it seems like since we started using soy formula makenzie has gotten constipated. at first it wasnt too bad but today she was just screamin and there ended up being a little blood when she was finally done :( has anyone known soy formula to cause this? could switching to lacose free formula help? the soy and lactose free formulas seem to be the only ones she doesnt spit up.
EDIT:
we've tried nestle goodstart, similac (regular, soy, and lactose free), enfamil (lipil, lipil ar, lactofree, and soy). she still spits up a bit with the lactofree, and im thinking about maybe trying nutramigen.

What can I do next?

Good Morning,

Whew, you poor little one! Soy formula is incredibly difficult to digest because of the large protein molecules. It takes a lot of digestive enzymes and gassiness that can cause a little breakdown on the lining of the stomach and intestines. It also creates such a firm stool that is hard to expell and that can cause little tears of the rectum. Probably the reason for less spit up it that the formula is thicker/heavier. Are you aware of formulas like GentleEase? The milk proteins have been partially manipulated so it is easier to digest. Look for a brand that is labeled with broken down milk proteins and see it that helps.

Good Luck

i think it would be very wise to speak with the dr. my daughter had blood in her stool (she's breastfed) and it ended up being from the dairy i was eating. the dr. may suggest you try alimentum formula (which is low allergy).... lots of babies have problems with dairy and soy. you have to be careful too because they only have so much iron..

soy did the same thing with my son it constipated him right from the start. a friend of mine had the problem of her son was not spitting up as much with the soy but was become constipated as well for her switching brands helped a little. and she gave him a little bit of juice. i would ask your dr about the juice depending on the age of your little one. hope this helps some.

i have a six month old that had the same problem for a time with the soy but the lactose free just didnt work for him he had such tummy pain and gas. I would base my decision on how long she has been consiptated and maybe try giving her a little bit of plain water inbetween feedings babies have been known to get constipated just because. i put gieger on the hypoallergenic stuff and he stopped eating all together until i put him back on the regular soy. i dont blame him either the smell of the hypo stuff alone made me sick. go with your instinct but i would say wait it out.but ilike the other moms if you are really unsure ask a doctor!!good luck

A lot of people are unable to digest dairy or soy. Moms often have better instincts than doctors. Your baby may outgrow this problem as he gets older, however, go with what works. Also, since you're giving formula, try to give him one of the ones that has DHA and other nutrients in it for the brain. Formula companies have finally realized that they were lacking in this area. This is one of the things that has been sadly lacking in formulas of the past. A child should not be given milk products the first 6 months of life.

If you have recently switched to soy give it a few weeks try at least. When switching to any formula it can cause constipation. My daughter had the same problem, my dr told me to add 1/4 oz. of prune juice to a bottle (of course she was only 3 weeks old then) This worked wonders! oh and only do that once a day. I did it once at night, I should have done it in the morning cause she pooped every diaper that night. It really helps and is safe when they are that constipated. I would try this before switching to another formula again because it could make the problem worse by doing this! Good luck! I have been there and it sucks to see your baby be in pain from it. But they are not old enough to remember it and shortly you will have the kinks worked out and know what works best for her!
