My son have been having fever for the last 3 weeks on and off, sometimes up to 104 degrees, my husband and i took him to his physician and even the ER, he still has the fever on and off, I am worried about my son, i have been missing work for four days now and so is my husband, we both take turns, the daycare will not keep him with a fever.

We gave him the medications the physician prescribes, but still no change.

Please reply asap, my husband and i will be taking back to the ER this coming Saturday, if his health does not change.

What can I do next?

I second the chiropractor. His immune system sounds like it is way down. I would probably get him some probiotics and something else to boost his immune system. Vitamin C, and our favorite Beta Glucan. I've used Beta Glucan for pneumonia (didn't need a doctor), Strep Throat (didn't need a doctor), etc.

I would go to a local health food store and tell them what's been going on and they will direct you. They'll probably give you different suggestions, but they will help you.

My favorite health food store is called Good Nutrition. I know there are a few of them. We go to the one off of Beaver Ruin Road off of 85. There is also another one in Marietta and another one off of McGinnis Ferry Road. There could be more, but I don't know. There are plenty of other health food stores out there, but just wanted to tell you of my favorites.

Good luck!

Make sure you are rotating the Motrin and the Tylenol, but every 4 hours, not 2-that is way too much. He may have a bit of a virus as well that may be contributing to the fever. Kids can handle fevers that are a higher temperature than adults can. I am sure that the antiobiotic is starting to work and that could be part of the reason the fever is still there(or even going up), too. Make sure you are keeping him hydrated and keep an eye out for any rashes or anything out of the ordinary. I know it is scary, but I am sure that he is going to be just fine. Trust your instinct, though, and if you feel that he needs to go back to the ER, take him. I hope your little guy gets better soon and please let us know what happens.

Hi M.,

Get him to a chiropractor immediately. They have so much experience with ear infections. Their primary goal is to build the immune system so the body will fight the infection off without the addition of outside chemicals. Medications may help the diagnosed problem but they break down the immune system making it harder to prevent future problems. I'm from the south end of town so I don't have a great knowledge of the Kennesaw area but there is a wonderful chiropractor in Lawrenceville named Dr. Wayne Stephens and he is very reasonably priced as well. If that is too far, go to www.upcspine.com and look through the directory for someone closer to you.

My daughter had numerous ear infections until I went to the chiropractor and detoxed my house. She never had another one!

Godd luck and God bless!

M., listen well to the ladies who are talking to you here about building up his immune system. Medical doctors are great for some diagnoses, but do not always have the answer for the right treatment. Since antibiotics are not cleaning this out of him, try the natural immune system building products and I bet you will see a huge difference! One of my daughters had an unexplained fever for weeks on end when she was five and no MD could find the reason, despite having put her through every test they knew, including spinal tap! So if you are confident the diagnosis is correct and antibiotics are not working, it only makes sense to try the products that build up his immune system now.

I'm not sure if his molars have come in or not but my daughter has had fevers just like you described on and off for a while now. Her two year molars have been coming in very slowly. With my son he gets fevers for no reason during growing spurts. If those are not possible than I would look at a second opinion. Possible from an ENT or a pediatrician with an internal medicine degree as well. They have gone to school longer than a reg ped.

You are doing a great job!
Good luck!

Hi M.,

I suggest you take your son to his pediatrician. Do not go to ER anymore, they will just tell you thesame thing and give your child the same prescription. He might have ear infection. When you get to his pediatrician, ask him or her to check for ear infection. My son had the same symptoms a year ago, and it was ear infection. It usually comes during this time of year. Very common to 1 year old to 5 year old. Also, check if his cranky at night, usually if the fever is on and off and the baby is cranky most of the night, then is positive that it is ear infection. hope he will feel better soon.

It sounds as though you are doing what you should with the medical model. Have you thought of alternative routes? I know of a chiropractor who is very gentle especially when it comes to children. Dr. Michael Scimeca, ###-###-####. It might be a matter of his body needing a little support with his nervous system to allow his body to be done with this.
It sounds as though whatever is in your son's body, his body is trying to get rid of. Natural health food stores often have consultants who can offer alternative solutions.
I hope your answers come soon.
Blessings

Hi, My chiropractor in Kennesaw is Dr. Dave Foster, downtown next to Wild Man's. He is in Sat. a.m. 9 - 12. Very affordable, we have a great family plan. Also Dr. Albury Gardner right off 285 and Peachtree treats nutritionally any health problem, he has saved my life a few times and helps me stay on the right track. (healed from cancer woo-hoo!)

When a fever won't go away, it's the body fighting something. Sometimes it is better to investigate what else you can do in addition to the dr. route. I have had to do this for my kids and had good results. Look for the books Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child and Prescription for Nutritional Healing. In SMFHC, there are 4 pages of info on fever. They give you the dr.'s version, the diet suggestions, nutritional supplements (vit. c, herbs and homeopathy. You choose which ones or add in what seems to work. Echinacea and goldenseal combo formula will treat an underlying infection using one dose every 2 hours for 8 hours, then one dose 3x daily for one week.
Garlic can help, probably powdered dissolved in soup to get him to take it. Ginger tea. Look up the homeopathic fever remedies to see which one looks like him. This is my Bible on what to do when . . .

Hi M.,

That is quite worrysome indeed. In my opinion, you should get him to a different doctor. Sometimes medications can hinder healing. Esp. if you are constantly reducing a fever; if you do this it "tricks" the body into thinking it is well and therefore the body cannot continue to fight off the illness. I would get a second and third opinion, and don't accept the medications with blind faith. Is there a natural doctor in your area? If you happen to be in Charleston, I can recommend a couple.

I pray that all is well with your son as I write. Being a
nanny and a mother I highly recommend your pediatircian

thing going on for more than the naked eye can see.
I would be persistent. Usually with a bug 10 days is the
maximum. Best of Luck !

Glad that your son's Dr. was able to diagnose the ear infection and prescribed appropriate medication. My mom told me that I had a febrile seizure due to a high fever when I was 6 months old. She remedied that by giving me a cool bath to immediately lower my temperature. She also made the habit of giving me Tylenol whenever I had a high fever to lower it just a bit. I'd call the Dr. to make sure what he recommends to lower his temperature, if that is recommended at all. Sometimes, you can call a nurse hotline and speak to a nurse for advice before taking him into the ER just to avoid exposure to all of those sick people at the ER. Good luck!

Basic bloodwork should have been done by this point. The doctor should be able to tell you whether it is viral or bacterial from those results. They also should be able to tell you his blood counts. I also hope that they gave him a thorough examination- checked out every inch. If they are not very, very certain that it is an ear infection, and can explain to you exactly why the treatment is not working, then you have been dealing with lazy medical personnel.

The AAP strongly discourages open handed dispensation of antibiotics. At this point, they should determine a specific location of infection and use a more targeted antibiotic, if one at all.

I second the going to the chiropractor. But I would wait to spend your money on the herbs and homeopathy until you know for sure what is going on. All those things can work, but you can shell out a lot of money very quickly, and you would be better off knowing what you're dealing with and using only targeted remedies.

I don't want to scare you or be extreme, but I think it is clear that something is going on, and you should take it seriously and demand some answers quickly. Better to be an over-reactive demanding mother than miss catching something serious while it's still early. Remember, you are not there to make friends with the medical staff; use civility to get the results you need, which is help getting your child healthy. Good luck.

Hi M.,

Three weeks seems to me a long time with a fever even if it is on a off. An ear infection makes sense, but when did they found out about it? Just now? Usually thats the first thing Dr check when fever is present. At this point I would probably ask (borderline demand), more intense exams and tests. If they JUST found the ear infection after three weeks, then you need to make sure is only that and it hasn't gotten worst. What other symptoms does he have beside fever? It's been more than 24 hours since he started antibiotics? usualy, the fever stops after the first 24 to 48 hours at the most after the first dosage. Why wait until Saturday? If you are not sure about the Dr diagnostic, then you need to be direct and explain your concerns and get the answers that make both o you satisfied, is your son's health and your peace of mind.
I wish you the best, and I hope he gets better soon! Keep us posted!

Are you giving him anything for the fever? Motrin, tylenol rotating every 2 hrs? Giving him cool baths? It also might take some time for the fever to go down from the ear infection. He might also need a different med.sometimes more than one antibiotic is needed. And it could be something besides the ear infection, could be sinuses or strep etc. I would not take him in to the ER again unless he's got a really high fever that you can't get down and it's after Dr's hours. It costs more to take him to the ER than the Dr. Just keep taking him back in to the Ped. They will figure out what's wrong. And like I said if it's more than one thing then they have to tackle it one at a time. Once the ear infection is gone they will look for other things.

M., does he have any other symptoms besides the high fever? Are you guys of a Mediterrannean background on either side?

In our family, my brother had sudden, high, unexplained fevers of up to 105 for a month at a time until he turned the age of 9. We are in our 40's and back then no one knew what was happening. He would be in and out of hospitals all the time for 9 years.

Now, his son has the same thing. For the first few years, again no diagnosis. However, recently, it has been discovered that people of Mediterrannean descent (we are greek) have something called Mediterrannean fever. It doesn't hurt the child. You just give him/her tylenol/motrin every 4 hours until fever subsides. Some doctors recommend giving a one time steriod injection to stop it from reocurring. My brother opted to wait it out because by the time it was diagnosed my nephew turned 7 and it is outgrown before they turn 9 or ten. It's different in your case since your son is 2. Ask your doctors about this syndrome. It may affect more than just Mediterrannean if you are not. Good Luck. N

M.,
This the exact same thing I am going through right now. Antibiotics will take away the ear infection but this is a virus so no meds will treat a virus. The only thing to treat a virus is natural things.
Go to www.vitacost.com order Childrens Sambucol which is an immune booster and liquid olive leaf. The olive leaf tastes nasty but it kills the virus so I make my little one chase it with some milk or juice. (give one dropper full) If you give this to him 2 times a day I bet you'll see a change in him! At first I was sceptical but it is worth the try right, there is nothing worse than a sick kid!
Hope this helps. Vitacost is great too, all shipping is $4.99 and they ship fast!
Tylonel and Motrin are great but they are covering the symptoms and not getting rid of what is wrong with him.

M., I had the same issue with my son when he was only 9 months. He started having fevers every day or every other day, also ear infections, also my husband and I were back and forth to the ER.I had to take of from work or miss work. My son started having Febrile Seizures due to the sudden jump in temp, let me tell you not a good experience. After 8 months of this I find out that it was pressure build up in his ears, causing the fluid in the ears not to drain down the throat, but say in the ears causing ear infections and fevers.I asked my childs primary doc to refer my son to an Eye Ears Nose Throat doctor. Finally had tubes inserted into ears, he has not had any more fevers. Doctors at the ER are just making a guess, if fevers occur again ask your childs primary doctor to refer you to the EENT.
