We have one in each bathroom with a stepping stool. Put up a hook so when the boys finish they can hang training seat, close lid and flush toilet before washing hands.

We tried the cheaper seats that attached to the toilet and cushioned seats, didn't work.

My oldest son is fairly skinny, and refused to use any sort of "potty", so I just bought one of those padded seats with the "splash guard" (for boys), and he loved it! Never had any problems, and when he learned how to pee standing up, he would just pull the seat out for going #2! Another great one, for public toilets, is a folding seat that has handles on it. We use the Baby Bjorn seat and I love it. The guard for little boys is high enough so that it doesn't spray out. We've used other potties, but this one fits the most securely over the toilet seat. It's more expensive than some others but I got it at a discount on Drugstore.com. Good luck!

I suggest having him sit sideways on the seat, rather than facing forward, if the snap in potty seat doesn't fully cover the toilet seat. That way his feet can rest on the stool.

Our toilets are the elongated model and we couldn't find a snap on potty seat that would fit them correctly. They will fit over the middle leaving an inch or two open space at the front. When my grandson sits, he is in the middle of the seat and his feet won't touch the stepstool we bought him. He is very uncomfortable and feels insecure. That's not conductive to toilet training. Our bathroom downstairs is too narrow to allow him to sit sideways.We also got him a potty. He's not very interested in being potty trained, although we do know that he is aware of when he has to go; because he asks to be changed. My daughter-in-law and I going to try the toilet training in a day routine this next month when I am off track from my teaching job.

I just bought a toilet seat from Home Depot that is like a regular adult seat but has a little seat that hides in the lid that you pull down when you need it. The brand is Bemis. My son rather pee pee squating backwards on the toilet. He faces the tank. But uses the little seat for number 2. I love the seat because you don't have to keep removing the little training seat when needed. I think it was about 30.00.

We had the toddler toilet seat from Bed Bath and Beyond. It attaches to the toilet seat but you can lift it up (like the lid) for when adults use the toilet. They are blue so you don't mistake it in low light.

We have two boys and have owned several different potty seats. By far the best seat for boys is the Baby Bjorn. It is a little more money but the seat sits securely on the big potty and also has a molded "hump" as a deflector -perfect for boys. The less expensive seats have a hard plastic removeable deflector that can scrath and hurt little legs.

My daughter never really liked the mini potty on the floor either she's always liked the "big...potty" too. We got the little elmo (they have them in dora and diego as well) seat that fits inside the big potty seat. It's as easy as just setting it on the hole of our seat and it stays. It's the perfect size so that her little butt doesn't fall through (which has happened at my mom's house and now she's not willing to peepee in the big potty without it). They even sell a travel one that has been perfect for mall trips and going to grandma's. It folds up into my purse and only takes as much space as the 4 diapers and wipes I used to carry. You can get them at babies R us or at toysRus, and they probably have them at target and walmart too. It just looks like a mini toilet seat. Here's a link incase my description isn't all that great.

We got an awesome toilet lid from Target that has a child's seat built right into it. It was $20, installed easily, and helped both our girls train. We also got a step stool so they could climb up to the big toilet. Good luck!

In a pinch this will work. As soon as our sons and grandsons got trained with the potty chair and wanted to use the big potty, we had them to sit backwards on the toilet without a child's seat. This seemed to give them more balance and also gave them more room to shoot into the toilet. I must also add that it only took one day to "train" our children and grandchildren. We just waited until they were ready and announced that it was time and they went.

Let him use it. My son would use his little potty but not a seat that fit on top of the toilet, so he just wanted to sit on the big potty. He has yet to fall in. He uses a stool of course, but he sits and holds the sides just fine. When he pees he stands up like daddy. Skip a step and let him stand!

just the padded toilet ring thingy - $12 or so at Target!

We got our daughter the toilet seat ring. They come in different colors or they have characters on them. Very easy for them to put them on the toilet and take off. Just get a step so he can reach the seat. Our daughter picks up the step an sets the ring on the toilet and does her thing all by herself. She loves it and she feels like a big girl.

We just placed those soft ELMO and BLUE' CLUES cushioned seats that fit right onto the regular toilet (of course, there's the cup in the front for boys). And had a good sturdy square stool that he could step up one time to the toilet, the ones with the rubber grips.

p.s. I have the elmo and blue clues seats if you want them. clean and in good condition. ;-)

I like the one that attaches right to the toilet and has both an adult seat and a toddler seat that can be flipped up when not in use (so that adults can use the seat.) I know it comes zized for the oval toilet and costs around $40. Undortunately, I don't know where you buy it.

Just a regular potty seat at Target. Make sure it has the slash cover so he doesn't potty all over.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this since I didn't read all your replies, but here is a seat that you can attach to your toilet--it flips up just like your regular seat so you don't have to put it on and take it off all the time. I haven't tried it because I already had removable potty seats, but I wish I had know about it beforehand! Take a look:

We used one of the cheaper padded seat inserts and loved it. So easy to install and remove -- and unlike other moms who complained about the removable plastic pee guard, I loved it. The fact that I could remove it to clean it out was a blessing -- they get pretty yucky otherwise.

I second the sitting backwards - my son started to do that on his own around 18mos and I kept turning him around! Arggg!! I should have let him be! He KNEW what he was doing! LOL!! Also, the seats from Target that just get placed on top of the toilet work great. I got my son a car one and he loves it - he is almost 4 and still uses it when he potties at home, but no longer needs it - he just likes it.

I looked in to the step up potty you are talking about as well. I wanted to keep things simple - stool/seat. That way, when we are out and about he doesn't HAVE to have the same set up at home to use the potty. Also, let him sit to pee for now if that is what he is doing. It will encourage regular bowel movements, plus it may be easier since he may not reach the toilet if he stands to pee and standing on a stool to pee may be tricky at this age.

We used an insert that just popped right into the seat. It made a smaller hole so the child does not fall in. But, I gotta tell ya, the thing had a vinyl covered foam seat, and it took me awhile to realize that the foam sucks up dribbled urine like a sponge!! Once I realized that the reason the bathroom smelled like a latrine because of that thing, I threw it away. My youngest learned to sit on the potty and she got up there using a stool. She only "fell in" once, and I was there to pull her out, after that, she figured out how to sit on it just fine. I have 2 girls, so I'm not sure how to deal with boy-pee and the standing up thing. I thought the "family seat" would be really cool, but it bugs me a little. It is nicer looking so we have it in the guest bathroom, but I must say I prefer the "flip and flush." It was much less expensive and is so easy to install. You can even take off the seat without "uninstalling" if you want to. And I think the colors are fun (though they only had white available when I got mine).

My boys are content with both, they don't have a preference that they have ever expressed to me. They thought the "family seat" was pretty cool when we first got it, but other than that, they haven't said a word about one seat or the other.

We started potty training my first child using one of the inserts that sets in the regular seat and has handles, but it wiggled a bit when he sat on it and it scared him. These "flip" seats are great because they are very secure (no movement if he moves on the seat) and it is very easy to just flip up the seat for adult use, rather than having to take off the seat and find a place to set it (I really like this because I am not a big fan of clutter).
