the diaper leaks. I used papmers in the begining and they were absolutely horrible everytime my daughter pooped it came right out the leg. I also liked the Huggies brand, but my husband did not, and at Costco it is actually cheaper to buy Huggies than Kirkland Brand.

Great advice so far! I had the same issue with my son and sometimes still do....he is 7 months now. I found Huggies snug and dry or baby-fit shape to work very well. I also found every baby is different, so you just have to experiement until you find ones that work for your little guy. I heard good things about Luvs and Pampers, but had no luck with them!

Also, make sure that the bassinet or crib mattress is not titlted at all where his head might even be a little bit lower than his bottm. Sounds silly, but our bassinet seemed to arch up a bit in the center...recipe for disaster with a leaky baby!

Another trick I have been doing with a lot of success (though not fail proof) is the double diaper. SOunds crazy, I know, but I put his regular size diaper on first and then the next size diaper over that. I found that using the next size up alone, for him, made the leaking worse. He has little skinny legs and the elastic on the sides wasn't tight enough!

You certainly are not alone and being a first time Mom myself, I felt EXACTLY like you did! Just for humor, for a few nights I thought he was sweating b/c the wetness on - had no idea it could travel in such a fashion! Good luck.
