I have 4 kids and this is a first. My 18 month old gets so upset that he begins to cry, turns blue and today for the first time passed out. He came to right away and lucky did not hit anything so I am not worried about a head injury or anyting. He does not hold his breath on purpose it is the first breath in when you are about to let out a big wail he just holds it in longer and can't seem to breathe out. This has happened a few times where he gets upset and starts turning a bluish hue (with 3 siblings also very little someone is always taking something out of someones hands until we learn to share) and I try to calm him down when I see he gets upset but he is unconsolable and today he passed out! Has this ever happened to anyone else?

What can I do next?

It's called a "breath holding spell" and is more common than you'd think among this age group. There was a question about this just last week and I know I responded. Do a search and hopefully you'll find the question - lots of good info.

Oh - I found it:

Our daughter never actually passed out, but she held her breath and turned blue when she was upset. We were concerned she would pass out. When our daughter started this our pediatrician told us it was normal and told us to blow in her face when we started . You natural reflex is to inhale. Worked like a charm every time.

My son did that...I called 911 because it freaked me out.

He will be 4 soon and hasn't had this problem in a long while now...

I would blow in his face and say " take a big breath!!!!"

they cover this in our first aid class for daycare providers, it's not anything to freak out about if they are doing it after being upset. Now if they are passing out randomly in the middle of just playing, then you need to take them to the doc to make sure it's not seizures or a heart issue, but what you described, ignore it as you would any tantrum
