Afraid of Toilets!

My 6 year old daughter is very afraid of automatic flushing toilets. When I was potty training her, she was even afraid of the regular ones. When we go out, most places have the automatic, and I have to fight her to go potty. She freaks out VERY bad, (it lamost makes me cry!) Even if I cover the sensor up with my hand or a paper towel, she still freaks out! I don't want her to 'hold' it because it isn't good for bladders! I have to hold her hand to make sure she isn't going to be 'Flushed Away'. She is even afraid of the drains in bathtubs/sinks! When she is done with a bath, she has to be out before I can drain it (this isn't so hard to deal with!). Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

this is a very common problem. Just keep a note pad or something to cover up the sensor on the back of the toilet then after she get down. an is out of the bathroom you can remove it and flush. It is scary to be so small and the seat so big. it wil get better

I can relate. My 5 year old daughter asks every time if this toilet flushes by itself before she uses it. I don't have any great advice as she is often too tense even if I get her to sit on it to go, so she often just holds it until she is home. The problem of course happened when one flushed while she was sitting on it and it totally freaked her out. Sometimes I can get her to go by asking her to "hurry" before it goes off, but after reading these responses, I may try covering the sensor instead. Since you already try that, I'm not sure what else you can try. Sorry I'm not more helpful, but know that you are not alone. It does pay to know where the non-automatic toilets are though. :)

We play cover the eye/buttons and my daughter tries to race and finish before it goes off. Something I haven't tried but am going to start ( i'tired of leaning over her as she goes) colored post-it notes in the purse and pen let her draw a happy face to cover the scary sensor, I just think it may be simple enough for my 5 1/2 year old to go in an auto flush potty herself.

im not quite sure if this will work since your daughter is older than mine but my daughter is terrified of any toilet except ours. when we go on trips i literally have to stop on the side of the road and let her pee. she is only 3 years old, but still sometimes i cant hide her and people look at me like im crazy. we finally came to an agreement i now have to hold her over the potty to get her to use it yes i know that is totally insane but i didnt know what else to do. she will put her legs over my arm and i just hold her in kind of a squatting position. i think its better than having to pee on the side of the road all the time

All of my (3) children are afraid of toilets - they are 5,4 & 2 ---- especially the automatic ones. I struggle with it. What I have found works best is to say (in a happy sing-songy voice) "oh come on - there is noting to be afraid of" all the while making sure that I try to stop the auto flush. If it happens - I agree with them - "yes, that IS scary and loud"... For some reason, with my kids just having their concerns validated seems to help. It doesn't make the fear go away - but easier to deal with. So, every trip to the restroom has to start with me being at my highest "great mom" state - full of fun and energy.

I know - sounds like a pain and may not work for yours - but,I promise, it works for mine.

Not the same situation, but I have a 4yo who appears to be afraid of any toilet. She will not use them on her own. Since I've started giving her the Bach Flower Remedy Mimulus (http://www.smartbomb.com/741273206019.html), she's 80% better.

I would use either Mimulus or Bach's Rescue Remedy in your case. A lot of moms use the second one (it's a combination of several single remedies) for the meltdowns kids have. It's wonderful at calming them. They're available at health food stores. HTH.

I have 3 children and all of them were too afraid of toilets flushing. Its because they feel as though the noise(action) is not controlled by them or predictable by them. All of my children are now not scared because I showed them that they are in control of the toilet. I got them used to it by counting down.... 1,2,3, flush! But tell the child what your about to do. Its sensory related.
