I wouldn't worry too much if the doctor clears all. My daughter didn't walk until she was 15 or 16 months. She simply stood up one day and took off walking.
My 15 month old isn't walking yet. He crawls EVERYWHERE...and fast...pulls himself up on anything and everything and cruises furniture, walls, etc. Also walks well with walking toys...One day I'm not worried about him not walking, the next I ask myself, why isn't he walking yet...I guess it's just natural...He didn't crawl well until around 12 months...he did an inch worm/army crawl prior to that. He is a happy little boy and I feel is above and beyond in other areas such as fine motor and speech. My husband is very supportive of my worry; and tries to reassure me that he is fine and that we should be very thankful for our healthy little guy, but I just can't help myself. He goes to the Doc. tomo for his 15 mo. checkup, so I will talk to her, but was just wondering if anyone is or has been in a similar situation. Thank you.
thank you thank you! all of your answers are helpful and help me to just relax. :)
We went to the Doc. this morning. She too said, don't worry! She said normally kids are walking by now, but she thinks he is just being cautious...she checked muscle tone and legs, and she said he definitely has the ability...I feel much better. She wants us to give it another month of so, and if he still isn't walking or at least making more gains, to think about early intervention. Thanks again everyone!

/UPDATED 8/16/11 HE'S WALKING!!!!!!!!!!! All of sudden started walking...was taking up to 30 steps tonight! So proud of my little guy!

I have 5 kids. They started walking at 12 months, 9 months, 16 months, 12 months and 13 months. =) My boys were right around 12 months and my girls were on the opposite side of the spectrum 9 months and 16 months. My daughter who was 16 months was slow about everything. She potty trained when she was almost 4 crawled late BUT she learned to read sooner than any of my kids. She was a fluent reader at age 5 where my others were 7-9 before they were completely fluent. She made up for it in the school department although it doesn't really matter because by the time they're adults, they're all reading, potty trained and walking.... =) Good luck!!
I do believe anything up to 18 months is considered normal
He is perfectly normal... and so are you ;) A good mother keeps her eye on this stuff, but nothing you said seems alarming to me. Good luck at the doctor.
Daughter #1 walked at around 14 months but not really well until 16 months or so. #2 didn't walk till 17 months and was also a late crawler. I was dying because she was a big girl - 25 lbs at 17 months!!! But she started walking and running right away, very smoothly. I had asked my ped, they said if by 18 months she was not walking, we could try early intervention. Your son will be fine!!! Let us know when he's walking, we'll be happy for you. :-) I know how hard it is not to worry but it's absolutely fine!
My daughter will be 16 months old in a couple of days, and she just started walking 10 days ago. I was a tiny bit worried too, especially because she wasn't taking steps on her own at all. It had taken my son about a month from taking his first steps unassisted to actually walking as his primary mode of locomotion, but he was a little younger when he started than my daughter. But one day, my daughter took a few steps on her own. In about a week, she was a full-fledged walker.
Same thing with your son, my daughter has always been very happy and is ahead both verbally and in her fine motor skills. Of course, mention it to your doctor (she will probably ask anyway). Mine wasn't concerned when we went.
It sounds to me like your son is synthesizing it all in his brain. I bet that once he starts walking, he will learn it really quickly. My daughter rarely falls. Something in her little brain just clicked, and she got it.
My daughter is 16 months and is only taking about 5-7 steps unassisted, but crawls and cruises everywhere fast. At our 15 month appt the pediatrician checked her feet, hips, flexibility, etc and said everything is normal and not to worry. She also said that as long as there is developmental progression (crawling, pulling to stand, cruising, etc) no need to worry. Her vocabulary is around 350+ words (most of which she understands the meaning) and she will even finish sentences in books and songs. Her fine motor skills are also great. The doctor said when a child is above average in one area, they may take a little longer in another area. I try to keep this in mind, but of course I have my days when I really just want her to walk...Good luck with your appt.
My daughter didnt walk until 20 months. every kids is different so as long as he is progressing in how he gets around. i wouldnt worry at all. once they make the leap to walking, there's no stopping them, so try not to worry.

My oldest was 15 months when he started on his own. My youngest was 18 months. This sounds normal. One day he is going to let go and then watch out. :)
My son was almost 15 months (just 4 days before turning 15 mos.). He used to use this scoot/crab crawl and was so fast! I think he took his time for that reason. Sounds like the same thing with your son. Any day he will just start walking. Don't worry :).
Hey, enjoy your lil boy. FILM him cruising everywhere, because soon it will be gone.
Enjoy!

I wouldn't worry yet. As long as he'll pull up on things and walk with support.
HI
My daughter didnt walk till she was 16 months old.. that being said she is now 4 and seems to be behind in her gross motor development.. she is not very tip resistant and at 3.5 finally started jumping and doing stairs well.. everyone said oh she is fine but i didnt feel like she was where she should have been compared to other kids.. took her for a p.t. eval and she was approved for physical therapy for 6 months to work on jumping stairs and walking down inclines. if you still feel concerned about your son have early intervention services do an eval on him, it is free, and if he needs services they will see he gets seen once a week up to age 3. good luck!

My oldest only army man crawled until he finally walked at 18 months.
My twins walked at 15 months and 15 1/2 months, respectively. (they were born a month early, so maybe you have to adjust for that). But they are totally fine now... no issues at all. But doesn't hurt to ask the pediatrician if you are concerned.
I know it is hard not to worry, but your son is still within the normal range. Still, I would talk to your doctor about it to feel reassured. I'm confident your ped will say everything is fine.
My daughter started walking at 15 months. Like your son, she was an expert crawler. I couldn't believe how fast and efficient she was. She used to hold things between her toes when she crawled, since she had to use her hands to crawl and couldn't carry things in the traditional way. It was really cute and, I thought, ingenious. I believe that, because she was so good at crawling, she felt no need to walk. I was also reassured in knowing that, once she started walking, my life was going to become more challenging because I would have to watch her more diligently. Enjoy this crawling stage while it lasts!
My son was an early walker and my daughter took until 17 and a half months (I was almost ready to call early intervention). If he is making progress then let him be for a bit longer. My daughter crawled fast and could climb stairs and go down the slide all before she walked.
Sounds like he is walking just not unassisted yet. I wouldn't be worried, but if you are ask the doctor at your next check up.
