Allergic to Hair Dye

I was hoping someone might have some suggestions. I color my hair at home and am well over 50% grey. I'm only 43 but started going grey at 24 (thanks for the genes mom - LOL!). I've been experiencing allergic reactions to the hair dye - my scalp and neck get incredibly itchy, even my eyeballs and tongue get itchy. I have very sensitive skin in general but it seems to be getting worse. I use ammonia free hair dye but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any suggestions? thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your suggestions and advice. I went to Henry's and got a product called Naturtint. I had much less of a reaction but there was still some reaction. I hope it will lessen over time. I really don't want to go gray! I am seeing my hairdresser this weekend and I will see what other suggestions she has. I haven't had the chance to go the beauty supply store yet, but that's also a good suggestion. Thanks again for your advice!

I have the same problem, and have found only one hair dresser in Santa Rosa, California who carries a hair dye that suits me. It is very difficult to get in the US, as it is from the UK, but you can try. It is a "botanical" hair dye by Schwarzkopf. This is the only thing that has worked and it looks great on my hair! Let me know, if you find anyone in the San Diego area who carries it... ____@____.com.

I really am no help here, but I'm going to answer anyway. I do not dye my hair (I am horrible on up-keep, so when I go grey, I am just going to go grey . . . ). I do have other allergies (to a couple types of make-up, including eye-shadow), though, and like you, looked until I could find a replacement, because I wasn't ready to go without. All I can say for this issue is to suggest that you go to your beautician or the local beauty supply or beauty school and ask what they recommend that is hypo-allergenic. Beyond that, it may simply be time to go (gracefully) grey . . . Look at Heloise, her hair is beautiful!

Good luck!

Hi C.,

Have you tried Light Mountain Natural hair color. It is ammonia & peroxide free. You can get it at most health food store. I have been using it for 6mo and I love it. My hair is shiny and fuller. People have said that my hair looks healthy. I too have grey hair about 30% all over and it covers the grey. I have a friend that comes over and does it for me.

Aloha, C.!

Have you tried looking at the health food store. I know they carry other personal care items (tampons, toothpaste, etc.). I don't know, but maybe they carry hair dye made with organic ingredients? It may be worth a try.
Good luck ~

Hi C.-
I would suggest going to an all natural salon and maybe asking which products they use. I know of one where Ilive, and she uses all natural hair color. Do you have any in your area? Which company do you work for? I work from home as well, and have an Arbonne business. Have you heard of it?

My mother-in-law has the same problem. fortunately she has 8 girls to help her dye her hair, They have to put her hair through a shower cap, cover her neci comletely and only put dye on the top part of the cap. She also has thin hair so it is a bit easier for her to do this.

Are you sticking to one brand of hair dye, or have you tried others? Try other brands is my suggestion, or go to a salon and ask their opinion, they have the knowledge of what products are out there that can be used in cases like yours.

A little more information may be needed to help you. You may only be allergic to a certain brand. Henna and organics may be the way for you. Have you consulted with a color specialist..not just a hair dresser?

Surely there is a product or two out there that is totally natural. I'd try one of those and if your eyeballs are still itchy, give up and embrace your grey!

I am a brunette, I have about 20% of grey hair and I apply Henna (strawberry blonde color), which make my gray hairs look like very natural redish highlights. It is a natural product that comes in different colors, and it is actually good for your hair.
