14 Months How Many Words?

My son just turned 14 months. I'm so excited because he started saying the word "car" all day today. He's saying about 6 words in total. He points to everything, but not saying the words yet. I think he should be saying a bit more. Am I rushing it? How many words was your baby saying at 14 months?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yes. I understands what I say. I'm almost suprised at the things that he knows. Thank ladies. I'll enjoy him being little. It will be gone before I know it.

Every child is different. My first son said little until 2 years old and then spoke full sentences with no baby talk. I knew he was fine and would get there in his own time. Walking was the same.

I wouldn't try to compare him, but just appreciate and enjoy him as he is.

Yes, you are rushing it. Most babies don't say much more than "mama" and "dada" until they hit your son's age and alot of wee ones don't talk very well at all until around 2-2 1/2 yrs old.

You are rushing it.
My daughter didn't say but about maybe 10 words anyone could understand until she turned 2 and suddenly she was speaking in complete sentences.
I have a friend with an 18 month old that only says 3 or 4 words.
Don't push him he will get frustrated.

You're rushing it. Our ped told us at 15 months, babies should speak about 5 words.

My son did a lot of pointing and 'grunting' until he was almost 4 - there is no stopping him now! :)

Kids progress at different rates, so I wouldn't be too concerned at this point.

Enjoy the quiet. :)

Every child is different. One thing I always say to other moms is to never compare your child against others. Not only now, but also in the future. Otherwise, you'll be setting yourself up, and also setting up your child for major problems, like complexes etc. As for now, it even depends if you have a boy or girl. Girls start talking faster and potty train easier, boys take longer. My girlfriend's son didn't even start saying full sentences until he was 3 yrs old. He just turned 4 and still barely speaks comparing to my daughter who's not even 3. One advice I can give you is talk to him all the time. When you hold his hand, walk up the stairs, whatever, speak about every thing you do. It helps tremendously. Best of luck, I'm sure you little one will do just great!

Thanks for asking this question. I have an 18 month old who probably only speaks about 6 words and I have been getting a little concerned. My older daughter had about 20 words at this point so I wasn't sure if she was just way ahead or my little one was way behind. The pediatrician wasn't that concerned at our last visit, but I was still wondering. It makes me feel better to see some of the posts here.
Thanks!

All kids are different. I have nephews that didn't say 6 words when they turned 2 and they are fine. My daughter talks all the time (she's 3) and somedays (when I haven't slept or am sick) I think back on those quiet days when I didn't have to answer 700 questions or explain why she can't have donuts for breakfast...Enjoy the moment you are in because there will never be another one like it!!!

Sounds like he's doing fine to me! I don't remember exactly how many at 14 months (it's been so long), but many kids are barely speaking at just over a year. And he's at the age where he may just be focusing on something else for now, and his vocabulary could massively expand all at once in the next few months. Does he seem to understand a lot of what you say (for example, you say "milk" or "bed" or "bye-bye" and he knows what your talking about) - that may be a better indication right now (kids learning language will understand looooooong before they produce, it's normal).

Also, listen to him when he babbles. He may be saying some words unclearly that you just aren't recognizing yet. As long as it is remotely close and he seems to use it consistently for the idea, it counts, even if it's not really pronounced correctly.

My older daugher had 10-20 words. My younger daughter probably had 3-5 words. The rule of thumb with all things developmental is: Is your child making progress and improving? Your son is doing fine! Keep a list of words by date - it's fun to look back on!!

Yes! He is doIng great!! My son said nothing until two. The specialists say boys speak later than girls. More words will come with time.

I thought the same thing when my son was around that age then he turned 17mths and that was all it took. He is now 4 1/2 and I'm still waiting for him to STOP talking LOL. Don't worry about it he will talk when he is ready :)
