I have a 7 month old daughter. She has been a pretty good sleeper. Here lately she started waking up at 3am each night. This was right after she was sick iwth a cold. Then she slept though the night for a week or so. Now..she is waking up 4-5 times a night crying or just plain mad. I think she is teething, her gums are swollen. Is this normal or should I call the dr. about her sleeping?? I am exhausted but want to make sure she is okay! Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

If she is teething, which @ 7 months that could be very possible, I used the proper dosage for her age & weight of Tylenol before bed on both of my children when it appeared that they were suffering from teething pain & also some Baby Anbesol on their gums before bed. They usually made it through the night without any pain.

My daughter does the same thing when she is teething. It is very normal for there sleep paterns to change. She also gets up if she is not feeling weel around three and then starts sleeping through the night again. Unless you think she is in unusual pain, or orajel of tylonal don't help, I would talk to your doctor about it at her next visit if she is still waking up. I don't know if you work or not, but I feel for your exhaustion - I think the getting up 4-5 times a night can be one of the roughest parts - especially if you have to go to work or have other kids to run around after in the house.

I would make sure she doesn't have an ear infection. My children are inconsolable at night when they have one. I would go see my doctor to be sure.

I've just had the same issue with my eith month old. He did the same thing-waking up every three hours wanting to be held or fed a bottle. He wouldn't sleep otherwise. So, we had to let him cry a little bit. It only took one night. He's back to his normal sleeping routine. I say, if she's fine you just need to reteach her how to sleep again.

Are you putting some teething gel on her teeth at night before bedtime and/or during the night when she wakes up? Sounds like it may be a teething issue. If she doesn't like the gel you can try the disolvable teething tablets. Also a bit of Tylenol or Motrin before bedtime. Good luck!

your instincts are correct she is probably teething or having a growth spurt. I give Infants motrin at bedtime when my boys teeth. Good luck, A. J

My 8 month old has been doing the same thing and he is getting four teeth. I think they usually wake up a few times durning the night and go right back to sleep, but now that they are teething their little gums hurt so bad they just cannot go back to sleep. He also had a cold and a double ear infection, but he was waking up before this so I am assuming it was his teeth. We have been doing this for almost 2 1/2 weeks. Two teeth finally came through I am still waiting for the other two so looks like I have more sleepless nights ahead. Good luck I know how difficult this can be. I always give him teething tablets when he wakes up and they seem to help :).

She is either in the habit of waking up for you now after her illness or she is hurting. I would take her to the Dr. and make sure she is fine and if so let her cry for some time to break that habit.

You know, I feel like my daughter did the same thing around that age. She's just turned 1, and has been sleeping great for quite awhile now, and she started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks old. Then around 7 or 8 months she was up screaming all the time. I understand how awful it can be... for the fact that you're not sleeping and also because you worry so much about what's wrong. With Emma, I think it really did have a lot to do with teething. She had about 6 come in at one time and one right after the other, but I feel like it took months for them to actually come in! She just had teething symptoms forever, poor baby! But you also might want to keep an eye on her ears. Emma's only had 2 ear infections, one when she was 7 months, and then another a couple weeks ago. Both times, whenever we laid her down, she screamed. But this was when the ear infection was pretty bad. She could have a lot of pressure in her ear where it hurts to lay down, but she's not really showing any other symptoms. With her last ear infection, we were at her 12-month appointment and the doctor told us she had an ear infection and we were shocked! She hadn't been acting any different! But 2 days later, there it was. She had 102 fever WITH motrin, and just laid on my chest and moaned. It was the worst thing ever. I couldn't ever lay her down in her bed so I slept upright with her on my chest in her rocker all night. Anyway... I got on a rant, there, I just wanted to encourage you that there might actually be a reason your little one isn't sleeping. And if there's a reason, then there's a way to fix it. And also be assured that it DOES get better! Emma's a super-star sleeper. She definitely has her moments (or nights), but she's great.

Good luck!
-S.
