9 1/2 Month Old Starting to Self Wean, Supplement with Formula??

In the past 2 weeks, my daughter has decreased her breastfeeding to 3 times a day. First thing in the morning (alot of times she only wants to nurse on one side so I make sure she gets to the other side sometime in the morning) and then before/after nap (again, if she falls asleep before taking the other side, then I make sure she finishes up after nap) and then again at bedtime. So I try to make sure she at least gets a good feeding off both breasts 3 times. It's been hard to get her to nurse any other times because she is so nosey! If it's not her brother she wants to see, then one of the cats will meow then she needs to sit up and see the cat or simply just look around. I don't like pumping so she has been exclusively BF. Past 2 months I've been trying to get her used to a bottle and sippy cup which I put water or apple juice in. I use formula in her cereal in the morning so I have tried to mix some of it to put in a bottle to offer with her solid food meals (right now it's water or juice). I have the Target brand formula. It's not the best because it doesn't dissolves easy as Enfamil but it was super cheap. I don't know if it's necessary to even offer formula or if BF 3x day is enough for 9 1/2 month old. She doesn't seem to care for the formula. If I need to offer formula to supplement, is there another brand that maybe she might like better? She doesn't mind the Target formula in her cereal, just not as a drink. I do give her a yogurt everyday. I just want to make sure she is getting all the nutrition she should be and since I'm not sure what breastmilk offers that solid food doesn't, I don't want her to be missing on nutrients she needs. It could also be the bond breastfeeding creates and as soon as my DD (and my son at this age) doesn't get (or need) my milk anymore, I feel panicky, like they NEED breast milk to get all their vitamins and nutrients to grow. Need a little help.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't stress too much over it. If she won't nurse, then go ahead and supplement with formula. Yes, breast milk is the best nutrition she can possibly get... BUT if you are still nursing her when possible, it's not going to hurt her to get a little formula too. Thousands of healthy babies have thrived on formula alone.

That said... I know that around that same age my DD went on a nursing strike that lasted about 1 1/2 months. Turned out she was cutting 8 teeth all at once, and the sucking was uncomfortable for her. After those teeth finally cut, she went back to nursing full-on again, and I just weaned her this month. (she's 18 months now.)

You might also try giving her a small toy that she can fidget with while she's nursing. That way her hands and mind can be preoccupied and she doesn't get bored with nursing. If possible, maybe you can start nursing her in the bedroom or somewhere with less distractions.

Definitely drop the formula. There is no point at all to offer it to her, especially if she doesn't like it. Offer nutritious foods instead. Breastfeed as much as she wants, if it's 3 times a day, that's plenty. I remember my LO cut down on her feeds around 9 months, butby 11 mOnths she was back to like 5 for a few months. The formula is NOT adding any nutrients at this point, and it's just filling her tummy with stuff that's hard to break down. <3

The 3 times a day is fine... her efficiency at suckling is at it's peak, so she's getting more than you think. This easily distracted stage will not last too long and soon she'll be back to breastfeeding more and even cluster feeding.

I'd not give any formula, but water and watered down juice in a sippy is fine. Between the yogurt and breastmilk alone... she's all set. No nutrition other than breastmilk is NECESSARY until after 2 years old.

I think she is getting enough breast milk that she does not need formula to drink also. Mix it in her cereal if you want, but I would not stress about having her drink it. I would skip the bottle altogether though and have her drink water out of a sippy cup.

You can try mixing the breastmilk w/ formula in the bottle. I did that to get him on the bottle. Ask your Ped if you need to supplement at all.

I would just keep up the breastfeeding. My little one went on a mini-strike at 9 mos. b/c she was just too intersted in everything else. We just kept offering the breast and she continued until 11 1/2 mos.
