last night my baby boy got really upset/ startled and began to cry hysterically then started hyperventilating, went stiff and then began to twitch. He never passed out, but it was still soooo SCARY. I have researched a little on it, but i am interested in hearing about any others who have experienced this... thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My niece did this often and we used to blow directly on her face and it would startle her into breathing again.

My youngest also did it for a short while, used the same technique and it worked.

Many adults do this too when they are extremely upset. Just remind them to breathe.

My daughter used to do that. Don't worry too much. Try blowing in his face just a quick puff and rhat will cause him to suck in. Good luck! :)

One of our "family stories" is how my older sister used to hold her breath until she passed out. My mom would walk away from her, she would pass out, and then life returned to normal. She had a terrible, terrible temper as a little one, and also used to run herself into walls until she found out that didn't work either. Many an embarrassing moment for my mom with her. She's a smart grown up mom and grandma now.

My daughter started doing that at 4 months old. It was scary at first but then just became a normal part of her fussy stubborn streak. Someone told me to blow in her face and it would cause her to catch her breath. It worked. Just give a forceful blow in his face and he will start breathing again.

My daughter did that when she was a little younger, and so did my cousin's son. Yes, it FREAKED ME OUT, but if you can stay calm, it will help your baby stay calmer too. Luckily, if he does pass out, he'll immediately start breathing, and he'll perk up in no time.

It is quite common, and it's nothing to worry about. They outgrow it. It's just really scary at the time. I feel your pain. =)

My daughter (now 2) did exactly what you are describing just after turning one! Scared me to death! We did the ER, because she hit her head and then started crying and sucked in air and went limp in my arms, turned ashen and like hiccuped air for about 5 min. Horrible time for me!
They told me at the ER that she was fine and don't give her any treats after she does this. At the time I was upset that they were not taking me seriously. But then I went home and researched passive breath holding spells and felt a little better. She has not done it since. But we watch her very closely.
Good luck and I would call the Dr to make sure. And yes get it on video if possible. It is a hard thing to explain and have a Dr take you seriously.

HA sorry makes me giggle ... my mother tells stories of me doing this ON PURPOSE and my grandmother told me stories of my father doing this ON PURPOSE. It may be a bit young for your 10 month old so I would put in a call to the doc to make sure it is nothing serious ... but it does make me think of all those stories. Oh and my parents they just let me pass out ... again not sure if I would reccomend for a 10month old.

my daughter would do this until she was 4. Then my son would do this until he was 3. I blew in their faces and they snapped out of it. Its scary, but they outgrew it.

My friend's son does this. He is 2. He's done it since he was an infant. He holds his breath so bad he has seizures. I would talk to your doctor about it. My friend says that unfortunately, it's something he has to grow out of. She also says it's not as serious as it sounds (no permanent damage or anything harming to the body). But they have had many scares & trips to the ER.

If you are going to take hime to the doctor about it I would get a video of what is happening, it is easier for the doctor to understand what is happening if he can see it. Or if you can make it happen at the doctor's office (not that you like him to do it) that would be good too. Hope it works out well for you! If it really concerns you, don't take no for an answer, make sure you are satisfied with the answers you get.

hi, i used to work for a daycare where a child would do this on purpose because he wanted what he wanted and he wanted now and if the parents or teachers didnt give into him he would litterally hold his breath, and like someone else said you just blow in their face to startle to them to make them breathe again, but do not reward that behavior otherwise they will keep doing it, i hope this helps

My sister's 3rd kid did this. he would actually turn blue. He is 4 now and i don't think he does it anymore. Freaked me out when i witnessed it but there were at least a half dozen physicians watching and no one seemed to care. My sister was holding him at the waist (she was sitting on the beach, he was standing, went limp, turned blue) and just stated that he does this often and continued her conversations like nothing unusal was happening.
