Has anyone bought any of the new toploading/high efficiency washers? My current washer (a top loader/HE) has stopped working. My repair man recomends the newest Whirlpool Cabrio. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi, just wanted to thank all who responded to my question about washers. We purchased a top loader, Kenmore which is made by Whirlpool. I've been very happy so far. Thanks again for all your help.

I have the Cabrio washer. I love the washer for its size, but have had trouble with it. I have had to replace the pump twice and it is two years old. They tell me the loose change gets through the bottom of the washer and gets into the pump. I also have a friend who has the same washer and is having trouble with it. Thankfully I got the extended warrenty.

I have 6 kids. Some are grown so I have 7 grandkids to wash for too. We purchased a new washer/dryer set 2 years ago. We went with the GE Harmony. It is a top loading HE washer. It is huge! We have had no problems with it at all. I love it! We got the best price at Sears and of course got the warranty just in case.LOL

Hi, I got a front loader and with a big family we love it. We have the LG Trom. When researching for washers, we found that this one had the least complaints. So far it we have had no problems. My cousin has one and she said that it is the only appliance in her house that she would buy the exact one and hers is three years old. She also has a big family with five kids. We both find that we have less stains left on our clothes and that we have to pretreat the clothes less. They come out so clean! And it has cut my laundry day in half. When we looked at the top loading washers, my husband said they just didn't seem a well made. I seems when it comes to appliances sturdiness means a lot to men! He also researched online for a week and we went to many stores. We knew ours was breaking so we had time to look. My recommendation is to ditch the top loader and go for a front loader. WE do not have any mildew around our door like some people get. We also have a regular dryer and it handles the double loads nicely because the clothes come out less wet. Good Luck!

A year ago we bought a HE toploader (I believe it was the Cabrio) We had been told that it was the largest capacity you could get and that since it didn't have an agitator (it has an "impeller") the clothes wouldn't get as twisted. Well they were right. I watched through the glass top as the top clothes stayed on the top and the clothes on the bottom stayed on the bottom. The drum seemed to rock back and forth but the clothes didn't go anywhere. In fact some didn't even get wet. We tried different size loads, dumping the clothes, placing them neatly, etc, nothing changed. The store where we purchased it suggested that we have the repairman look at it to see if it was defective. He determined that it was "working" properly, but based on the design he didn't see how it could get clothes clean. We tried to contact whirlpool and got no response. We called the store and they graciously took it back and we now have a HE FRONT loader and we love it. Even the salesman told us that he has people who love the machine and others that hate it and he agreed that he didn't see how it could get the clothes clean. This is the only time that we've bought an appliance and absolutely hated it. I would definitely try to look at some other reviews of this machine before you buy it. Good luck.

We found that when we needed almost all new appliances when we built our new house, Sears was the best place to get them. For what you would spend on a low-med. end appliances, you can get top of the line appliances at Sears. They have their Kenmore brand, which I believe is Whirlpool.
I didn't have to replace my washer, but when I do, I know that I will be getting one of those front load washers that use a lot less water and clean the clothes better. Sears has those too. Be sure to check them out. We went to all the places that had appliances, and ended up there. Even our builder gave us his discount at ABC and even with his builders discount, we couldn't do as well as at Sears. Good Luck!

We have the Kenmore Calypso and love it! We have had 2 (one was ruined in a house fire) and the older model never had any issues. Our newer one has had service on it (just because we washed a rug and parts of it came apart and got stuck, we now do not wash rugs in there).

All in all WE LOVE IT! I sell Shaklee products and use the laundry detergent, fabric softener and our nature bright stain remover (instead of bleach) and our clothes come out perfectly clean! Even spit up, food, grass stains.

I would say the only problem is if you wash blankets sometimes if it gets too heavy it throws the machine off balance, but that's normal with the other type of washers too!

We have all Kenmore appliances here, I would recommend them to anyone!

Hi W.. I had to replace my washer about 18 months ago and did a lot of research. The top loading HE washers were either hated or loved no matter the manufacturer. I needed a top loader that was water effecient since I have a septic system. I found what I was looking for in a washer made in Ohio by Staber Industries. I did extensive research on them before I took the plunge, mainly because I had never heard of them. I can't say enough wonderful things about this washer. My husbands greasy/dirty project clothes have never been so clean. My husband is a mechanical engineer and was impressed with the machines simplicity and ease of repair. There is no transmission, it's belt driven and is easily changed by the homeowner from the front access panel. I have talked to several people who bought one when the company came out with them 15 years ago and they haven't had a lick of trouble. So many of the newer applicances have very expensive unique replacement parts. Go to www.staber.com and check one out, be sure to watch the video of one working. I would be happy to answer any questions you have. Happy hunting.

W.,
We just bought that model about a year ago and it is great. There is no spinner in the middle for your clothes to get stuck on. It holds more clothes than a normal washer. You just need to buy the HE detergent which in some brands is more expensive, but you can always find sales. Hope this helps.

Dear W. B.,

I recently read a story about a lady who was having ringing in her ears that would not go away. The doctor was asking if she had gotten a new top-loading washing machine within the past 6 months. The lady said "yes, as a matter of fact, she had." The mold built up under the tub where no person could see it without taking the washing machine apart and it causes a sickness from allergies or something that turns into something serious. The woman got rid of the washer and the ringing went away.

Just wanted you to know that I had read that. Might make you change your mind about purchasing a top loader.

Also, washers with no agitator don't seem to clean clothes, etc. as well because they are just falling against each other.
