Ever been to a chiropractor? I am going for the first time in my life - I have 2 kids - and found out that they have special things they do to help relieve the pains from pregnancy. I had never thought about it while I was pregnant - wish I had. It's worth a shot. I know how you're feeling!! Good luck!!

My sister had awful hip pain. Her hips spread so quickly that her hip actually dislocated (she already had some alignment issues and pregnancy was more than they could take). Physical therapy helped but it took several weeks before she noticed any improvement. I would keep going to PT and give it some time to work, hopefully it will start to help. I had sciatic pain that never did get better.

If you have seen a chiropractor before I would try that. Even if you have not seen one before now might be a good time to see one. I have not had a child transverse before so can't help with that. Have you tried heat or ice packs. A way to make a couple of inexpensive Heat/Ice packs is to take a tube sock and fill it with rice or beans( pinto) and tie it at the end. We keep a few in a lg. ziploc bag the freezer for the ice packs and keep the others at room temp and warm in the microwave for 1-2 minutes for heat packs. Good Luck!

i had sciatica with both my pregnancies and i know how much it hurts. in the morning your fine but by the time evening rolls around you can barely move. both babies layed right against my sciatic nerve. there are excerises you do that'll kind make the baby shift around and releive the pressure. try getting on all fours and roll back up and then slowly drop it back and then let you belly relax and drop towards the floor. or lay on you back and draw you knees up and kind of roll up into a ball and gently rock back and forth...hope it helps...seeing a chiroprator or massage therapist might help too if those don't work.

Hi A.,

Many people have mentioned Chiropractic, please check online at www.icpa4kids.org to find a Dr. with extra training in pregnancy care and the Webster technique.
I do not live in your area, I am in Raleigh NC and have a diplomate for such care. Many doctors refer their patients in pain to my office even after they have tried PT and it helps greatly. The Webster technique can also help with letting the baby change position after everything is in line.
Check it out to get some relief.

Chiro, chiro, chiro! Being out of alignment can cause the baby's position to be transverse or breech (although you're still early enough that the baby will likely change before you go into labor anyway -- about 25% of babies are still not head-down by 30 weeks, but only 3-4% of babies are not head-down at the start of labor). Your symptoms sound like sciatica, and a chiropractor can definitely help with this. Get help sooner, rather than later -- my experience with pain like this in pregnancy is that the longer you wait and the bigger you get, the worse the pain is. You shouldn't have to spend the rest of your pregnancy miserable!

Well all I can say is that I had the same pain with my son. And there was nothing the doctors could do about it. He was my biggest baby and my last so I just had to stop working and stay home and limit my activities. :-)

I know that relaxin which is released in pregnancy makes your joints looser. I had a lot of hip pain and also experienced a popping feeling as if my hip was coming out of joint. I am not sure if this helps but the chemical doesn't go away until six months after delivery or cessation of breastfeeding. I don't know if physical therapy is the best thing for your situation I would check with another doctor who is experienced with pregnancy. Good luck

I have not had a transverse baby, but I had a lot of hip/sciatica pain when I was pregnant. I ended up going to a chiropractor who did treatments that were somewhat unconventional. By that I mean he worked more with my mind as he would not manipulate my spine while pregnant. He really did provide relief for me even though I did not understand what he was doing! I just did what he told me to. Will they let you put heat on it? This may not help at all, but I can definately sympathize with you. Good luck!

I had severe 'hip' pain during the last half of my pregnancy and thought my hip had come out of socket, or was about to dislocate! Turns out the baby was putting pressure on nerves that were causing sciatic pain. Apparently, pressure or swelling around the sciatic nerve and radicular nerve can cause some pretty severe pain that feels like your hip is on fire. (I swore to my doctor that it was my HIP that hurt, but he finally convinced me that it was the nerve pain that made it feel like it was my hip.) It got worse as the day went on, and it was a horrible sharper pain when I went to sit down or get up from a sitting position. I used to dred going to the bathroom because I knew it would hurt worse to sit down on the toilet and get up again! Stretching excercises like laying on the floor bringing your knees to your chest (yeah, right!) can help a little. I also laid down on my back with my left leg straight, and bent my right leg and brought it over my left, twisting my hips over to the left and trying to keep both my shoulders on the floor. Then I would reverse it. I did this several times a day and while it didn't take the pain away, it did help lessen it. The good news is that it finally went away a few weeks after delivery. By the way, my Doctor told me it was an O-MOP pain.....ONE of the MISERIES OF PREGNANCY (It was a good thing he was standing across the room when he said it!) I also used ice and warm heat on my lower back which sometimes helped a little. Good Luck and I hope it feels better soon!

Has the Dr. said anything about round ligament pain? Do you think that could be it? Or could it be sciatic nerve pain from the baby pressing on your sciatic nerve? Ask your Dr. about those possibilities. I had real bad groin/thigh pain with my first baby and it was awful. They told me it was my uterus stretching the round ligaments. I had to take extra strength tylenol to get rid of the pain. I would be careful with the PT if it hurts worse. You may just be overdoing it during the day and need to rest more. Are you taking enough calcium? Getting the ultrasound like the other lady said would be my first step. I'm pregnant too, 20 weeks, and I know pain of any kind freaks me out too. You need to stress to your Dr. how worried you are, and keep on him/her until they figure out what's wrong. That's what they get paid for.
Good Luck and take care.

I had severe hip pain on one side with my first child because she was laying on the main artery going through my body. Can't remember if it was left or right side. The doctor said there was nothing to do until the baby moved. I went against everything the doctor said and I drank Mt. Dew for a week! And my baby moved off the main artery and I didn't have any more problems. And she was perfectly fine when born! Also, since you think your baby is transverse, this may help him/her move.

I would visit a Chiropractor ASAP, likely your pelvis is tilted, hips out of alignment, or baby is pressing on a nerve. It also could become more involved the longer you wait. A DC pelvic adjustment will fix any of those problems. There are Chiropractic advanced training that specializes in pregnancy & newborn care, so ask for this certification when making the appt. Not all Chiropractors are created equal.
I have found chiropractic adjustments usually more beneficial than PT.
At 24 wks, you have plenty of time to get a transverse baby turned, if that is what is causing the problem. Again, I believe a specially trained chiropractor would be the best one to handle this complication, ASAP, getting the baby turned by DC adjustments not only will make you hurt less, it will be safer and save you a surgical delivery.
There are also exercises you can do yourself that will help turn the baby, but you would want to make 100% sure its in the wrong position, before you attempted them, or things could go from bad to worse, instead of bad to better. A midwife or DC should be able to help you with this. Most pob's would rather just schedule a C/S than bother with it, also these natural techniques are not taught in medical school, so the ob may not know of them.

It's been almost 19 years, but I still remember immobilizing hip and back pain from my last pregnancy. My OB sent me to a leather worker who made a special type of leather back brace that lifted the baby up off my hips mechanically.
This was up north, I haven't heard of this since I moved south.
Have you been told that the baby is definitely transverse? You may want to ask the doctor if there are any safe exercises that you might be doing to help to turn the baby.
I feel for you, good luck!

Since you mentioned having three other children, is there a possibility that you need more calcium? A friend had problems with her hips after having three children and was in the early stages of osteoporosis. It seems having babies really draws on the bodies calcium stores. There are tests that can be done to determine this. I hope you get some relief soon.

Please see a chiropracter. When I was in my early 20's I suffered extreme hip pain for two years. I had a doctor tell me I had arthritis in my hip, I was like, "What the hell, I'm 24?!?" I kept taking pain killers and anti-inflammatories and I never could make it stop. It turned out that the ankle injury I had suffered a few years before threw my low back out of alignment from limping on my good foot. Sometimes going to the chriopracter can be uncomfortable, too, but after a few visits (if it's your back causing the problem) you should notice a difference.

I'm not sure what part of the state you're in but I have a wonderful chiropracter with a gentle touch who adjusted me while I was pregnant, and he now adjusts my son, too!

I hope at 24 weeks your baby still has plently of time to get into "launch position," and you find someone who can help you.

With my second I had severe pain in my right hip area for about a week. I almost fainted one day because of it. When I checked with the doctor she said that the baby was probably pushing on a nerve and that when it got severe or I thought I might faint to lay down on the opposite side and don't move for 10 min. I had to do this a couple of times. Gravity would helped shift the baby off the sensitive spot. Luckily he moved away from it after a brief time and quickly thereafter was too big to move back. Both my boys were acrobats in the wound, thus why the first had the cord around his neck at birth, dooming me to c-sections. Try stimulating the baby to move. if you can't succeed yourself check into a chiro. or a massuese who is certified in prenatal massage. I had a massage just a few days before having #2 and it was wonderful and alleviated a lot of pain.

Chiropractic work sounds like a great idea.

If that doesn't work, I would suggest osteopathic manipulation by a D.O. (doctor of osteopathy). You can look for one here http://www.osteopathic.org/directory.cfm and then call and see if they do osteopathic manipulation, some do and some don't.

Another idea is CranioSacral therapy, you can find a practitioner here http://www.iahp.com/pages/search/index.php

I hope you feel better soon.

I am so sorry that you are in all this pain. I was fortunate that I did not experience this with either of my pregnancies. I had a midwife. She told me that if my son did turn that if you lay flat on your bed and place pillows under your bottom that this will elevate your pelvis and the baby should change position. I think she said that you should do this at least six hours a day (if I remember correctly). You might could try it, see if it helps. You would probably have to do it for at least 7 days to see if it would help.

I definately would try chiropractic. A good chiro can adjust you without any issue with being pregnant. My Chiropractor's assistant has been pregnant many times and continues with her adjustments. It sounds like the baby is sitting on your sciatic nerve. The Chiro can also teach pressure points to rub to take the pain away. I would go to a chiro before I start PT. Also a medical doc is not going to recommend chiropractic as it is direct opposites of what they believe.
Find a good Chiro that does pressure points and even the BEST system. go to www.morter.com to find a provider. (Just click on providers and then go to your state to locate one in your area.) It is very gentle. If they are bone crunchers, don't go there. My chiro doesn't just use his hands for adjustments but also has instruments that are more gentle, I think, than manual manipulation. Give this a try as it can almost be instant relief!
Good luck.

Hi A.,

I agree with Christine. Chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial during pregnancy because they can eliminate pains and pressure caused by the growing baby while also helping the baby get into optimal positioning for delivery. Good luck.

I also wanted to mentioned the website http://www.spinningbabies.com/ for information on baby positioning.

Here's the link for the blogspot which has some great information as well. http://spinningbabies.blogspot.com/

Find a chiropractor that is knowledeable about pregnancy. I went to one weekly with my last pregnancy, they can even gently get babies to move into a better position. (she wasnt in the area or I would recommend her) Good luck!
