Has anyone ever had a child with a dermoid cyst if so did they want a ct scan before surgery? Her cyst is at her eyebrow and one Dr tells me a ct scan is needed to be safe and a plastic surgeon tells me it is not needed if the cyst does not go down the middle of the face.HELP!!! Ok so let me clear some things up our Dr fefered us to a optamoligist and he said a dermoid cyst and he was the one who wanted a ct scan and I whent home and read about them and I just don't want to put her through more than I have to.So I then called a plastic surgeon and he says a ct scan is not neened because hers is over her left eye really at the eyebrow area,so then I got a call from the first Dr and he said he has no problem if I don't want the ct scan he can still do the surgery that just helps him out a little before time but he said he has been removing them before ct scans were here .So I think I will go with him he will be doing it at childrens hospital in knoxville tn and I know they are ready for anything! He works with kids all the time and does surgerys like this all the time amd is very highly recommended. So what does eveyone think now? Her pedeatric Dr has keep a eye on it since day 1 and has said it is a dermoid cyst as well. If you will look up all a opthamologist does that will give you a good idea of what all he can do. Thanks for all responses!!!!!!!!!!!

What can I do next?

My daughter had one removed from her eyebrow by a dermatologist when she was a pre-teen. We encountered no problems. Maybe you should get a third opinion from a dermatologist?

I would go with the plastic surgeon. He/
she has the skills for a successful surgery.
also since the plastic surgeon doesn't need the ct scan, I would choose them. No need for un-needed xrays. Sometimes docs xray to cover themselves in a law suit society. So my vote is the plastic surgeon.

For us the doctors didn't recommend doing surgery until he was five. So we waited. The cyst was not effecting any eye sight problems, etc. I don't believe we got any ct scans because when the doctor finished the operation he said it was a lot deeper than what he first thought. About five years later the cyst came back. My son didn't want to go through any operations so we have not had the cyst operated on again. The docs have said if it is not effecting any thing than there is no reason to remove it. So we wait...he is now 15 yrs old.

Which of these doctors is going to be doing the surgery?
What does that doctor recommend?

One CT scan projects about 40 times the amount of radiation as a chest x-ray does. By the same token, a dermoid cyst can be a lot deeper than it appears from the surface.
You don't mention what type of physician the other doctor is, but I would trust the technical skills and insights of a plastic surgeons in this type of situation.

Having said that, I recommend that the surgeon does the surgery without the CT scan. If the cyst regrows (which it might no matter what) then you can have the child get a CT scan before the next surgery which would be a few years from now.

I wonder if they are not wanting to make sure it is a cyst and to make sure it is not attached to anything important before they try to remove it. I do know that doctors can tell just by feeling a lump that it is a cyst. If that is the case, not sure why you would need the CT unless you are just seeing how deep it is and how much to remove. Maybe a 2nd opinion from a pedicatric doc and surgeon just to be safe.

Hi J.,

Since both had to earn a Medical degree, i think i would split the difference and do it this way.

If its small, forgo the scan, kinda large or growing, changing shape, or, changing color,......scan

Good luck to you,
B.
