It's ok to give a little prune juice to help relieve the constipation at 3 months old. Just dilute it a little bit.

my son was really constipated too. Really frustrating and not much you can do at that age for any length of time. We put him on soy also which is suppost to be less constipating and ended up switching to the carnation soy concentrate it helped out quite a bit. good luck!
My best friend had her daughter on soy formula too and it caused constipation. She switched to Enfamil Gentlease (which is nicer to the tummy) and has had no problems. Try switching the formula or talk to your Dr if she's old enough to give a little bit of diluted apple juice. That is what they had me do with my daughter. First the apple juice and when that didn't work as well, we switched formula. Good luck.
It sounds a bit weird but try taking his temperature rectally. Sometimes if you do, it helps to relax the muscles and he may go. Alos try pushing his legs up, knees to chest and back out. The movement sometimes gets everything moving. :) Hope it works out, mine had the same thing and it's hell.
Is constipation a chronic condition or a one time or few times thing? If it's chronic I recommend that your neice take him to the doctor. Chronic constipation can be the result of a couple of serious disorders that can be treated.
My grandson was chronically constipated and the doctor prescribed a medication in powder form that we put in his formula. The doctor also recommended otc Benefiber which can also be put in a formula. They worked some of the time. I suspect my daughter wasn't consistent in giving him the prescribed medication, tho.
My grandson is nearly 4 and he's outgrown the problem; has regular bowel movements. His bms have been OK for a couple of years now.
If it's a once in awhile thing you could try using a pediatric glycerin suppository.
