I am having a first birthday for my daughter in september. The party is mainly for her birthday but a end of summer get together also...is it okay to have alcohol there or is that too "redneckish".....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well the party went fantastic! It was a BYOB! Hardly anyone brought alcohol in the first place. My daughter had a great time and enjoyed every minute of her party. She got tired pretty soon after being passed around, so everything was hurried up: the cake, singing, birthday gifts, etc. As a whole, the party was a success. thanks

For what it's worth, when my son had his first birthday, we had it at the local Elk's club(my dad is a member) and we had a bartender there in case any of the adults wanted something. I don't think it's redneck but this is coming from a woman who also had a bartender at her baby shower for all the men who were there(it was at the same Elks club and my hubby, brothers in law, cousins, uncle, etc. all stayed by the bar while the women oooohed and ahhhhed over the gifts...lol). Have a great time and enjoy!!

A party is a party- no matter what the occasion- the bottom line is that you're together with friends and family and THAT is what constitutes a good time. We have parties here all the time, for birthdays and rainy days and windy days and sunny days- we like to celebrate life and do it often-whenever we find ourselves with people we love and some 'down-time'. With that being said, I think you can serve alcohol whenever you so desire at your own house with your adult relatives and friends. Like the others have said, as long as you're responsible and over 21, I believe that you have the right to do whatever you want in your own home as long as you're being responsible. I don't think redneck enters into it at all. Enjoy the party.

we had beer at my first sons birthday party and we are having beer at my second sons first birthday party in september too! as long as everyone is responsible drinkers it is ok. your little one won't even remember anyone drinking there anyways. my sister-in-law had beer at all her childs events also. adn so did my cousins on the other side of my family.

there are drinks for the grown-ups as well as the kids it is fine! as long as you show your child while growing up to be a responsible drinker there is no reason not to have adult drinks! have fun, it will be a rough day for you and you will need one! lol!

Hi R.. Just wanted to let you know, for my daughter's 1st - we had alchohol at her party, and it turned into an adult party where everyone was getting a little drunk, and it took away from my daughters birthday. I regretted it....I hope you don't. Its her day - the adults should respect that. Good luck!!!

For what it's worth, my sister-in-law has alcohol at my niece and nephew's parties, but doesn't allow drinking until after 4pm. this way the kids have their important b-day realated stuff over with before anyone is drunk!

I think it is okay to have alcohol for the adults at your party - even if you weren't having and end of the summer bash.

I say go for it. We have never don't it only becasue we've had the kids parties at a church or county park which prohibits alcohol. Next summer we are planning on having our son's party along with a summer bash and we will have alcohol there.
You need to do what is appropriate for you and your guests. If everyone attending is ok with it, then do it.

We personally had wine at our son's first birthday. We also have attended other 1st birthday parties that have had wine and bottle beer. (for some reason canned beer does seem a little redneckish) Good luck with your party planning!

I say yes to the alcohol...cans, bottles, wine, whatever you choose. We have had alcohol at all 3 of my kids parties and they all have been a total blast. The only way your child will know about the alcohol is by looking at the pictures. Just be careful and don;t let anyone get out of control. Have fun!!!

It is never appropriate to serve alcohol at a young child's party. To combine your child's first birthday with an "end of summer get together" you seem to be looking for a way to have your cake and eat it to. Your child's first birthday is a significant event on its own, do you want people behaving foolishly on her special day? I suggest you give your daughter her own special day- even though she will not remember it- and if possible have a smaler gathering for the end of summer where alcohol would be appropriate. No one would expect to attend a child's first birthday and have alcohol served, except for a redneck, so by separting the two you will avoid the issue.

This is the first year we had alcohol at my son't birthday party, but that is in part because this is the first year we had it at our house (he is 3). I can't see any reason you couldn't have it there.

Hi R. -

I remember when my niece turned one. My SIL served champagne and caviar, shrimp cocktails, sushi and all kinds of other fancy foods. The adults loved it!

Have fun, she only turns 1 once! Serve whatever makes you happy. And Congratulations!
