I would go ahead and get her into a pediatrician. I waited a little too long to get my little girl in and she perforated her eardrum. They said this is common, but that is what will likely happen if she doesn't get treated soon.
My daughter has been grabbing her ear and saying that it hurts....but not bad enough to cry about it...She has a doctors appointment but not until the 29th of this month for her 2 yr check up..Does anyone know any home remedies or should I make an earlier appt for her?
We have an appt. scheduled for Wednesday...I'll let you know how it turns out...thanks soooo much for all the answers...it was greatly appreciated...

Take her ASAP. Ear pain is miserable and she needs help. Don't put ANYTHING in her ear, she probably needs antibiotics and stuff in her ear won't help, it will just add to her discomfort.
You can lightly tug on her ear lobe & massage around her ear to help it drain. You can also take her to a Chirpractor. He will use an activator to adjust her atlys to help her ear drain. It's probably due to drainage from allergens. My 2 yr old son sits on my lap for the chiro, plays with an activator, & doesn't mind the adjustments. Maybe you can help it drain before it becomes infected. Take care.
I have had chronic ear infections my whole life. Finally I have found some things that can help if I start soon enough - but by all means, if she indicates that there is PAIN, get her to the dr. Having said that, Vitamin C about every 2 hours, and echinacea/goldenseal (herbs)are helpful. There is a homeopathic remedy I found at the health food store - Hyland's Earache Tablets - that has stopped all but one ear infection in the past year. Chiropractic adjustments have helped more in the past several years for ear infections and allergies than any antibiotics or drugs. My seasonal allergies are GONE now.
I know that most of the comments have recommended antibiotics as the first line of defense. For me, they are my last resort. They used to be my only option, and now if I get an ear infection that does require antibiotics, the milder ones don't even touch it! I HAVE to have the major antibiotics, complete with their undesirable side effects. It is much better for me to see it coming and nip it with the above-mentioned methods.
Note: for pain relief, use ibuprofen, not tylenol. Tylenol is completely useless on ear infections, which need the anti-inflammitory effect of ibuprofen. A heating pad, or a rice sock (clean tube sock with 2 cups of raw rice in it, tied, heated in microwave for a minute and a half or so), can help with pain. Also the pain of ear infections is usually worse when lying down, hence, at night. If it's ever bad at night, it would probably be best to see a dr the next day.
Make her a doctor's appt ASAP. My son is the type that he can be a very sick little boy and you can't tell by looking or his behavior. The telltale sign is his eyes. That's normally my indication that it's more serious than it appears. If your daughter is telling you it hurts, there's some reason behind it.
I suggest you give her an antihistamine and ibuprofen (motrin). Often, an ear infection is caused from eustation tube dysfunction. The eustation tube runs from the middle ear to the back of the sinus. Irritation and inflamation in the back of the sinus (large adenoids, post nasal drip, teething, allergies) can easily close this tube and fluid then builds up in the middle ear. Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory properties and an antihistmine will help decrease irritations caused by allergies (huge this time of year).
Good luck and God Bless!
When I was little I had ear infections constantly and due to my parents NOT taking me to the doctor I have severe hearing loss. I am 47 and since I have been grown I have had 3 ear surgeries I can remember being a child and crying because of my ears. All they had to do was take me to the doctor. My Dad had us call him Dr.Dad. He alwaysed tried doctoring on us. I have always been one that when my children needed to go to the doctor I took them. Partly beacuse my parents did not take me when I needed to go. I hope this helps. Oh I had 90% hearing loss in both ears. Regained almost all back after the last surgery. Thanks, R.
HI, I heard if you warm up some Olive oil and drop 1-2 drops in each ear it should sooth it and stop it from hurting. Until you can get her to the Dr.
I hope this helps.
God Bless you and your little girl.
You need to call the dr and take her in immediately. My son suffered with severe ear infections and has had tubes twice. He NEVER cried with an ear infection and rarely mentioned it hurting. I had to learn to read his body language and every time he had one or two infections.
Please don't wait until the end of the month. IF it is an infection she could have hearing loss or drum damage by then
PLEASE DO NOT try homeopathic, vitiamin practices on a child this small. ALSo, if the infection is severe a rice sock or heating pad could burn her or burst the ear drum. Try a warm wash cloth along with the ibuprofen. good luck
By all means get her to doctor ASAP. Pain is a symptom that should be investigated quickly. Bodies respond differently to an extent with infections, but you want to safeguard your child;s hearing. And don't think you are being over reactive.
My som was the same way when he was younger, he never really complained too much about anything hurting. My mother kept him as a baby while my husband and I worked. One afternoon I got a call from her telling me we needed to pick him up and head to the ER. He had a severe ear infection and we didn't even know it. I would not wait if your daughter is complaining it won't hurt for her to have her check up a little earlier.
My 22 month old daughter had a hard time with ear infections from last June until this February. She would start with an allergy runny nose and then get an ear infection. I would never hesitate to run her in to have her ears checked. Since an ear infection requires a follow up ear check, I would take her in today and then let the follow up be at her 2 year checkup on the 29th. I also wouldn't put oils or anything in her ear until you are sure that the eardrum hasn't ruptured. I have the Dr. Mom's otoscope and an EarCheck that I watch my daughter's ears with. I got them both on Ebay and they are so worth it. I don't have to sit and wonder like you are now. At the first sign of an infection, I take her in. I can look into her ears and see for myself. After an infection I use the EarCheck to make sure the fluid is clearing up.
My pediatrician's nurse told me in February that she has heard of ENT's recommending that you swab the inside of the nose with regular Neosporin ointment. I so wish I had heard that years ago. I've been using a Q-tip to swab the inside of Meredith's nose each morning and night and she hasn't had a sinus infection or ear infection since. It makes sense that the triple antibiotic ointment would help, but I never would have thought of it.
Absolutely call the doctor now. You don't want it to get worse and complications could develop. Don't take chances hearing is a most precious sense. Call your doctor's office and speak to his nurse.
You need to take her immediately! It is highly likely that she does have a middle ear infection, and if it gets so bad that it ruptures her eardrum (from the build-up of fluid, and it will happen eventually in the absence of antibiotic treatment), she will permanently suffer some hearing loss. When it is to the point that a child grabs the ear and complains at all, that is sign enough to know it's time to get the child to the doctor! Do not wait until it's ruptured, and you find blood on the child's pillow or something!
Make an appointment. Ear infections can be serious and sometimes you will have no idea they even have one.
It would probably be a good idea to make an earlier appt. for her. Ear infections are funny. Sometimes they don't hurt that much unless they get the fluid behind the ear drum itself.
Take her to the doctor. Ear infections can be serious and the sooner treated the better...they can cause hearing loss and a lot of pain and discomfort for your little one. Take it from a nurse with two kids :)
Here is a great site with lots of info and some remedies: http://www.morphemeremedies.com/homeremedies_earinfection...
My 8yo gets swimmer's ear alot, so I had to start her using ear plugs. Hope this helps.
Both my daughters have had cronic ear infections and both now have tubes. As far as home remedies, I know of none that work. Just call your doctor and let them know. They will be able to get you in. If you don't and it is an infection the ear drum could rupture which is a really painful ordeal. Good luck! I'll say a prayer for your daughter!
Hi J.,
Both my grandchildren are prone to ear infections and that is one of the signs. I'd suggest you make an appointment specifically for her ears.
W. Q
Take her to the doctor. I had an ear infection 2 years ago and I would have much rather dealt with the pain of child labor instead. There are really no home remidies for ear infections that I know of. Good luck!
Don't mess with ears. Take her to the doctor.
Hi J.... Does she have a temperature? I would make an earlier appt... I am an RN, and it sounds like she has an infection. If she says it hurts take her in before it gets worse..
The safest, fastest and cheapest way to heal a ear infection (along with many other things) is to use colloidal silver. You can buy it at the health food store for about 15.00 dollars. Have your 2 year old lay down and watch a video or something for about 10 minutes while the drops go in his ear. And then switch and do the other side. It has always killed the infection VERY fast for us. I only put 2 or 3 drops in each ear. You may be able to get by with less, I've just never done it on the first dose. Most of the time it's gone in a couple hours. You won't believe it. I almost couldn't. The colloidal silver strength I bought was 500 pmi. I did some extensive research before I used it and I I'm falling in love with it!

Put 2 drops of peroxide in her ear and let it sit for about 30 sec. It will bubble up a lot if she has an infection. dry out the ear with some tissue and repeat over again. The last step is to put 2 drops of rubbing alcohol in her ear to evaporate the remaining peroxide. Repeat every 4 hours and it will start to clear up in just a few days.
Drop a couple of drops of warm olive oil in her ears and then put a cottonball in them. My daughter gets them all of the time and this always seems to help. Hylands also makes ear ache drops that we use too.
Some children have a very high tolerance to pain and this may be her case. We have one child like this. If you wait until the 2 yr. old check up and she has an infection, they won't be able to give her the regular immunizations that might be scheduled. I would go ahead and have her checked out. An undiagnosed ear infection can cause more serious problems if it gets in to her glands. You won't know until you go. Some of our local grocery stores (Brunos) have the nurse practioner that might work well in this situation and of course, her pediatrician.
hi J., you might want to check your local walgreens, cvc, or wal-mart they usually caring some ear drops that could help with her discomfort. i would try that then pick up some of those ear plugs for during bath time to make sure she doesn't get more water in there.
Make an earlier appointment for her!
I won't go into details about what happens when an eardrum ruptures and doesn't heal, but suffice it to say, it requires microsurgery and taking tissue from behind the ear!

I would get her an earlier appointment. My son never cried with his ear aches, but they were always pretty bad when I took him in.
Make an earlier appointment! It sounds like she has an ear infection. Both of my kiddos have had ear infections that only produced minor pain and no fever. In fact, my baby just had an ear infection, and I had no idea. I took him to the doctor because he was coughing, and when the doctor checked his ears, she said one was infected. He didn't have any temp, although looking back, he was sort of fussy (but he's also teething, so I didn't worry about it), and he was a little bit restless at night. Best wishes.
My daughter is almost 3 and has had several ear ifections. I would go ahead and take her in because if she does have an infection her ear drum could rupture way before the 29th! If it does rupture it is more painful for them, but won't damage their long term hearing.
I'd try to get the appt. moved up because it could be an ear infection or it could be fluid (that's what my son had).
J. M,Hi,my name is D.,and from my experience with ear infections,I would make another appt.with the Dr.right away, just to be on the safe side.As a child I myself suffered with many ear infections,(my age now is 43)and when I was in my early 20's they discovered that I had a cyst that should have been caught when I was a child, but was not because in those day's Dr's did not know to set up a follow-up appt.to recheck the ear after a round of antibiotics.I have had several surgery's(more than 5)on that ear and it is still not right and never will be,I have about 50% hearing in that ear now.You may even want to see if you can get a referral from the Dr.to take her to an Ear,Nose&Throat Specialist. When I see someone asking about ear infection in children,I always respond, because I don't want anyone to suffer the same way I did, especially a child, when modern medicine is as good as it is today.I also am raising my younger brother's kids and I don't mess around when it comes to their ears,I make them a Dr's appt.ASAP,their ages are 7,8, and 11.I hope this will help you in some way, have a good day, thanks D. F.
Hey J...
She may be cutting a back tooth but I would move up her visit to the doctor and or get her to your dentist for an evaluation..
J.
Well, I used to work in a pediatricians office, and they always told me to warm up some vegetable oil, not hot, just slightly warm to the touch and put about 3 drops of it down the ear and put some cotton in it to keep it in there try that for a few days a couple of times a day and see how that goes, it may just be a wax build up in her ear. If it seems to really hurt the first time you do it, then you need to make an appointment sooner.
Hi J., I am a grandmother of four, and have recently experienced two little ones with bad ear infections. My daughter took her little one to the regular doctor for this, and they said that her ears were fine. The child kept pulling on her ears, and I told my daughter to take her to an
ear specialist for children. She made an appointment, and sure enough both ears were full of fluid. The doctor told my daughter that both ears needed immediate attention. Needless to say , the child had to have tubes put in her ears. She is so much better now, and is a totally different child. If it were me, I wouldn't wait around for the 29th, I would push to get the little one to a pediatric ear specialist. Just a little grandmother advice. I will say a prayer for her, and hope she feels better with her ears soon.
I would call the doctors office and see what a nurse will say, but I am sure they will want you to come in. I'd suggest taking her in. My youngest now 15 months has tubes, and it was a miuracle saver! My 3 yr old rarely has an ear infection, but when she says it hurts, its normally so bad they have to give her shots for it. She must have a high tolerace for pain they said. Ear infections can be very dangerous!
I would go ahead and take her in to her regular doctor. Ear infections can go from not that bad to unbearable in very little time. She will probably sleep better and feel much better if you get it taken care of right away. Also, if you ask your doctor, you may be able to get the 2-yr check up while you are there and not have to go back later in the month!
I would make an earlier appt for her just incase. It could be an ear infection. Does she have her 2 year molars on the side that she's pulling her ear? If not she could be doing that because she's teething those molars. Hope that helps. Good luck.
I also think you should have her looked at sooner. 2-year olds are usually too busy playing to notice their pain until they stop...then they notice it. Better safe than sorry!
Take her to the doctor, if you suspect ear infection they will take her in today if they can fit her in. It's not worth a ruptured ear drum and that is what will happen if there is too much fluid build up in the ear.
I was told by a Pharmacist to put a hair dryer on warm and put it near the ear. If the ear pain is caused by wax build up it will help. I'm sure a warm cloth could do the same thing. ks
I know it is a hassle to think about going to pediatrician twice in a month....but i would suggest you get your child to the doc. asap...in two weeks they can do the check-up and the follow up for ear...my daughter has ear infections occasionally and usually doesn't complain either....the last one was very severe and she never complained...but it can be dangerous to let go on...
I am P., Wal mart has ear drops that i use in my childcare business, they work wonders.. just put in ear, add cotton, a few hugs and kiss and your on your way.. Have a great day....
Warm a little bit of sweet oil and drop a couple drops in the hurting ear. Have her lay with that ear up a bit, then put cotton in it. Repeat with other ear, if necessary.
Might have to do a couple times, but one treatment usually clears my kids up.
When my daughter was almost 2 she spent the whole summer with first her left ear infected, then both ears, and then pneumonia. The antibiotics the dr's kept prescribing wasn't getting rid of it so I went to NativeRemedies.com and got some homeopathic ear drops and the infections finally went away. Now anytime she starts complaining of her ears hurting (usually when water gets in them during bath time), I start using those drops and it goes away with 4-5 days. If you do try this make sure and pull her hair back in a pony tail because some will leak out of her ears.
Good luck!
Buy some sweet oil at the pharmacy department, warm it up and pour a little in her ear then lay her head down on a heating pad, sore side down. Only turn the heating pad on low since she is so little and try to keep the heating pad only on her ear, the heat should help anything in there to drain out. Also, if she has been swimming lately, you can get some swimmers ear and put a little in her ear, she could have some water trapped in there.
One small bit of home diagnosis advice...tug a little bit on your daughter's ear lobe. If she if uncomfortable with the pulling, it is very likely that she has an infection. Of course, a doctor's appointment is needed...but the pain will be evident when you manipulate her ear...hope it helps...! And get to that doctor!
I would for sure get her in immediately and not wait until the 29th. You don't want to mess with letting a ear infection go on that long, by that time she will be in maybe to much pain. Some kids have a high torrance of pain and what may seem not bad to her could actually be really bad.Keep the appointment on the 29th for her wellbaby check-up but definitly get her in for that ear!
Take her in early. Hopefully it's not, but it sounds like it is an ear infection. Good luck
I couldn't get in to see our doctor for a few days, and while waiting he told me to start her on an antihistimine. The antihistimine dries up the fluid that is in there. Try that. There may just be some fluid on it and it doesn't hurt yet because it isn't infected yet. I got my daughters cleared up by the time we got in to see the doctor. When we went in to the doctor, he said her ears looked good. (I used Dimetap) If it is really hurting her bad, then I would move the appt up.
I would go ahead and get it checked. My daughter suffered endlessly for about a year with them. The longer you wait the more complicated it can get fever, sleepless nights, and ear drum rupture. Even if it isn't an ear infection it wouldn't hurt to make sure. Good luck.
My son is never one to complain - the first time he had an EI I had no idea, I just saw him tug on his ear once. We went to the doctor and he had a massive double ear infection. I felt horrible, but I had no idea! He's only had 3 (getting over the third one now) but thats the only sign he gives me. Take your daughter in, get treatment, and when she goes for her well visit, have them check her ears to make sure the infection is gone.
make an early appt you dont want it to get any worse
What to do
Go to the doctor
Why
Even bad ear infections can be almost painless, and rupture of the eardrum can cause scarring which may lead to some permaant loss of hearing. That is why they treat ear infections so aggressively.
My son had one he couldn't even feel. I took him because he had a cold, and he has asthma. We ending up getting a shot and ten days of a rather strong antibiotic. Better safe than sorry always.
We always use a little advil and zyrtec as well with these. Advil is an anti-inflamatory and zyrtec is an antihisatmine just in case it is caused by allergies. That seems to help us, but ask your doctor about them.
Hope this helps a little.
Make an appt this week! My next door neighboor is a mother of three and the first few times I had doubts about wether or not to take my son to the Dr, I would call her. She would immediately ask me "Are his ears bothering him?". If I said yes, she said "take him in" and she was always right that it was worth it. Either he had an ear infection or I no longer had to worry. You can see a snotty nose or a red throat but you can't judge ears from the outside. I hope your little one feels better! :)
i know we like to take our kids to their doctors but the 29th is too far i would call another doctor and see if he will see her some will with a referral from her doctor. good luck on getting her better.
Ear infections hurt. We went through a period of six months where we battled them with my daughter. She never ran fever with them she would just say her ear hurt. Everytime I took her in she had an ear infection. I would make an early appointment. I have had adult ear infection and they hurt. Plus your appointment on the 29th is for her 2 year old well child check up. They have to be well for those. I wouldn't wait because if she did have an infection you would not get a well child check up. I might be wrong but I am pretty sure they have to be well.
Hey i don't know that to tell you to give her other than tylenol or motrin. My doc said Tylenol was better a controlling ear pain however I can tell you that a nurse just last week when my 4 year old son had an ear infection told me not to put drops of warm baby oil in their ear like I had been advised by a friend because it will trap the infection. Good luck!
If you suspect an ear infection, go ahead and call your pediatrician. It's better to be safe.....and ear infections can develop so quickly.
Dear J.
This is an old old grandmother's remedy. It can be made fun for a two year old. Take a white sock, fill it with coarse Kosher salt. (you can purchase this in any major food store. Usually in the spice aisle.) Pour quite a bit of the salt into the sock. Heat this in a frying pan (I know it sounds crazy, but it works)for a few minutes until the salt becomes warm.) Wrap the sock in a towel and have your little one lay down on the sock. It will give him relief. THey think it is fun. This is a good thing to do for an adult also. I know it works because I had chronic earaches when I was a little girl. Good luck.

I wouldn't use any home remedies. My daughter had to have tubes in her ears at 10months due to chronic ear infections. She is now 6yrs and the tubes have fallen out without any trouble. If your daughters ears start to bother her more you should call your doctor's office and request an earlier sick child appointment, otherwise they will consider it just a check up with no sense of urgency. I would just watch her and if you see that it seems to bother her more than make a new appointment.
