Advice for Chapped Skin Due to Drooling

My daughter just turned 6 months old and is teething. She is drooling quite a bit, but not excessively. As a result, the area around her mouth is red and blotchy. I have been putting vaseline on the area to act as a barrier to the moisture which has helped some but I was wondering if anyone else has had success with any other products. As well her armpits are red and inflammed. I am sure it is due to moisture and skin to skin contact. I have put powder underneath her arms and also vaseline. Sometimes it looks better but it continues to persist. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank You.

Have you started solids? My little guy reacted this way, with the blotches around the mouth, under his arms, and under his knees. It was an eczema type reaction tho solid foods. He just wasn't ready for them.

Try AQUAPHOR. You can find it at any drugstore or Walmart/Target/Kmart. It's a little pricey compared to Vaseline but it doesn't take much and it works great.

Aquaphor works really good. You can find it at Wal-mart, Target, Kmart etc. It comes in either a small tube or also a big jar. I use it alot for the chapped cheeks in the winter and my son has serve exeme so we use it on his whole body.

I would make sure that it is not a fungal infection-especially because it is under her arms too. If it is the lotromin will help.

I remember going through this when my son was little. I would stop using vaseline, especially under her arms. Have you ever tried lanolin? A lot of nursing moms use it for nipple discomfort. It's tasteless and odorless and perfectly safe. It works like vaseline in that it creates a moisture barrier. It's great for diaper rash too. A popular brand is Lansinoh. You might be able to find it in with the diaper rash ointments or definitely at a natural foods store. it's very thick and may seem hared to spread at first. Warm it up a little by rubbing it between your fingers to make it easier to spread on her chin. As for her armpits, i would use a very mild fragrance free soap. My doctor recommended Cetaphil liquid soap for my son when his armpits were bright red. Then use a fragrance and dye-free lotion. I had to switch to fragrance and dye-free detergent as well, with my second child. Try to let those little pits breathe as much as possible. Make a game of lifting her arms up and blowing on them, she'll probably get a kick out of it.

Hydrocortisone cream. My 3yo's doctor told us this when he was a baby. It works wonders, will not hurt them (even if it gets in there mouth and can be put on several times a day (you just need a thin layer). We usually put it on 3-4 times per day, especially before bedtime/naptime. My daughter's isn't as bad since we started it early. We tried aquaphor and vaseline with my son, but it made it worse. It should help under the arms too. It's probably from sweating, so this should help too.
Hope it helps!!

Hi K.!

My pediatrician gave me a sample of Aquaphor to use when my son's mouth was chapped from drooling and it worked great. I would put it on him just after he fell asleep for naps and at night and it cleared up pretty quickly. As far as the red areas under her arms, are they red all over or splotchy red areas? If powder isn't working, you might want to see your pediatrician and make sure it isn't fungal or yeast. Hope this helps!

Hi, K.! I found this wonderful website called Natures Inventory....they have over 100 all-natural wellness oils and can be used on ANYONE, including babies! They have a "skin soothe" oil that 2 of my friends have used for their babies...1 of them has excema (she's 7 months old) and the other has a rash on his face that just won't go away. Both of them have used this oil and it has been completely successful for both! You can click on this link to check it out if you'd like... http://www.naturesinventory.com/?Click=32142....my family, friends and I all use different oils and I haven't used one that hasn't worked! It's on sale now for $13.46 per bottle...which will last you a LONG time...as you only need a couple of drops. Good luck to you and your baby!

I would go with Lanolin, its safe if she gets it in her mouth and it worked great when my little one had chapped and cracked toes after she was born.

well, i would be careful--very careful--about putting anything right around her mouth. but aquaphor is a great product, not a prescription, you can buy it at toys r us. only takes a dab. as for the armpits, i'd ask for nystatin ointment bc it is probably yeast. good luck!

I never liked the idea of putting Vaseline or other ointments on my baby's face, especially near his mouth, so I always used nipple cream (lanolin, I believe). I figured it was safe when my baby was nursing, so it was probably safe to be on his face. It worked great!

I don't really know what to do around the face, but maybe putting powder under the arms would help the moisture there.

Hey K.! You need to try Renew lotion...here is a testimony I have: Also I wanted to share with you just how good Renew lotion is. Like my older son did, my newborn has eczema on his face and a little in his eyebrows. I was hesitant to put the Renew on his face but I did at six weeks and once I figured out to apply it to the affected areas 3 or 4 times a day, it's been working great! So they're right, it's even good for babies.

It works wonders for dry chapped skin like you mentioned for your daughter. And best thing is that it doesn't have any chemicals either! Email me for more info. or check out www.livetotalwellness.com/cindygeoff or www.2abetterlife.com

K., I have used LANSINOH brand of Lanolin (the cream for breast feeding mothers, the purple tube) on many, many things. It works great on chapped skin, diaper rashes and even my husband's nose when he had a terrible cold!! Good luck

Going to sound a little crazy but both the Pediatrician and the Pharmacist recommended Lotrimin AF. Don't freak, it's Lotrimin - Athlete's Foot. I refused to buy it out of pride and disgust but once I finally broke down and did it, it solved the problem.
Good Luck!
