7 Yo Daughter with Recurrent Colds and Yeast Infection

Hi everyone. I hope someone can help. My otherwise healthy 7 year old girl has had a cold once a month for the past 3 months and developed a yeast infection. Her blood work was normal and the pediatrician said that it could be from physical stress (growing) and also emotional stress. This makes since but I don't understand why the vitamins and probiotics aren't working for her anymore. I want to know why her immune system is down. I was thinking about taking her to an allergist/immunologist as the next step. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great ideas! I forgot that the pediatrician did suggest trying Children's Zyrtec for one month. I'm just not sure if these could be allergies since she will get a temperature up to 100.2 when she gets sick. As for the yeast infection, she wasn't on antibiotics when it started. I'll try the Zyrtec and the other suggestions here, and try not to worry :) Thanks again!

It is totallynormal for kids to get colds.. my kids get colds.. My ped said kids get 7 colds a year and kids in day care get 3 x that many colds.. so 21 colds a year.

Most of hte colds they get are pretty mild.. but about once a year they get a "bad cold" fever cough and all of that..

Don't overthink this too much. Tis the season for colds and allergies.

Maybe try giving her some claratin or Allegra for a week. See if that helps.

Treat the yeast infection. Make sure she's cleaning herself properly after toileting (wipe from front to back).

Increase her vitamin D3 intake. That should take care of the colds. Ensure she's cleaning her hands with soap and water and not putting her fingers in her eyes, nose and mouth.

Probiotics don't work for everyone. Make sure she's getting a balanced diet...but don't go crazy about it. Let her eat what she's craving...it might be that she's deficient somewhere. Keep in mind...too much calcium means that the body cannot effectively absorb vitamin D because they use the same cell receptors. So try a little less calcium and more D.

Best of luck!

Just a thought...my son at 5-6-7-8 had the "re-curring cold" that went on FOREVER. Snot, snot and more snot.
Now that we (duh!) know it's seasonal allergies--better.
Have you tried her on Children's Claritan?

As for the yeast infection....overindulgence of sugar for Valentine's Day?

hey, i know you already posted your, what happened and all, but i used to get a yeast infection at least once a month. this went on for about 6 mos. it was after i had taken medication for something else, and that medication wiped out all my bacteria-good and bad. when i would go to the doctor they would give you a suppository which ultimately knocks out all bacteria, so you are back to square one and get yet another yeast infection. SO...i ended up hearing about Acidophilus which is a probiotic that you take once a day. after about a month of taking it my yeast infections not only cleared up but completely went away. i took it for about 6 mos and i have not had a yeast infection since. now, i don't know if a 7 yr old is ok to take this, but i don't really see why not, seeing as it is a natural supplement. and the reason everyone suggests yogurt is because it contains a small amount of Acidophilus, but it also contains a lot of sugar which actually makes yeast grow, so yogurt may not actually help. i'm sorry i don't know what to say about the cold part. but i know how uncomfortable yeast infections can be so i feel for her. hope everything turns out well, and i hope that this was at least a little helpful.

Kids get colds; particularly in the winter months. You do what you can to prevent it, but they are going to happen. It doesn't mean that they have a compromised immune system.

is she on antibiotics from the colds? if so thats what caused the yeast infections. I love my one doctor who never perscibes antibiotics fo cold viruses or ear infections caused by colds, he informed M. earlyon they do no goodother than upsetting the childs stomach and giving yeast infections and saved dosing out drugs for when its really needed.

My daughter, who is also 7, has been getting yeast infections since she was 3 or 4. The doctor just thinks she's sensitive down there, and tells us not to use soap at all on her skin, and to use Aveeno Baby lotion if she needs it and a very gentle shampoo. She can't have bubble bath. She is not supposed to stay in the bath long (showers are better but she doesn't like them), and needs to get very dry as soon as she gets out. She begged and begged for the kids' scented shampoos, and I just bought her one the other day--I was skeptical, but it said "extra gentle" on the outside. Sure enough, she is itching down there again...

So, try to keep her as dry as possible when she gets out of the bath. Feed her yogurt. (If you're using vitamins and probiotics, you're probably already doing that). Antibiotics can cause it, but you've said she's not on them, and my daughter gets them even without antibiotics.

My daughter also seems to have soap allergies, and they said the reaction has been bad enough to cause a yeast infection (for one of them), so the allergist visit probably wouldn't hurt.

We get our kids adjusted at the slightest start of anything and it's gone. Sometimes I add therapeutic dosages of vitamin A. Also, dandelion tincture can help clear out the liver gently. It should contain glycerin to make it palatable for your child. Vitamin A works amazing for ANY upper respiratory issues. Also, not all probiotics are created equally. We use PB8. Oregano works REALLY well for candida/yeast....even better than probiotics when it's been chronic. We use Thompson's Oregano. They are really small, but potent AND our 3 year old can swallow them. Our kids haven't even had a runny nose in almost 3 years.

I've been adjusted since I was 2 days old and I'm rarely ever sick...but like I said, when I feel "off", I'm sure to run in for an adjustment.

PS We have a friend whose kids were never sick and then after a set of vaccines, he's been constantly sick for over a year. Same thing happened to his brother at around 5.
