I am so proud of my little man! He is 22 months and we are looking forward to getting him a potty. I have started looking at different types of potties, but there are so many!!! Right now he has a seat that sits on the big potty, but I want him to have his own seat that he can get on with out my help. He likes to sit on the big potty on his seat, but has only pee peed in it once and I was so surprised that I gasped (yeah, not the best thing to do) but then praised him a lot! He is such a good boy, but I want to get a seat that he likes and will use...Any Suggestions??

What can I do next?

If he likes what you have now, get him a stool instead of a new potty, so he can go by himself (then he can flush, too.) Since you're in this process, read the book Toilet Training in Less than a Day by Azrin and Foxx. Sounds like he's ready for it.

My 28 month old is almost officially potty trained. One thing that helped give her independence and made her feel like a big girl was the contour cushie step up potty i ordered online at one step ahead. it seemed pretty flimsy at first, but my little girl has climbed up and down again and again and it has held up great. She now shuts me out of the bathroom when she uses the potty and i feel perfectly safe with her using it without any help. I chose this option because i did not want to be continuously cleaning a floor potty, plus she loves it because it makes her feel like a big girl. Check out the website. Hope this helps.

Be careful. I got one that let out a trumpet blast of triumphant music when something (pee) was put in it. The music startled my baby so much (very loud with no volume control) that he's now afraid to pee on it. Very discouraging. I took the batteries out, but still he jumps up as soon as he starts to pee and runs away looking scared.

I used a potty for my first daughter, but for my second I used the seat that goes on the big potty and actually liked it better. Also, it seemed easier on my daughter to not see me clean out the potty. I suggest using the seat you have, since he is used to it and likes it and get a step stool for him to use to get up and down.

If you do opt for a potty, the brand/style/kind doesn't really matter. It does not need to be musical or highly decorated, just functional. No need to encourage your little guy to PLAY with it. Yech!

Hi D., I just wanted to say congrats! I have a friend that has a little boy who also calls him her little man and thats what made me want to respond to you. Her little man showed interest about the same time and I told her to run with it. She did and her little boy was potty trained completely before he was three years old, which you know is really good for boys. I have had trouble with my little boy who just turned 4. He has been doing good through the day but it was the night time. I think we about have it now which I am really excited and proud of him. We purchased the potty that made music when he went peepee. He like it alot. I don't remember the name of it. But I think anyone would be good. They don't stay on them long. Have fun, be patient, and good Luck!!

If he likes using a seat on the big potty leave him alone. My son used the potty to pee and the little potty chair to poop. It took several monthe to get him to do both in the big potty.
You have it great right now and sounds like you are a great mom.

I found with all of my three they weren't interested in their "own potty". They liked the clip on one so they could use a potty just like Mom and Dad. Get a good solid short legged stool (I found mine at a children's shop) he can step up on to get himself up on the potty he currently uses. That way he can go by himself without your total assistance. I have a grand-daughter now that refuses to use the Potty I purchased complete with the hurray music. She prefers to hold herself on the big potty without a clip in and I have once again purchased a 4 legged, wooden sturdy stool she can use. I leave it right next to the potty so when she comes to visit it is right there when she needs it.

My daughter loves the baby bjorn little potty, we also use their potty seat. I agree that if he will go on the big potty, it's great (no tipping, dumping or sticking his feet in) but given his age, it may help to have a smaller one for when he wants to assert his independence and do it himself. Also, I've found that the little potty is great for travel, you can't fold it flat by any means, but it's small enough to put in a larger diaper bag or even carry in a regular plastic shopping bag and is great for trips to the mall etc. Plus, it's only $9.99. I would recommend keeping one in the car even if he doesn't end up using it at home.

It depends on the kid. I have 6 children and the first 5 learned on the big toilet and never had any problems. My #6 refused to go on the big toilet so I bought a little toilet(the cheapest WAlmart one). He actually was afraid to use the big one and went no problem on the little one. He is now using the big toilet(on his own desire). He sits on it backwards and thats cool too. So it just depends on the kid but if you think you need a potty chair you don't necessarily have to buy the fanciest out there. The kids doesn't care nor realize that he is sitting on the cheapest one or the most lavish one either.

I would continue with the one you are using. You will only have to retrain him on the regular one. I have three children and we used the seat on the toilet and when they were bigger they were already used to using the regular toilet we just removed the seat insert.

D.,
I know you are excited. I have a 22 month old son as well and we are potty training. He doesn't seem to be quite as excited as your son but nevertheless he is makig progress. Since your son is excited, you may want to go with the potty that makes the noises when he goes. I think it claps, has lights, etc. I use the seat that goes on the big potty as well as the basic cheap one that he sits on. This one is in his room where he can play or "read" while trying to potty. But again, I think your son will enjoy the one with all the bells and whistles. Tell Gavin to keep up the good work!

I suggest keeping the chair that goes on the potty & getting him a step stool. Our son was also very interested in the potty at 22 months, but didn't want anything to do with his training potty chair (that was a waste of money), he just wanted the big potty. We started training at 25 months (waited until after the holidays) and at 26 months, he's doing great. Stays dry all day & most nights. He now wears big boy underwear all day & even on the 20 minute ride to & from day care! He never did sit to peepee at home, he likes to stand on the step stool & watch the bubbles he makes when he peepees in the potty. He will sit to poopoo in the potty. He did that before he peepeed. Good luck!

I did a lot of research on parent opinions before buying a potty seat for my son and decided on the babybjorn model. I think I bought it from amazon.com. I really like it.

Personally, I would just let him learn on the big potty. I have two boys. The first one was well on his way to being trained at this age and the second one was potty trained just before 2 yrs old. With my first, I kind of obsessed about which potty to buy and so on. But it turned out that he preferred just using the big seat without any attachment seats. Believe it or not, they both just climbed right on the seat with their little agile bodies, held on with both hands and pottied. I always tried to keep a step stool in there so they could use for support if they needed it. The thought of cleaning out those little potties just grossed me out. Plus if they learn on the big one, you don't have to stress when you go out in public or to someone else's house that he doesn't have "his potty". Just a little thought. May or may not work for you. Good luck and be prepared for accidents because they will happen.
