Acupuncture for Anxiety/Panic/Post Tramatic Stress Dissorder?

Has anyone tried acupuncture for anxiety/panic/stress? And did it work? I've been suffering from anxiety for years and after having an ectopic over the summer it has gotten worse. I'm also suffering from muscle tension which at times can be severe. I am seeing a therapist but do not want to take medications. If anyone has tried it and seen some results, let me know!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went for 2 sessions.. could not relax there at all. Actually ended up having anxiety over the needles and what they are doing to me. After the first session I was ok, but after second one i had an anxiety attack. maybe this is not for me :(

Hi L.,

Yes, I tried acupuncture for stress about a year ago. I found it very relaxing and soothing and fell asleep everytime after I got the needles put in. I loved it, but it was expensive and not covered by insurance. I'd give it a try, but get a referral if you can. The woman I went to, Betty Rigi is in Orange, and I see that you are in LA. If you are in OC on a regular basis or don't mind driving in, she also works on Saturdays, or at least she did last year. Here is her contact information, if you are interested:

I wish you the best and hope you get some relief!

I have never done acupuncture for anxiety, although I have used it for other things. I would encourage you to look into Lifespan Integration Therapy. I have been doing it for several months and it has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced my anxiety. I have PTSD as the result of almost dying from a medical emergency, so I know the stressed feeling you're talking about. I have been amazed how easily and quickly this therapy has helped me.

In the meantime, maybe try Rescue Remedy. It's a Bach Flower remedy that always worked really well for me in the moment. I never took any medicine besides this one.

Good luck,
B.

I have tried it before.. it worked to some degree.. mostly because at the onset of treatment in that... the room was relaxing :) and then for a couple of hours afterward.. apart from that.. I found that exercise and nutrition do more for me... e.g. more green foods in my diet def help me relax more as oppose to sugar and caffeine... two things I have to watch.. also.. I've read that a lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to anxiety.. so you might want to read up that as well..
oh and a/e has a new series on anxiety disorders.. u may want to check that out.. it was on last night.. while you might have a specific disorder they are discussing (e.g. Agoraphobia) mispl? I still think when it comes to anxiety, there are always some commonalities. i learned a lot last night when I was watching the doctor (whose name escapes me) walk two patients thru their disorders.. one woman hadnt left the house in years and the last time she did, she had a HUGE panic attack in her car.. which of course, he had get into.. it was tough at first for her. BIG TIME tough. but he got her to work thru it. seems that you can to work thru the initial anxiety and feel the discomfort and build from there.. def check out the series was very enlightening..

best of luck to you

Hi L. K :-)

Acupuncture is a wonderful Energy Medicine modality. It works on the premise of opening up the channels of energy so it can flow properly. It is one aspect of Energy Medicine. There are many modalities out there so you have quite the journey to do the research.

I am a Registered Nurse and an Energy Medicine Practitioner and I utilize a holistic system of health care called BodyTalk. It works on ALL levels of body, mind and spirit and can look at anxiety, panic, stress as well as multitudes of other issues. You can read more about BodyTalk on my website www.amyfreundbodytalk.com

The best thing about BodyTalk is that is is a system which empowers the individual to work with their own body wisdom.. who know better than your own inner wisdom what is best! BodyTalk works at the level of "priority" which is why I love it most... it consults the bodymind as to what it wants to look at, in what particular order, utilizing whichever technique or plan it states.

Hugs,
A. R.N., Energy Medicine Practitioner, Advanced Certified BodyTalk Practitioner and Instructor

YOu might also look into the practice of Tapping (just google the term and find the main site). I am currently using it to get over my fear of heights/bridges, and my therapist told me it works great for general anxiety. It can be used in conjunction with any other therapy, according to what he told me. Also, you might do well to schedule regular massages. If your doctor can prescribe them, since they would be therapeutic, you might get insurance to cover part of the cost.

I have not tried acupuncture for anxiety, but I have for migraines. I saw L. Anne Gibile at Acu-energize (____@____.com) - she is on Beach Blvd near Adams. I will share with you that I had also resisted taking any anti-depressants for years because I was so frightened of them. Once I got on SSRIs I was able to do so much work in therapy and I accomplished so much more than I had in all the years without medication. Once I didn't have to fight brain chemistry I was able to truly work on my issues. Good luck. L

I've seen a few acupuncturists over the years and others were more helpful with anxiety than some. One, literally told me that I would laugh all the way to Arizona on a flight ALONE with my 3 children who were under 6. I did. I was calm and content and so were they. This acupuncturist is Chinese and has done this for 43 years. I see one now and the needles hurt (unlike the others) AND I do get relaxed, but it's different.

After my chiropractor adjusts me, I actually have more relaxation for longer....but once again, that's not with every chiro I've seen.

The best thing that is a sure thing I have found was taking these 2 supplements my doctor gave me. I sometimes order online, if I can't get into her office.

Adrenal Support for anxiety and STRESS.
CalMag Plus which allows me to sleep REALLY well, and relaxes my muscles naturally.

So many of my friends have used these for postpartum issues, divorces and others, just to get through the days. A couple of them have actually been able to get off their meds because of these.

Good luck sweetie.

Yes, it will help. I suffered with anxiety for all my life and finally got medication for it, Buspar, which helped me so much that it was like a miracle in my life. But, when I wanted to get off the meds to get pregnant I did a combination of Accupuncture, chiropractic and talk therapy and it was all very beneficial. If you'd like recommendations-just send me a message and I'll tell you who I went to.
Best of luck:)
