9 Month Old Daughter Straining to Poop

My daughter is 9 months old and is having a difficult time pooping. She'll push and strain and nothing comes out. It's been like this for a couple of days now. We let her drink water and apple juice thinking that fluids are the answer, but unfortunately it is not working. She's never had issues pooping and we're sure it's not her food because she has been on solids since she was 4 months old. And even then she had no difficulty pooping.

The reason why this is worrying me is because she is slowly losing her appetite. She is starting to refuse her foods and will only drink 2oz out of the 8oz formula bottle she usually drinks. She will drink water and juice when she gets thirsty and will pee it out but for solids it's like their stuck inside.

Do any moms have any suggestions on how i can help her poop? Or should I just be patient and her poop will come? I have tried sitting there with her and spread her cheeks apart (as apposed to when she pushes she squeezes her cheeks together) thinking maybe that will help but again nothing.

Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

SHE POOPED!!! Went to the store and took some advise. The prune juice and the suppositories were awsome. Why didn't I think of that? I really appreciate all the moms out there for helping.

Thanks a bunch =)

First, you should know that girls have a much higher inclination towards constipation. Second, I have a little girl (11 mo) who inclines toward the same and recommend you buy some organic Prune Juice and dilute it (50/50) for her to drink. Two ounces should suffice to help this pass. She may be losing her appetite from the constipation, so hopefully that will improve. If she doesn't like to drink it, you may also put the prune juice in applesauce or rice cereal to get her to eat it. I've done them all and sometimes she prefers one presentation over the other.

Well I just had this episode with my 4month old and figured out it was her rice cereal. What I had to do was get child suppository the CVS brand and cut it in half long ways and stuck it in slowly and it wasn't like 2 minutes and she pooped!!! I hadn't delt with that either till then and well I changed her to oatmeal cereal. Have you tried prunes or prune juice? 1/2 water and 1/2 juice.

She is constipated momma, makes her tummy hurt and feel smaller. No Apple juice and water isnt enough sometimes. Pear/Prune/Plum juice is very good to clean her out, apple can actually stop you up. If she is having issues eating get to the pediatrician and get her a suppository or anything else they might have. Also, no matter how gross it is , if you can see it and its not coming out put a glove on and help that poop come out my digging it out. Ah the things we do as parents to help our kids not suffer. good luck mama

get childrens suppositories and use one on her..i used to use them on my son when he was a baby..not often but when times got tough..the doc said its totally safe..and it works instantly u can get them at the pharmacy..also apple juice constipates. good luck..use the suppositories if you're worried about them call your doctor and ask if they're ok..mine said they were fine and even said "good mama" when i told her that's what i did.

Hi Betty. Try prune juice with the apple. Whenever my DD has pooping issues we either drink a half cup of prune juice or she eats a serving of prunes that I cut up (she's 2) and give to her with some other fruit. If it continues for a couple more days you might want to ask your ped. about a stool softener suppository.

Good luck! It's hard to see them having problems, hang in there.

Three days is too long for a formula fed baby to go without a bowel movement. Pears, prunes, plums, raisins will all help loosen her up, but you may need to take action from the other end. Call your pediatrician first thing in the morning (if not today) and get their suggestion for a suppository. They make a liquid pediatric OTC suppository now that is effective and a lot less uncomfortable for the kid.

If the suppository doesn't do the trick, I would insist on seeing the doctor as soon as possible. If she's never had a problem like this before...and you can't think of any triggers there would be something bigger at play.

it sounds like she is constipated and doesnt want to eat because she is "full" on the inside. My son does this. I give him one prune and that is usually all it takes. With in a few hours, pop..er shall I say poop! As for the spreading the cheeks thing...good thinking, maybe try when she is laying down and help her push her knees back, like when giving birth, it opens up the pelvis and might help a little. Good luck!

For my little guy (when he was having problems like this) and he would scream and finally get something out that was hard as a rock we started mixing prune juice with his cereal and then I found baby food with prunes in it at the store! That was much easier on both of us. Lots of the fruits helped him (and I tried not to give him rice cereal and bananas both of which clogged him up). Two more fruits that seemed to help him were peaches and pears. And changing his cereal to oatmeal was better for him too!

Good luck!

PB8, which is a probitoic, helps a TON and it's not harsh on the intestines like fiber, etc. We open a capsule and 1/2-1 capsule every day or every other day. It keep our kid's immune systems up and keeps everyone regular. If she continues to strain like that, she can end up with hemorrhoids.

There are various things you can do:
1. Prune juice... Try to get her to drink 3-4 oz daily and she'll be cleared up in no time. Also, it can be a long term aid to keeping her regular. You can dilute it to 1/2 juice, 1/2 water. If it's not working, decrease the water.
2. Karo Syrup. It has a type of sugar that our bodies doesn't digest and it draws liquid to the intestines. The suggestion is 2 tsp per bottle.
3. Insert a Q-tip coated with vaseline or lanolin into her anus. Turn it around for about a minute or so. If no bowel movement, try using your pinky finger covered in plastic wrap, coated with vaseline or lanolin. Rotate for about a minute or so. I have done the latter and it has helped my daughter have a movement in about 15 mins. I was super grossed by the idea of doing it, but... we do whatever to help our kids!
4. When you see her pushing/straining, take her and move her legs in a bicycle motion.

Her pediatrician has recommended miralax over suppositories, since they are in a stage where they need to learn to pass their bowels.

Hope this helps!

Give her baby food prunes. Works like a charm . We did this with my son everyday for breakfast, and it really helped!
