Advice on Moving to the Area

Hi - looking to get a sense of the school system in and around Annapolis. My family will be moving to the Annapolis area this summer. We plan to rent the first year until we become more familiar with the area and can better decide where we would like to buy and what we can afford. However, my five-year-old son will be in kindergarten. So we want to rent in an area with good schools for him but also affordable housing so that when we buy we don't have to switch schools. Any advice on good schools, both public and private, w/b much appreciated. Currently my son is at a Montessori, but we are leaning towards public schools, if we can find a good one. And advice on affordable neighborhoods (I realize this is subjective!) is also appreciated.
Thanks,
K.

K.,
I am from this area (product of the public school system in Anne Arundel County) and now teach in the system. So, take this as a bit biased, however, I would not recommend living in "Annapolis" due to some of the schools there... I would direct you in south of Annapolis - to Edgewater, Mayo, Harwood, Lothian (getting into more country setting), etc. Severna Park, Arnold, Davidsonville are wonderful areas, just a bit on the pricey side.

Let me know if you need more help. Good Luck!

Edgewater, Mayo and Davidsonville, all are wonderful. Close to everything yet simple and a little more on the laid back side. Most is waterfront or close to the water. The schools are wonderful! 3 BR with 1 1/2 ba run around $1900 to rent. Hope that gives you some idea.

I have kids in the more pricey area that she is talking about and love the schools here they do so much with the kids. Teachers really do take pride in the kids here and work very hard to make sure they are getting all they need. They are always willing to help you out if you need someting. They make it easy for the kids to love them.

hey just wanted to touch base and let you know that if you are leaning towards public schools stay out of the annapolis area the school system is having alot of problems. if you dont mind private school st. mary's is a private school located downtown annapolis that goes from k-12 grade. severna park and arnold are nice areas the public school system is better there.going down south like someone posted into lothian and southern anne arundel county can be quite exspensive if you want any yard for your kids. good luck with your move.
