5 Month Old Not Having Bms

Every since my 5month old baby boy was born he has had trouble with having BMs by himself. He is a breast fed baby and I do supplement with some formula during the day while I am at work. I give him baby food fruits during the day and oatmeal at night thinking this would help. I have my babysitters try to get him to drink extra water suring the day. I have to give him suppositories or stimulate him to go at least every 3-4 days. When he does go his stool is normal, not hard and no blood noted. I can tell when he needs to have a BM because he starts passing really bad gas. He abdomen isn't hard and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. I am just worried that he may get dependant on me stimulating him and giving him supppositories. My peds MD tells me that as he gets older and starts eating heavier foods he will be fine. Just woundering if anyone has any more suggestions?? Does anyone else have this problem with their baby?

What can I do next?

This is a common problem that I have heard many friends speak about...Although not "normal" and giving suppositories is just going to cause him to "need" that help and not be able to go on his own...I would suggest getting him evaluated by a chiropractor, My husband is a wellness Dr who works with families, and children...I would bet after a few small adjustments, that are totally safe for kids, he will be pooping on his own, and happy!!!

Hi Yvonna,
My now 10-yr-old son had the same exact problem until he was about 7 months old. I used the glycerin suppositories on him and they always worked like a charm! I, too, was concerned, but my pediatrician assured me he would grow out of it... and she was right!
As long as everything else is going well (normal BMs, soft tummy, etc)I would agree with your pediatrician...
Sounds like you are a great mom!

it's not uncommon for babies his age to only have a bm once a week or so. my little girl did this. as long as he's not uncomfortable and fussy then you really shouldn't worry. if he does start acting like he's uncomfortable, try giving hime something more natural istead of the suppositories becasue he can become dependant on them if they are over uses. try giving him some diluted prune juice, or mixing some prunes with his baby cereal, or mix a couple of spoon fulls of dark karo syrup in his bottle. supoositiories and otc meds should only be used as a last resort.

i feel your pain, i have a 7y/o that has had this problem since she turned a year old, & it is very hard & stressful to deal with, hopefully you want have this problem for as long, i hope not. at first i thought it may have been because she was just switching from formula to regular milk, but that obviously was not the problem, she goes for weeks without having a bowel move, she just have smears & have "stinky" in her under clothes every day, some times i have to wash her up 4 & 5 times a day, and i know it has to be a problem @ school with her smelling, i have taken her to the dr several times which isn't really getting to the root of the problem, i request x-rays & it shows how full she is with stool,i can give her laxatives & nothing, sometimes she sits on the toliet ad its like trying to help her give birth, with no results & it breaks my heart. it is very fustrating to us as i know it is for her because i know she gets teased a lot more so by her brothers & fussed at because she does it, but i don't think she can help it, but it is time for me to try a new aproach, starting with a new physcian. so if any one has any ideas or suggestions please feel free to colaborate.so i really hope you get get to the root of your problem & i wish for the best.

Everyone's comments sound good to me. Just to add that bananas can cause the no pooping, and green veggies can help to triger it (green beans, peas, prunes are good too). I would just note that our pediatrician said to not give water this young b/c it is hard on kidneys.

I had the same problem with my last tow babies. What I did was lubricate a q-tip and barely stick it in the bum and within seconds they would poop. Worked like a charm. I was told by my dr to give them prune juice, but they hated that.

Eventually they were able to take care of business on their own.

Good Luck

if his stools are not hard, and he is not uncomfortable, let him be. he will become dependent on the suppositories and wont be able to go at all. relax, it is normal if he only goes once a week or so.

It is not abnormal for babies who are breast fed to have a BM less often sometimes up to 10 days their little bodies use all the nutrients and have nothing to eliminate. My pediatrician told me as long as when they go it is not hard or bloody then they truly are not constipated. Be very careful giving suppositories and manuel stimulation like with the q tip their little bodies can become dependant on them. ask your pediatrician if they feel these things are appropriate.

Good Luck
