Alcohol and Withdrawls

My husband recently decided that he likes to drink bourbon (gross imo) and he received a couple of bourbons as a gift for his birthday back in August. He usually is a moderate drinker, drinking 2 beers/drinks about 3 days a week. The last two weeks we have had birthday after birthday and various other "nights out" etc and he has drank pretty much every single night (maybe one night off). Still the same 2 drinks, sometimes 3 but usually 2. He has mostly been drinking his birthday bourbon and measures it out to be the correct amount to be a "single drink" each time. He is the kind of person who could drink every day or not at all and it doesn't really effect him from a mental standpoint. However, we are starting a diet together tomorrow that includes no alcohol/ no sugar and I am just wondering if he is going to go through physical alcohol withdrawl since he has been drinking on such a regular basis for 2 weeks?? I am not sure how long it takes the body to get addicted to alcohol?

What can I do next?

There's no way he's been drinking enough to get the DT's in 2 weeks.
He's just been giving his liver a workout for a few weeks.
He'll be fine, and cutting out the alcohol really helps cut those empty calories.

Nope. Two or three drinks a day is not enough to have physical withdrawal symptoms. Good luck on your diet!

Based on your description and assumning he doesn't *need* the alcohol to *relax* - there are plenty of people who rely on alcohol inappropriately, and don't drink every day - he will be in withdrawl from sugar and carbs, not the alcohol per se.

I started a low carb diet today. Good luck to you!!

Well before I quit drinking I drank an entire bottle of wine every single night for years and did not have physical withdrawals when I quit. Pretty sure he will be fine. it's been a year and 1/2 and I still crave carbs though.

No alcohol withdrawl, but he will have some pretty strong carb cravings the first few nights.

No-he'll be fine-it generally takes an adult years of heavy, daily drinking to develop the type of addiction that would require the need for detox.

I'm pretty sure he won't have physical withdrawals.

Good luck on the diet. You're not only losing weight together, but you are keeping your hubby from becoming a functioning alcoholic because if he continued to drink daily, he would be an alcoholic even if he did manage to go to work and keep up appearances. That's where the "functioning"part of "functioning alcoholic" comes in.

JM:

Alcohol addiction takes a tad bit more than 2 weeks. If he was drinking a bottle a day, then I would say you've got problems...

Other than that? I think he may have cravings for it...but drinking plenty of water will help...alcohol turns into sugar...so he may have cravings for carbs..

How long does it take to get alcohol out of the system? 48 hours since he's been drinking regularly...
