It's not an allergy. It's just the acidity in the sauce. My little ones used to do it with ketchup, too.
This is weird...My daughter who is 20 months old had McDonald's Sweet 'N Sour Sauce for the first time today with chicken nuggets. She loved it! But she now has bright red marks where the sauce was around her mouth. Any ideas on what would be a common allergy in the Sweet 'N Sour sauce? The only thing we have ever noticed as far as an allergy or situation with sensitive skin was a few dogs that had licked her face and got the same effect.
An overreaction by the mommy of one precious girl. She went down for a nap shortly after and it was gone when she awoke. Think it is just sensitive skin. Thank you ladies!

My 14 month old had McDonalds sweet and sour a few weeks ago and got red spots on the areas where the sauce wasn't on her face and body. Thinking could possibly be allergic reaction or was because I cleaned her up and red marks. However, this evening she had sweet and sour from KFC and again, bright red marks on her belly and face where the sauce was. I don't believe it's due to acid because she loves ketchup and tomato sauce and eats it several times a week and no issue. Going to ask her pediatrician at next physical.
It may not be an allergy but just local irritation as her skin is so sensitive and the sauce is pretty acidic. Did she have tomato soup or ketchup before? Those are acidic too and might cause a similar reaction if they contact the skin too long.
Might be the MSG. It is a chemical additive lurking in almost all processed foods. They don't need to list it on the ingredients as it's in almost all spices and can be called "natural flavors" among other things. If you check out th eingredients of almost any processed, prepared or convenience food you'll find one of the many names they use. Lots of peopl are very sensitive to it causing headaches and other issues.
Is it itchy? Are you sure it's not just stain from the sauce?
My kids did that plus they had food allergies. The food allergy symptoms were more like hives or a rash. If there were no symptoms with this, I didn't count it as a reaction.
Was this her 1st time with the nuggets also? If so, what oil are they fried in? People with peanut allergies can't even use peanut oil. Just a thought. Also, look into McDonals's website for the ingredients-if you haven't already. Good luck in your search.
It is probably an allergic reaction, she may even outgrow it, 2 of mine would get red spots on their face anywhere ranch dressing or cinnamon would touch them when they were very young, even ketchup could be irritating if they got it on their faces. Could just be sensitive skin, if she didn't get blotches anywhere else except where ther was contact I wouldn't worry too much.
I have a packet of the sauce right here (I know weird thing to have on hand). The only things I see that might trigger a reaction and that she may or may not have tried before are these:
Apricot Puree
Peach Puree
Soy Sauce
Chili Peppers
Of course there are other ingredients like corn syrup, salt, garlic powder and others but I assumed she probably has had these before.
Good luck,
K.
Could there be a dye in the sauce that she might be allergic to?
Same exact thing happened to my son when he was around that age as well. He still cannot have that sauce and he is 6 years of age now. There obviously is some kind of ingredient in it that does not agree with them. Could be the soy or vinegar since my son is getting itchy skin right now after having wishbone's sweet n spicy french dressing which has some similar ingredients. I'd say keep your little one from any sweet n sour sauce in the future. Good luck! ;)

That happens to my son if anything acidic stays on his face for too long. For example, when we have pasta with tomato sauce, I have to be sure to clean him up fast or his mouth will be all red for a few hours.
