AFFORDABLE Day Care and Full-day Preschool, Does It Exist?

Hello -
Daycare/Preschool for my 1.5 yr. old and my fully-potty-trained 3 year old is bankrupting us.

The only alternatives I've found are similar in price, or they are for a few hours a couple of days a week. My husband and I work full time.

We pay more than our mortgage per month for our childcare - it's like college tuition!
Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I have been looking for the same thing and so far have not come up with anything.
My son is 4 and will be going to Kindergarden next year. At the moment we are looking for a full day care just on Fridays and that is hard to find (and expensive)
My son is in a cooperative preschool which is less expensive because the parents are also doing some of the work. This does have the draw back of only being part of the day.
If I do find something I can let you know. For the summer we are looking for 2-3 full days of care because the preschool will be on summer break.

Hi H.,

I cannot offer you a referral unfortunately, only sympathy. I am in the same boat. I've been looking for full time employment, but have found wages are lower then they were a couple of years ago, with daycare costs higher. I was offered a job as a medical claims rep for an insurance company, but after figuring the daycare in for two kids (one only part time), I'd only bring home about $100.00 per month (Kindercare). Not worth it. If you hear of a reasonable daycare center I'd love the hear about it. A couple of years ago I worked part time evenings at a bank and brought home more money than I would have full time days. Just a thought...

Good luck!

I'm not sure what you're paying? My daycare is full time and is quality safe and very caring. There are two places one for pre school that my son attends and the other is for younger kids which my daughter attends. it's in portland off Tewilliger called cloud nine, ###-###-####. feel free to call me if you want more info at ###-###-####.

Depending on the hours a day I would gladly help taking care of your older child. I've been looking for a job. I have a 2 month old baby and my husband works from home.
If you are interested drop me a line and I can tell you more about us.

We take our 16 month old son to Alder Street Learning Center in downtown Portland. He loves it. They offer daycare and preschool for your 3 year old. I don't know the charges for the preschool but FT daycare for our son is $875. I believe they offer a discount for more than one child...We have been very happy with them. The teachers are great and our son, like I said, loves it.
