My sweet 5 1/2 month old son has a horrible rash under his chin and upper chest from drooling. I have tried keeping a bib on him, changing his clothes, putting vasoline on it. Any suggestions? Should I take him to the dr? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of your for the advice...I was a little worried about vasoline as well....so I am going to stop using that and try aquafor or california baby (not coconut oil....becuase I am not sure if it would bother him topically...but if I eat coconut it bothers his tummy) ....if it isn't better by tomorrow I will all the doctor as I am worried about infection as well.

I used Aquaphor on my 1st, but have since found a GREAT product...
California Baby Calendula Cream...in a small tub at Target or at Whole Foods...I use it for EVERYTHING from baby acne, to diaper rash, to cradle cap...it is amazing stuff.
Give it a try.

Hi E.,

I just took my 6 month old to the dr for the exact same thing, and they recommended to use Aquaphor. The rash was gone by the next morning. Hope this helps.

My son had this and my daughter is going through it now. The only thing that worked for us is the Johnson's Soothing Naturals Stick. Several regular stores carry it sporadically, but you can always get it at Babies R Us. I checked with my pedi and he said it is fine to use it several times a day. Works like a charm! http://www.drugstore.com/qxp150842_332828_sespider/johnso...

Vasoline actually seals off the skin and prevents it from "breathing." Plus vasoline is actually a toxin to the skin. I would try coconut oil- it's antibiotic, antifungal, antimicrobial, and even an antioxidant! You can buy it in the cooking oils section at Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, Market Street, Central Market, etc.
Other than applying something, I'd just try to keep it clean, and more importantly- dry. It'll go away, I wouldn't go see a doctor, just keep it dry. Hope this info helps!

I used lanolin when my daughter was teething and had that red chin problem, or just chapped cheeks in the winter time. It's used for breastfeeding moms, so I wasn't worried about her getting it in her mouth while chewing on things. I would avoid using petroleum-based products such as Vaseline or lotions/creams that contain petrolatum, as these may irritate baby's skin.

Aquafor works if the vaseline is not working. Put the Aquafor on each night; it should clear up by morning. Went through this recently with my 9 month old.

Aquaphor is the answer! We had this with both of our girls - no need for the doctor visit.

maybe a bib with plastic on the back so it the drool doesn't soak through to the clothes? they have that kind at target...i use them for my drooly little boy. :) otherwise if it doesn't go away, i would take him to the dr....they can give you a prescription for it...but also just double check that its not an allergy of some sort...:)

YES, take him to the doctor. It could be nothing, there are babies that drool a lot. BUT, it could be something serious, there are a few disorders and diseases that drooling can be a symptom of so you definitely want to get anything bad ruled out. One big problem can be that they have some kind of swallowing difficulty. There are also some easily cured problems that can cause excess drooling, such as acid reflux. It is worth getting checked out! Call the doctor.

Hi E.!
We have the same thing from our son - extra drooling from teething. It comes and goes as new teeth come in and is most noticable after he's been sleeping. We just try to clean his face with baby wipes and then use baby lotion (Johnson&Johnson), which seems to work. Usually, it goes away after a little while, but sometimes parts of it remain for a day or two. Of course, with more napping, and more teeth coming in, it does come back from time to time.
Hope that helps!

My little one use to get that awful drooling rash too. It was mainly when he was cutting teeth, because they tend to drool so much at that point. My doctor and the wonderful ladies at the daycare said to keep vaseline, or A&D on his little chin. My doctor told me to buy some hydro-cortisone cream and put that on his little chest. At night, I really coated his little chin with the A&D ointment. It will pass. Just do as you are doing and try to keep it dry and lubricated. Hope this helps.

My son gets that too. I put valseline on him at night and it works. Wipe him good with a baby wipe through that day and give him good baths.

Hi E.,
My eldest had this same problem. It seemed like an endless battle until I found some stuff called Resinol at Walgreens. It is for protecting the skin. It's good for ANY rash anywhere. I've been using ever since on all of our rashes. You do need to keep it covered with something so as nothing will want to grow where it is consistently wet. Bacteria, fungus and yeast love wet areas.
Best Regards,
C.

Hi E..
My daughter was a big drooler and we went through the same thing for months. I used baby Aquaphor which worked well. I also found that a tiny dab of cortisone cream worked great when the rash got bad. Good luck!

Yeah, it's just from the drool. Don't worry about it. He's probably teething and he'll drool alot. Besides the vasoline there's not much you can do besides wait it out.

Hi E., my daughter had this also as a baby. I found that Baby Aquaphor helped to protect her skin but also help the rash.
