Aching Hips During Pregnancy

I wake up every morning with hips that ache so much it hurts to walk. As the day progresses, the aching does not get much better. I notice the aching is much worse on rainy days, which have been occurring quite often here lately. I am only 30, but could this be arthritis? My hips have done this before pregnancy, but only rarely and never this bad. Is there anything I can do? My diet is very healthy, no caffeine, plenty of sleep. Any suggestions/ideas?

What can I do next?

I have had two babies and am pregnant with my third....with the last two, my hip went out of joint, always when I began putting on a few more pounds. Last time I was walking thru the yard and all the sudden it went out and I could not take another step, my dad had to come to my rescue and help me get into the house which was humiliating to say the least. Anyhow, for the first time in my life I sought out a chiropracter (sp?)
and i went in every two days and he popped it back into place and trained it. The pain went away and I felt better all the way around from the adjustments! I know how hip pain feels and I H. you get some relief soon!

Hi. I also had bad hip pain during the night when I was pregnant (both times, but worse with the second one). Mine didn't stick around during the day, so it was a little different though. One thing that helped was I put one of those "egg crate" foam pads under my sheet, on top of my mattress. That helps to get a bit more air circulation and stopped some of the achiness. I also had a prenatal massage and asked them to focus on my hips more than usual. They showed me how to rub them to increase circulation and decrease pain in the mornings.

Good luck!!

Hmmm...its hard to say...but its VERY common for your hips to hurt you during pregnancy. Especially the further you go along, but they can even start hurting from the beginning. I would guess that this is mostly from the pregnancy but then you say you had it before hand so I'm not sure. However, when I was pregnant there were days my hips hurt so bad I could barely walk myself. That being said, I have no hip pain post pregnancy (almost 3 years ago)

My hips were killing me during pregnancy. My midwife prescribed massage therapy, which helped a lot (my insurance covered it, so if your's does it might be worth a try) and I did prenatal yoga, which helped a bit too.

Other than that it is just very common....
Good luck!

With my first pregnancy I had some hip pain toward the end and it would get out of joint as I walked. I was teaching at the time and I remember walking down the hall with the kids and having to stop and get my hip back in place before moving on. It was a hassle and sometimes pretty painful. I think I was around 7 1/2 to 8 months when it set in. I did not really do anything for it, but once I had given birth and had a week or two of recovery, I did not have any further problems. I did not have the same problem with my second pregnancy, though, so that was good.

Unfortunately hip pain is pretty common with pregnancy and I found it only got worse the bigger I got. Besides sleeping with the pillow between your knees, I also found it helpful to have a body pillow behind me and another regular one underneath my big belly - there wasn't much room for hubby in bed with me and all my pillows! But my hips and pelvis were KILLING me the next morning if I didn't have support all around during the night!

Also, I went to a chiropractor late in my pregnancy to get the baby to turn head down - as a bonus, the adjustments ended up helping quite a bit with the pelvic and hip pain. Before getting adjusted I would barely be able to hobble to the shower in the morning! Good luck!

Hi S.,

Sleep on your side with a pillow (or pillows) between your knees to keep them shoulder width apart. This is very important to anyone, not just pregnant women. Pregnant women just appreciate the relief a little bit more, lol.

Also, a principled upper cervical chiropractor can help as well. Arthritis develops because of things not being as they should. I'm not saying you have it but it can be prevented and completely cured as well. You just have to do the right things.

Make sure your prenatal vitamin does not utilize a sulfonate or gluconate delivery system. Both of these can cause issues like this. Not all prenatals are good for you. Ask the doctor and if you're not satisfied with his answer, feel free to get back in touch with me. I can send you information on the one I use.

Congratulations on your little one!

i didn't try this, but a friend found that a prentatal hip brace really helped reduce the pain in her hips. like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I5W7GM/ref=pd_lpo_k2...

i found a prenatal massage that focused on relieving the pain in my hips made a huge difference... the masseuse said that it was stretching the piriformus muscle. so you could do stretches that target the piriforums, too.

I'm 33 and I have arthritis. I've had it for years. Each pregnancy is harder and harder on the joints in your body. It certainly *could* be arthritis, but it doesn't mean that it definitely is. Since you can't really take anything buy Tylenol for it anyway during pregnancy, I would just have it checked out if it continues after you have your baby.

I would also suggest -- get a pillow to sick between your knees. Lay on your left side and hold the pillow between your knees. This is better for your hips, doing this may help you wake up less sore. If your belly is large enough you can also get another pillow to place under your belly for added support.
