A Lot of Blow Outs!

So my son usually poops once a day and it's in the morning when he is waking up. Which isn't bad cause I can usually count on it. But lately he has had blowouts every time! I know huggies are for wide babies and pampers are for tall babies, but what about both? He is very tall and very wide. He's 6 months and is 25lbs (yeah clothing him has NOT been fun) and now fits 12-18 month pants. Any suggestions that would fit both extreame sizes? We are currently using Huggies snug and fit.
*We just went up a size and it's still doing it. Other than the blowouts Huggies are perfect. Fit great around his huge hips and chunky thighs.

What can I do next?

You might try the Walmart brand, that's what worked for my daughter. The other tip I have is fold the front and back top of the diaper in. It works like a little flap and catches a lot of what would explode out.

Good luck, poop blow outs are awful! Let us know how it goes

I had better luck with pampers cruisers... sams club sells them in bulk... huggies leaked on both my kids.

Switch to cloth! I had maybe 2 blow outs with my exclusively breastfed baby after I switched to cloth. It was really nice not having to change her clothes every 5 minutes, didn't have to feel like I was buying/spending money on diapers all the time and I could control what was next to her skin! And with the adjustable fit of lots of brands out there now you can find the perfect fit for your big boy.

If you are interested I can give the skinny on using cloth. Way easier than everyone imagines!

How about the specail overnight diapers... I can not remember at what range they start the sizes but around 1 year my daughter was having blow outs and we used the overnight huggies diapers and that seemed to help.

Just found a link so you know what you are looking for if you do go this route: http://www.huggieshappybaby.com/products/index.aspx?uri=d...
Seems like they would have a size already that would work for your little big guy :)

I don't know about the tall and wide thing. It just sounds to me like you need to go up a size. I never liked Huggies at all. They always leaked for my kids. I like Pampers Cruisers or Luvs, but with my first who didn't have diaper allergies, I was also able to use White Cloud and loved those! Loved saving the money, too! GL!

Where does it usually blow out? The side or the back? We used to swear by Pampers, but have actually switched to the Target brand. Not just because they're less expensive, but they fit well, are soft, don't bunch up funny, and are SUPER absorbent! The absorbent liner goes all the way up the front and to about 1.5" from the top of the waist in back, and there is a lot of elastic in the back to keep it snug. Good luck with the blowouts! They are terrible!

My youngest daughter was the fattest baby you ever saw. Huge thighs on that kid (at least 4 fat rolls on each thigh, and even her butt had rolls!). We used Pampers Cruisers and did not have a problem. I always had blowouts with Huggies and Luvs, and found it worth the money to buy Pampers Cruisers.

Good luck, diaper drama is no fun! :p

Its funny because I had never heard the tall vs wide reason for using Pampers vs Huggies, but all the baby girls I know fit better in Huggies (because of the curved fit) and Pampers work better for the boys (because of the straight cut)...including my 2 boys! I would suggest trying to go up another size or two...my oldest went from size 2 to size 4 for a week then to size 5 to keep from blowing out with his watery poop (he had milk allergy that kept him from getting more solid poo when we started solids). But that would be my suggestion...go up a couple sizes and try Pampers Cruisers...worked for me x 2!!!

Have his poo's changed and now he's having blow outs? If so, I think he is reacting to a food.

For example, my son was doing that when I gave him a tiny bit of agave nectar (instead of syrup) on pancakes. He had major blowouts with that and now I know not to give him that.

My baby always has blowouts and we were using Huggies Snug and Dry. We recently switched to Huggies Movers and so far (it's been 2 days), no blowouts! Cross your fingers =P

My boys had the same problem with blowouts and I was so paranoid to go anywhere, afraid that a blowout might hit, so I created the "Baby Blowout Protector". I know your little one is out of the blowout stage at this point, but if you have the same trouble with your next child, check out my "Baby Blowout Protector". It protects from the stress and mess that a blowout creates, containing it within the protector. Check it out at: babyblowoutprotector.blogspot.com.

If the blowouts aren't caused by a virus, I would try cloth diapers. We have only had blowouts with viral illnesses, and still, not as bad as some friends have had.

if the blowouts smell odd, it's that darn stomach virus. I would just brave it out until the poos are normal again. In the mean time, I would get more Bananas, Rice, Apples, and Toast in him to help bind his poos.

Meanwhile, Overnights are a great idea --- and after the pampers cruisers fiasco, I wouldn't go with them. My kid started having horrible rashes, not to mention smelling like a chemical plant --- whether the diaper was dirty or not. Huggies has an overnight brand.

I had to respond...
My daughter was having the same problem of explosive poops. I took her to an integrated doctor (Western and Chinese) who looked at the flora in her belly. The flora was all off balance... she had too much of one ... We actually had to put her antibiotics (which the doc is not quick to do) and within seven days her poppies were normal. I wish I had gone in sooner. She had no other symptoms other than explosive poops... Get to the bottom of the blow outs... pun intended
On another note: Sje also had eczema and we did a blood test (sent to - Genova Diagnostics is a global leader in functional laboratory testing, pioneering innovative new approaches to personalized medicine) They do really great testing.

Randomly it came back that she had an allergy to oranges. I stopped as a nursing mom drinking OJ - with in two days her eczema was cleared up. I saved the money of putting a steroidal cream and also that could cause an autoimmune disease in the future.

Megan,
I used to use two diapers sometimes: the regular size on first and then the next size up on top, when one of my children was going through a time like this. I also would sometimes put plastic pants on top of a disposable diaper. It don't solve everything, but it can help.
I bet he has great squeezie legs!
Happy Mothering,
L.

Both of my kids were about the same size as your son but built much differently. My poor son has almost no rear end, and my daughter is on her way to a larger one.

We had problems with all diapers when blow outs were happening. It wasn't the shape of the diaper (we tried to go with those that had elastic waists in the back) - but it had to do with the quantity of the poop and the ability of the diaper to wick it away. Unfortunately, some blow outs are just common, and we'd keep extra clothes on us at all times and at Day Care just in case.

I'd stick with what works the majority of the time as no diaper will be able to contain everything. At 2, our daughter had a blow-out last night (all over my arm) at the park. It's easily been 6 months since the last one.

Just to share a chunky baby story - our daughter was born average (7 lbs, 8 oz) but quickly grew to a BIG baby. We were in Chicago visiting an Oncologist, and in the elevator, one of the employees commented on her "juicy thighs". I had to start calling her Munchkin so Chunkapoo wasn't the nickname that stuck.

In addition to what everyone else has said, you could also try buying some training pants to put over his diaper at night - they make some really comfy looking ones - not like the stiff plastic ones - maybe that would help contain some of the mess at least and since he is a big guy I'm sure a small size would work for him (since they are designed for toddlers).

I'd also look into any new foods he may have been introduced to just in case he is having a reaction.

Good luck!

You've already had some great suggestions. I would try the overnights or going up a size. Seems like when I have started having trouble with leaks or blowouts with my two boys it was a sure sign it was time to go to a larger size. Good luck!
