Is it possible to have a dairy allergy in a child, that shows up hours after consumption? I always thought that if a child is allergic to dairy or other foods, it will show up immediately with a reaction, whether it's a cough, rash, eczema, etc.

What can I do next?

I think it is possible. I had a really bad reaction one morning and we think it was to the shrimp I had the day before. My son has been breathing bad at night. I think he breaths worse on the nights he has ice cream. He has cereal every morning and I never noticed any kind of allergy, but I think because of the night breathing, I think he is. It must be very mild. Things can harbor in the body and come out in different ways. You just have to do testing (like avoiding it for a while and then seeing it what you noticed happens again the next time it is eaten).

Allergies or intolerances to foods can show up anywhere between immediately and 4 days after consuming it. This is the info I got from my allergist when we were trying to figure out my food sensitivities. They were hard to detect because the reaction showed up so much later, but a RAST test confirmed them.

Yes it is!

My daughter's allergies to soy and egg show up immediately, with wheat/gluten it shows up in behavior, and with dairy it shows up about three days later in congestion, every time. All of them result in either a cough, hives, eczema, and of course, behavior.

You need to be careful of hidden sources too. I refer everyone to www.tacanow.org, a support system for families of Autism, as they have SO much information on just this, food allergies and what to do to replace the food, shop, hidden sources, recipes, etc.

Eczema in my daughter takes a day to a few days to show up.....so yes, it can take hours or days depending on the kind of reaction the kid gets. If it is anaphylactic or hives, they generally show up quicker than eczema or generalized rash.

Allergies show up all sorts of ways. I have some food allergies, and when I push them too hard (I can tolerate small, infrequent amounts), I get a cough or even a wheeze up to 6 hours later.

Reactions can also change in symptoms, timing and severity over time, or sometimes from one exposure to the next. Sometimes they are suddenly worse, and sometimes they gradually fade away.

Keeping a food diary for a few weeks may help you pin down the allergen if you don't already know.

YES, YES, YES! Some people might call it a "food sensitivity" but then that makes it sound so benign, doesn't it? One of my food "sensitivities" (from saccharin) sent me to the ER needing shots of adrenaline and benadryl and was worse overall in outcome than my "allergy" with anaphylaxis (yes, that could've killed me but fortunately I was already in the hospital when that happened). I recovered faster from the anaphylaxis than the "sensitivity" one which caused first hives then "allergic arthritis" (You know how many joints we have!!??!!).

Here is a great site about food sensitivities (mostly gluten and dairy) with easy recipes http://www.foodsensitivityjournal.com/

Yes, it is possible. Allergies can also worsen with each subsequent exposure, so I would suggest talking to a doctor and getting some allergy tests done before feeding your child dairy again. Good luck!

My son is very allergic to dairy, so if yours turns out to be, feel free to send me a private message if you have questions.

Allergies can show up over a short length of time, I believe, but you also might be seeing a food intolerance - a completely different response to an allergy, but also means that the food needs to be avoided. My son is cow's milk protein intolerant, which shows through stomach cramps and diarrhea a few hours after he eats dairy products.

It took me most of my life to figure out that milk and I are not friends..
Once when I gave up all milk products I found I was happier.
Some people just don't do well on milk. It is hard to get an MD to
totally confirm this, but see a doctor and then try a milk free month.
