6-Month Old Daughter's Mouth Breaking Out

I have a 6-month old baby girl and over the last couple of months she gets really red and irritated around her mouth. It's almost like a red rash but sometimes get dry patches too. I know she's slobbering alot and dab her mouth constantly and use a cream called baby kisses to help heal it but it seems to never totally go away. Seems like it gets worse when she chews on plastic toys. She has always used a Soothie pacifier and won't take any other. I did put some Desitin clear on it also but was afraid she'd get it in her mouth. Anyone have any suggestions or have this happen with their baby?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses. I took the advise of Susie and bought organic coconut oil. We applied it around her mouth almost constantly throughout the day but we did use Neosporin after she was in bed for the night. I am happy to say it took about a week and a half, but the rash is 150% improved and almost completely gone. She barely has any trace of it left. I take her for a checkup in a couple of weeks and will consult the dr with what happened to see what she says. I was thrilled and can't help but feel the coconut oil was what took care of it. Thank you to everyone for their feedback. I definately know where to go when I have any more questions!
OK everyone, wanted to update on the mouth issue. Oddly enough, after using the coconut oil it almost completely cleared up, then came back all of a sudden. My mom found "Baby Eczema Cream" which I believe is made by Naturals (??) (it has the Disney characters on it) and after using it for a few days, it was completely gone! We have to stay on top of it because with the amount of slobber it can easily break out again. We usually just apply it after bath time and after she's down for the night. Thank you to everyone for all of the information!!

Hi L.! My daughter has the same thing going on. It's the pacifier. My daughter didn't want to let hers go which made it challenging to get rid of the rash. LOL! When she fell asleep at night and for a nap though I'd let her have the pacifier and when she was really "out" I would take it out of her mouth. It cleared up in a few days. Good luck!

It could be from the wetness around her mouth from teething. Keep the area as dry as possible. My doctor had me put eucerin lotion on face. Anything else could be bad for the face. The rash could also be a little bit of ezema.(sorry about the spelling).

Dear L.,

Try organic coconut oil on the rash! Apply it sparingly several times a day, and I'll bet the rash will be history within a week or less. The best thing is that it's safe to consume, so you don't have to worry about your daughter licking it.

It's easy to find in the natural foods section of most groceries, right next to the organic cooking oils. It's in a jar that looks like a mayonaisse jar, and it only costs about $5.50 for a 14 oz. jar. The brand I buy is called Spectrum.

Coconut oil has natural antibiotic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties.

I used it recently on the rash caused by shingles, and it cleared it up right away. I can't tell you what a miracle this stuff is! Do a search on the 'net for "The Coconut Oil Miracle." It's a book by Bruce Fife, and it's full of terrific information.

Good luck!

My son developed the same problem at 14 months and I asked the doctor and she said that it looked like an allergic reaction she ran some test and turned out he is allergic to latex. Your daughters symtons are exactly the same as his. I would ask your doctor asap. Once my son broke out so bad he had to have a steriod shot to help his body fight back.

It could be just a drooly mouth rash, but I would check to see if those toys have latex in them. Some people are allergic to latex. Your pediatrician can give suggestions on what to use to clear it up.

The nurse told us to use A&D ointment because it's almost always a yeast rash from the wetness. Just don't get it too close to her lips!

This could be a food allergy. My daughter suffers from a lot of allergies and this is how it started for her. I would try to avoid nuts, berries and shellfish for a while and talk to your dr. about it for sure.

Hi L.! I have a 6-1/2 month old baby girl as well, who is experiencing the same rash/dryness below her bottom lip. I'm sure it's from drooling and the pacifier. Use some Aquaphor. It works well. Dry the area and dab it on when she's going down for a nap and to sleep at night. It's helped us dramatically. I would avoid the Desitin completely, just in case it gets in her mouth. Good luck!

My daughter had this really bad when she was about 6 months old. She was drooling really badly because she was teething. She also used a pacifier at times and it was cold outside...everything combined just made it worse. Our doctor told us to use vaseline. We applied it more before bedtime...after a few days of this it got better. She still occassionally gets this at 18 months old and it's mainly when she's getting ready to cut a tooth...we just apply the vaseline when it starts up and that usually takes care of it :-)

It sounds like an allergic reaction. Has she been trying any new formulas, baby foods, juices? She might have a virus around her mouth or a yeast infection of the mouth. Perhaps talk to your pediatrician about the symptoms.

My son has always had dry skin on his face and occasionally bumps especially when he started teething. My best suggestion is Aquaphor. I talked to the pediatrician and they said don't worry about it getting in his mouth it will not hurt him as long as he is not eating the whole tube. I would put it on at bed time and by the morning his face usually looked much better. Moisturizes really well. Hope this helps!

hello it could be that your child has ecsama. im sorry didnt spell that right but anyway. my daughter has it and she breaks out mostly on her face with little patches that take a really long time to get rid of. she has very sensetive skin so just picking up toys and putting them in her mouth caused her to develope a rash around her mouth. might want to bring this up to your doctor

My son started teething at 3 months and his face was wet all the time! right around his mouth was the worst spots and then it turned into these little bumps. I freaked out and took him to the Doctor and was told it was a minor growth of bactria on the surface of the skin from the spit. Because they drool so much it causes this rash looking stuff to appear. if you want to keep her mouth as dry as possiable.

It's pretty common and normal. At some point between 4 and 6 months old, babies start to produce more saliva. Until they learn to swallow it effectively, they drool alot (it has nothign to do with teething). Many babies get a rash around the mouth during this period because the saliva is irritating the skin and it can't stay dry. We've always just put on a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the chin/mouth. It's safe. The redness always went away within a few weeks of doing this and they outgrow it.

Aquafor worked wonders for us. You could use vaseline also, which is much cheaper.

Our daughter was allergic to alot of things and even basic chapstick would cause her rash to worsen. Aquaphor is the best and our dermotologist said to use it all the time. I bought the tub and then bought little refillable lipgloss tubs. I keep them everywhere. Good luck!

I'm not a doctor, but I have heard that cracks in the corners of your mouth means you have a vitamin B deficiency. Maybe give her some more foods high in vitamin B???

Sounds as if she may have a food allergy or latex allergy. You may want to take her to an allergist or take one food out of her diet at a time for a period of one week to see if her rash changes. Good luck. My poor baby was allergic to apple juice and it took me until he was 3 y/o to figure it out.

My son used to get that, too. The doctor said that most likely something I was washing the sheets with was irritating him. I switched laundry soap to free and clear (any brand now is probably fine). I had to wash my clothes and sheets in it, too since he snuggled up to me when I held him and sometimes slept in bed with me.

Hi,
just wondering if you started new foods? my third son seemed to have some similar reactions when he started eating foods. Even now I can tell if he is "allergic" to something because of the way his mouth looks after he has eaten it.
If not starting foods then I'm not sure.................
but my doc had recommended using hydrocortisone cream on my son's sensitive skin straight from the tub while skin is still damp and clean. Good Luck!
