7 Year Old Fever 103 and Can't Have Motrin

Hi. My daughter was sent home from school early yesterday with a temp of 102. I gave her some childrens tylenol. She is very allergic to ibuprofen. Her face and lips swell up to where it doesn't even look like her! So, I got it under control yesterday with the tylenol. But, I did also take her to the dr. because her birthday is tomorrow and we are having a party on Saturday (we are rescheduling for next weekend) so I wanted to make sure it wasn't strep or anything. Test came back negative. So we went home and just had her rest and drink a lot of water. But, last night her temp. went up to 103 and right now is at 102.8. Tylenol is only getting it down to 100 or 101. Which is still high. What else can I do to bring it down since I can't give her anything else for it? She is currently resting on the couch watching a movie. She is also drinking a lot of water. She said she gets dizzy if she stands up and her head hurts. I asked her dr. if it could be the flu and she said that it's not going around right now so the chances of it being the flu are very small. I know you are not doctors so I'm not looking for answers on what she has (most likely just a virus), but what can I do to get her fever down? Thanks! Oh and BTW, she hardly ever gets sick and when she does, it's very minor. This is the first time she has ever had a fever above 101

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks. I just gave her a cool wash cloth to put on her and I will ask her if she wants a popsicle. If those don't seem to work, then I will let her sit in the bath. Thanks! It just sucks even more because her birthday is this weekend. She was sick last year for her birthday too :(

Donna,
Yes, we have been to the allergist. We did in office testing, where they had to give it to her and monitor her there for 4+ hours. They don't have a skin or blood test for ibuprofen, so this was the only way to test it.
For now, her fever is staying around 101, which is good. I haven't given her any tylenol in 4 hours. Hopefully she is getting better right now. She is asleep in my bed, so I'm hoping she will be fever free tomorrow.
Thanks for all the advice!

It most likely is a virus. If she is able to eat, give her some saltine crackers and some good chicken noodle soup. The dizzy feeling is from lying down and not eating enough. It happens to most of us when we are sick and all we want to do is sleep and lay down. I would give her some Gatorade , the electrolytes will help keep her hydrated and less dizzy. The Tylenol is working if her fever is going down. 100/101 are very low grade fever readings. I would also give her a good bath, and just continues with the Tylenol. Hope she feels better soon!

As long as the tylenol is keeping it lower than 102, you're good to go.

Fevers are always higher at night, unfortunately. They do have a benefit though... it means the body is working to fight off an illness and it's doing its job. If the fever is making her uncomfortable, then Tylenol can help her aches and pains. The room temperature bath is a good idea as well as cool drinks, warm broth, and whatever liquids she'll take.

If her fever is uncontrolled with Tylenol and/or reaches 104* I would call the dr and tell him you're headed to the ER with her, to which he'll probably agree.

actually the tylenol is doing its job....& the virus has to run its course.

the only other thing would be to keep a cool washcloth on the back of her neck...that will help bring down the fever. & it's okay for her to run 100-101.....

Doctors don't consider 102 a high temperature and I wouldn't put her in a tub for a temperature unless very high. It often chills them, according to our doctor, and is worse than doing nothing but Tylenol. The Tylenol will keep it down below 104 plus and she should be fine with fluids. The temperature won't hurt her and it's showing her body is fighting whatever she has, probably a virus.

When I was a kid, my mom used to always give us ice pops when we had a fever. It did help bring the fever down, and it was like a special treat and made us feel better. We always got the minute maid fruit juice ones. They are kind of shaped like triangles. But any ice pop would probably work the same way.

Get her in a bath tub with room temp water...and have her use a clothe to sponge herself...If that makes sense. that will help draw out the heat.

I never medicate for a temp under 100. So you are doing the right thing giving her the meds with 103.....keep that up.

Luke warm bath is the only other thing I can think of.

Remember Fever means her body is doing its job. It is ok not to get involved when the body is doing its thing.....Keeping her comfy and stable is all that matters.

If it goes for more then 4 days get her back into the doctor and checked out for something more going on then just the fever/cold/flu.

good luck and you get some rest yourself...worrying about a sick kid can be exhausting.

With my kids, I let the fever burn itself out.
I don't give them any Tylenol or Motrin, unless they are very high in temp or uncomfortable or in pain.
And I monitor them/their temp every hour or less. Day and night.

A fever will return... if the child is still sick.

Your daughter also has a headache. Also per her fever.

24 hours of being fever free, is the usual guideline, about when/if a child can go back to school etc.

Put a baggie of mostly water with some ice in it behind her neck and the cool rag on the top of her chest. This is where a lot of arteries are close to the surface. It will help keep her brain cool but if this fever lasts much longer the doc may need to write a prescription for something stronger. I think it sounds like a nasty bug.

You can give her a luke warm bath to help bring the temp down temporarily. But I agree with others 100 or 101 is not high and exactly where it should be after Tylenol.
Keep her hydrated and in bed and hopefully she will be better in a few days.
Good luck.

cold wash clothes behind her neck can help, let her have as many popsicles/freezy pops as she wants. Make slushy's out of orange juice in the freezer. Take OJ and put in a cup and put in freezer till it turns into slush. Cool baths can help

thought about calling an allergist?
I hope your child gets better quick.
