3 Month Old Won't Take Bottle!

My 3 month old little boy won't take a bottle. I would love any advice! He is an excellent breatfeeder (maybe too good then!). I've tried tons of bottle nipples and tons of pacifiers as well (he won't take any pacifiers either). Dad has spent over an hour with him at times for weeks now trying to teach him to take the bottle and nothing has seemed to work....

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
My friend had a bugger of a time getting her breastfed son to take any kind of a bottle until she found this one. Here is her reply to another mom about this subject:

I have the best bottle ever!! I got it from One Step Ahead the brand name is Adiri. The other brands claim to be like the breast, no way, compared to this. It looks and feels just like one and my baby loves it. It costs about $13, but is worth every penny. My baby would not latch onto anything until this bottle.

I had to use the AVENT sippy cups. My boys would never take bottles.

Well my daughter would never take a bottle neither. I was told sometimes when you introduce the bottle late ( i tried at almost 3 months) they will not take it. that was the case for me. After talking to other moms, I have learned that others have had the same problem.

Probably not what you want to hear, but some breastfed babies just refuse to take the bottle....that's the case with my 8 month old. We actually went to feeding therapy to try and see if that would help, but it wasn't successful. It's crazy b/c she can suck on anything "flesh-like" (breast, finger, neck--since she's teething) but when it comes to pacifiers, bottle nipples, etc. she doesn't know what to do---just bites them. I tried every type out there and have finally just come to gripes with the fact that she'll be attached to me for a while :) My 3 year old was the same way.

My friends always said that if I'd just not offer the breast and make her wait until she's REALLY hungry, then she'd take the bottle. This technique didn't work either and I couldn't deal with the crying that went with that. I guess we should be happy that our kiddos love breastfeeding so much :)

Good luck to you!

My daughter did this too and we found that she was confused if we held her up close to our body to give her the bottle...she wanted to breastfeed, so we would feed her with her facing us. Either in her carseat or bouncer or even just having her head on my knee (my ankle on my other knee) facing me. That worked---thank goodness!

My friend had the same problem! She finally found some bottles called Adiri, that look just like a breast and her son took that! I mean they really look like a breast..lol. Good Luck!

Have you tried the Breastflow bottle by The First Years? You can buy them at Babies R Us. Those worked best for my DD when she was breastfed, but some babies never take them. A cup might work, though.

My son was the same way! We ended up just going to a sippy cup with a removable stopper & took the stopper out. The person giving it to him just had to be watchful so that he didn't get too much at once but that worked for us. I think we tried every bottle on the market before going to the cup. Good luck!

We had the same problem, but I had to find a solution because my daughter was no longer gaining weight from just nursing. 1st we tried different ones everyday until she would at least try one, then we stuck with that one. We would try to get her to take it every feeding everyday until finally she started taking enough to suplement. It took almost a month, but like I said I coudn't give up her health depended on it.
