When this happened to my son at about that age--I switched to organic milk and he hasn't had "the stink" since!
You could try Tom's of Maine solid stick after her baths/showers too.
I wanted to know if anyone has dealt with this situation with their child & what to do about it. I have a 5 yr old girl that has had very stinky armpits for about 3 wks now. I've been putting baby powder after her shower & it helps for a little while but not for too long. I'll scrub her pits in the shower & they still have a slight odor. I don't know if I should use deordorant because she's so young? Any knowlege about it would be appreciated.

i thought that kids didn't get smelly pits and stuff like that until puberty?
Hi A.,
My nutritionists advised me many yeas ago if you smell it is because your body isn't getting enough water to remove the toxins. I would give her more water. Filtered is the best. If you would like some suggestions on a good filter email me and I will show you an inexpensive filter that will give you good water that will not just take the contaminates out but put in the nutrients so your body becomes alkaline.
Have a good day.

It's a surprise to see this happen so young but its not uncommon. My daughter was the same age. I gave her a natural deoderant and then around 7 she needed an antiperspirant. I also have 3rd graders in my sunday school class who will make you want to run out of the room! I think their parents were in denial because they're young but I had to have an associate pastor to speak to the parents because I just didn't know how to do it.
Try a natural deoderant and see how that holds up in summer heat. If it doesn't, power isn't going to cut it. She needs antiperspirant.
I used to babysit a baby that was 6 months old that had smelly arm pitts. Smell like she'd been working all day in the sun with no deoderent. lol. I bathe her everyday. Only 6 months old! I was a teenager at the time and I put deoderent under her arms. She didnt rash out. I also had to start using deoderent on my daughter around age 6. I didnt buy any special kind, she just used my Secret
There are lots of studies on the affects of the animal growth hormones, used in cattle production especially, on children and the early onset of puberty.
This is very common , my girl start around the same age, yes you can use deodorant. There's a lot of safe brands.
I would ask your pediatrician what to do. That is so very young. Poor little girl.
Well my family has a good healthy diet.
Organic as much as possible.
My daughter is 8 and she has used Arm & Hammer "Essentials" natural deodorant which is paraben free and aluminum free. She's used this since she was about 6-7 years old.
She gets smelly.
Her classmates too.
It is not unusual.
The Teachers notice this too.
So if they notice, others can too.
Not just the parent.
My now 7yr old started getting body odor around that age also. I don't know what causes it to start so young. He is very tall and looks quite older than he really is, so maybe he's developing much faster b/c of it. He really did everything early...including teethe, walk, potty train, develop body odor and now his leg hair(fuzz) is getting thicker. I just treat the symptoms of the B.O. including wash frequently and apply deoderant.
I don't know... since about six years old each of my girls has needed deodorant after showers. My youngest only just started asking to use it after showers. My 8 year old is just beginning to need to use it a little more often than after showers. She typically doesn't sweat a lot because she doesn't like to get too hot or exercise enough to sweat due to her sensory issues and lower muscle tone (thanks Autism). But my eldest daughter is nearly 11 and since she turned 8/9 she needs to put on deodorant after every shower and put it on every morning. If she doesn't her arm pits smell like an animal crawled up there and died.
I know that my girls are pretty typical. All of my friends' kids are the same way. Seriously all of my friends have called me and asked me numerous times over the last few years if my girls' pits stink like rotten eggs that were left in the sun for three weeks. The boys are worse, apparently.
For us it's got nothing to do with cow's milk. Yes, we use cow's milk, but my middle daughter is lactose intolerant so she's off dairy. She's also in a phase where she won't touch her beloved soymilk. My other daughters eat a lot of fruit, some veggies, lots of whole grains, and a pretty varied diet. There's not a lot of dairy or cheese.
...I hate that I can't see what other people wrote when I click "answer" from the email digest... so I apologize if this has already been suggested, but maybe it is something she's eating? Garlic, for example, makes one smell garlicly. Onions and some spices are like that, too. Also, could be something she's gotten on her from playing outside or in the water. Of course, it could just be from sweat, but if it's smelly after a shower and baby powder application, I am guessing it's not that. Does anyone else notice? Maybe you (because you are her mom) are just ultra-sensitive to her change in smell? Around 4-5 my kids both stopped smelling sweet and got a more "kid" than baby smell. Before using deoderant, I would consult trusted friends to find out if they find the smell offensive. Deodorants can be pretty harsh and I would hesitate on using one on my young girl unless it was the only thing left to try.
My 7 yr old gets that onion smell when she sweats. I have her wear deoderant on days i know she will be getting sweaty. I gave her one of thos free samples and she loved it.
Google "premature adrenarchy" and talk to your pediatrician. It is highly worrisome that your 5 year old might be having some early puberty hormones. Don't just cover it up with deoderant.....she will need to have some lab work done and possible see a pediatric endocrinologist.
