Does anyone out there know of a good weight loss program for people with diabetes? I'm hoping there is one that has meal plans and stuff, since I need to have everything laid out for me.

What can I do next?

Weight watchers is the best and realistic as it teaches you portion control and helps you know how much to eat to lose weight. It is just with the food you normally would eat so it isn't food to buy and you can do it at parties, family gatherings, traveling etc. Good luck

If you already know what you can't eat- weight watchers is great because they teach you how to moderate. I found with the program I needed to eat something every hour- I could not go a whole day but I was able to find snacks that I could eat every hour that had low points and kept me in on track.

My husband is a diabetic that controls his sugar with diet and exercise.
If you follow the diabetic diet to the letter, you will lose weight - it will fall off faster than you can imagine. He exercises 3 - 4 times a week.
Stay away from carbs. No rice, no potato, no pasta. No white bread - just rye, pumpernickel, or swirl. Lots of chicken and fish. No sweets. Eat nuts - almonds are best. Lots of salad. No alcohol - nothing... not one drop! You need to eat 5 times a day - small portions.
Go to the nutritionist. Ask her for recipes and such.
We do a LOT of grilling and eat a LOT of fish and salad.
This diet can be hard to do with kids because they like and need starches. If you make a dinner and cook rice to go with, just be sure you don't eat it. The rest of them can eat it.
The other thing you need to do is once you get your sugar under control, you need to figure out what makes it spike... Eat something different for dinner and it is bound to show up on the next morning's reading (or not)...

Weight Watchers has a program for people with diabetes. I do weight watchers and love it! your meeting leader would be able to help alot more! I think they will still let you sit in on a class for free, you could do that and ask some questions.

You should really work with your local Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietician to come up with an individualized plan.

I've worked in the world of diabetes for almost a decade, and the challenge with the disease is that it affects everyone differently and is progressive - meaning, it will continue to get worse as you age no matter how well you care for yourself. The pancreas simply begins to fail, and no medications/treatments available at this time have been proven (in humans) to stop that progression.

There are a lot of diets out there. But, there's nothing someone with Diabetes can't eat. Weight loss may not be related to what or how much you're eating either. It may be a mix of that, your medications, and your hormone levels (insulin, glucagon, amylin, GLP-1, leptin, ghrelin are just a few examples of hormones affecting weight).

Please see a Diabetes Educator and don't take our advice as the golden rule. Chances are, your insurance will cover the cost of the appointment, and they'll customize a meal plan based upon your weight loss goals, tell you how many carb exchanges you should have per meal (how many grams of carbs), etc.

There's good advice on sites like http://www.diabeteseducator.org/ and http://www.diabetes.org/

There are a few products FDA approved for Diabetes that have weight loss as a side effect by replacing hormones naturally deficient in people with Diabetes. It really depends on if you're type 1 or type 2, though.

Good luck.

I've had diabetes for 8 years and my mom did before that. I like the South Beach Diet. It was developed by a heart dr in Florida. He focus on the right carbs (whole grain) and the right fats (we all need some in our diet). He developed the program to help his heart patients. When he tried it out himself, he lost weight. He does have meal plans and it is restrictive the first two weeks but that's when you'll see the greatest amount of weight loss. Cut out the whites-white bread, white rice, white potatoes, etc.and alcohol. All these change into glucose as fast as table sugar and will spike your blood sugar. You can have carbs, just make them whole grain. You can even get whole grain pasta now. Get a copy of the glycemic index. Stay on the low end. The lower the item is on the index, the slower the harder it is for the body to turn it to sugar. That will help to keep your blood sugar more stable and to keep you fuller. Conventional wisdom says diabetics can't have sweets. Recently, drs have backed off that. They now encourage occasional sweets. I have some receipes for diabetics if you want some that won't spike your sugar. Talk with your dietian if you haven't already. He/she'll help you develop a meal plan and then you can cut out or add the the South Beach Diet a snack or two or whatever you need. I'd be happy to talk with you by personal email if you like to let you know what works best for me.

I have a great solution. Isagenix is the world leader in nutritional cleansing. It was developed by a guy who was a diabetic. (Bitten by a recluse spider) He was trying to find ways for himself to be healthy, but eventually shared it with everyone. There is too much to tell on this page so I suggest go to my web site at http://phytomom.isagenix.com. I have several friends that think this is the bomb! They have a weight lose program established just for diabetes. You can also go to www.isavideos.com. The program is very highly nutritious. Drinking a shake in the morning, a big salad for lunch which you provide, and a shake for dinner. Before you go to bed you drink a special cleanse juice that cleanses your cells while you sleep. I have friends that have lost 70 pounds in 5 months, (and he cheated all the time). I am a nutrition coach so if you have any questions get back to me

South Beach should be good for diabetics mainly because it is avoids high glycemic index foods and appetite is controlled by maintaining blood sugar. You can also call your doc or a local hospital and ask them if they have any diabetes nutrition management classes available.

I'm not sure how it would work for someone with diabetes, but the Flat Belly Diet is working really well for me. It talks about cutting out processed sugars, fats, carbs, etc...and sticking with whole grains and good fats....in fact - you eat one good fat with every meal. You also eat 4 smaller meals a day....about every 4 hours.

Also, have you tried Livestrong.com? It's free to sign up and it keeps track of your daily nutritional intake (as long as you track it) and, if I remember correctly, you can track specifically as a diabetic.

Good luck!
