28 Month Old Taking Very Long Naps 3-4 Hours

Hi Mamas, over the last week my son started taking these very long naps-minimum 3 hours. I was wondering was this normal at this age? Has anyone else had this experience? Before now you could set a clock to his exactly 2 hour nap every day. He had diarrhea at the beginning of the week so I thought his body was fighting illness, but now the diarrhea is gone and he is still taking these long naps. The only other thing that is different is that he spends the morning 8:30am-11:30am at Montessori school. Could that be making him so tired?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies, I feel much better about these long naps and will enjoy them while they last, instead of worrying. One day last week, I tip toed in his room to make sure he was still breathing! I think your responses hit the nail on the head-he's worn out from school and is going through a growth spurt. Thank you for putting my mind at ease.

my daughter has always taken 2 - 3 hour naps. but there are times when they go on up to 4 hours and it's dinner time and i have to go wake her up. Some kids just sleep alot. she is three now and there are some days that she doesn't nap at all and is perfectly fine. i'm sure he'll grow out of it and you'll wish he would take longer naps again! : )

Definitly going to school can make a child very tired even if it is only for a few hours. Being sick has probably contributed, too. He may, also, be going through a growth spurt. Kids nap schedules change all the time. Just when I get in a routine with my son's schedule, it changes.

My older son started taking 3-4 hour naps when he stopped taking 2 naps at about 14 months. He took long naps until about the time his brother was born at about 3 years. Enjoy them, they don't last forever!

My 22 month old started Montessori recently and she is worn out! She goes all day 3 days a week. On her days off, she sleeps 3 or more hours at nap time. He may just need an adjustment period to get used to the extra stimulation. She also sleeps like that when she is fighting an illness so I would just watch him for fever but would bet it's the new school routine.

He's just wiped out from being at school in the morning. A new environment, in particular one with lots of stimulation can really drain kids (it does adults too ;), so I would just count your blessings that he sleeps to recover and isn't having meltdowns which is how some kids react to these situations.
