12 Yr Old with Skin Problems

My son is almost 13 yrs old. He has tiny little pimples all over his forehead and nose. They are not large pimples like acne, but tiny little bumps. Sometimes they get red but I think it may be the skin products he uses. Does anyone have a suggestion on what product to use to clear up his skin? Ive found astringents make his pimples more red and noticeable. We've tried Phisoderm, zit creams, antibacterial soap, tea tree oil soap...the pimples bother him. At this age EVERYTHING bothers them ! :-) Any suggestions would be a great help !

Thanks

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone for all of their advice. I did try the Acne Free line from Walmart. It seems to be working. He also has been using phisoderm which has been working well too. I was hesitant to take him to a dermatologist because of friends who did and their childs skin got very irritated. Weill try that as a last resort !

Thanks All!
A.

There is something that runs in my family called "muscolungum contageosum" which looks exactly like what you described. When my daughter got it, we were told to buy vitamin E capsules and break them open and rub the goo on the pimples. It really works. Might take a few days.

i know you have seen those info mercials on t.v about that acne med jessica simpsom uses, but walmart has a kit you can buy called acne free, its a wash, toner, and cream, cost $17, and works, even on adult acne, use it 2xs a day, i f that seems to harsh use the wash 1xs a day, toner 2xs{especially in the summer with sweat and all} and the cream 2xs a day. works like majic, you will notice clearer skin in about 2-3days, but that does not mean he will never get a break out,

what i found to work best is to use the product for a while say 3 weeks, then give your skin a break for a few weeks, because just like with any product, your body will build up a resistance to it,

make sure he washes his face, and rinses well, most products dont work because soap is still on the skin surface clogging pores, therefore skin creams cannot get in in the pores.

and if he happens to pick, put some pure zinc oxide on 2xs a day and it will heal up like new in no time.

another thing i found to work, is vitamen E @ C, capsules, poke a hole in one and apply to pimples and zits as often as you remember in a day and watch them suckers disappear!!!

my skin was a nightmare, i work in a greenhouse year round, heat, sweat, humidty, dirt, plays havoc on your skin, but these things work like a charm.

My neices 15/17 both use the proactive systems...the one went to dermatologist and when he wanted to put her on meds my sister said no and put her back on proactive. Works for both of them...they order it off of QVC on tv...cost is better than on the infomercial. you can order once or by auto delivery, which they have but can delay an order if you don't need it.

Good luck to your son...it's gotta be rough right now.

Short of seeing a doctor, you could try a pump bottle of foaming face wash by Aveeno. I can't remember the exact name but it's a calming lotion/face wash that helps remove redness from iritation etc.

We bought the Acne Free 3 step progrsm available at Walmart, Costco, and elsewhere- it is similar to Proavtiv. Its not as irritating as the other acne products so the area does not turn red. This did not work wonders for us, but many of her friends swear by it. From there we went to Proactiv which also gave us some improvement, but did not do the whole job. We then got Benzoclin (benzoyl peroxide with clindamycin antiobiotic) by prescription and began using the Proactiv in the morning and a Cetaphil followed by the Benzo Clin at night. She has been clear since (well as clear as teen skin can be). All of these products take atleast a few weeks to work.

Things at that age seem bothersome.... If you haven't already, try the dematologist in your area. It''s possible it is a form of exema(sp?) where a special prescibed cream is needed. Or possibly its your son's reaction to puberty. I have friends who use Proactiv Solution and have had good results. Wishing for the best.

I realize that I will sound like an advertisement, however Proactive is excellent. After the birth of my second child I was left with impossible skin. I had irritation, like the tiny bumps you mentioned, plus some breakouts. Everything was too irritating, I even went to the doctors and got stuff, that was horribly strong. The proactive cleared me up and got rid of the irration. I only use it once a day, after my skin cleared up, the 2 x a day was too strong. I was very hesitant to try it, but it really did work. You can buy this online or some malls have it. Online is cheaper, and worth it! Good luck

Dear A.:
Sometimes the ingredients of some hair products(shampoo)can cause pimples on forehead and nose too. Teenagers are better to use shampoo without too much frangrance or moisturizer in it. Shampoo hair daily and use Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Cleanser to wash face helped my son with his acnes problems when he was a teeager.

I would see a dermatologist. Those tiny red bumps could be something more than pimples, they could be eczema or a different type of skin rash. If you continue to use astringents it could irritate them, but a dermatologist could give you perscription medication that might help.

I'd consult with a dermatologist. Skin problems like that can be caused by so many things. A dermatologist can tell you exactly what the problem is, what is likely causing it, and the right product to clear it up. I think that might be easier and cheaper in the long run than buying product after product to try to find the right remedy. Plus, he is at a tough, self-conscious age. The quicker you get it cleared up, the easier things will be for him (and you!). Good luck!

I am no doctor and my advice should not exclude seeing a dermatologist but I do have a teenage daughter who suffered from the same thing. Hers looked like little bumps too but in fact were acne. We tried Proactiv but it is costly and she wasn't faithful to the regimen so it worked when she used it but not when she didn't. I also noticed that if she switched to different products often it made it worse. See acne will and should react to a cleansing product. It will always get worse before it gets better cause the products are bringing all the dirt to the surface so he will always break out more at first. That is a great sign that the product is working. Try one product for a few weeks and be faithful to the directions, then if it doesn't work try something else. I know the Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash has worked well for her as long as she uses it properly and consistently. If you have the finances I do know that Proactive does work. I hope this helps a little. Good Luck!

I agree with the other responders. I would highly recommend seeing a doctor and perhaps a dermatologist. I also recommend Proactive. You can purchase it at a kiosk type store (in the middle of the King of Prussia Mall). This way you arent roped into the monthly purchase program although it can be cancelled or changed at any time. I would get the face wash and the repairing lotion. I've used it for cystic acne for years and love it.

Good luck.

i personally recommend proactive...i had problem skin my whole life..tried everything..saw several dermatologists who would prescribe me something that would make me break out....i was on retin a and tetracycline(an antibiotic) when i was a senior in high school...and i was put on antibiotics again for my skin later in life..they did help..but i wouldnt recommend putting your child on prescription medication if you can help it...so i would suggest the proactive line...i have very sensitive skin and had to find out on my own what type of products i was "reacting to"...i wish you and your son good luck...i know how stressful it can be to have problem skin...take care...R.

Hi A.. My daughter had a problem with acne, and Proactive wouldn't even clear it up. But then I saw a commercial for Differin gel which you need a prescription for. Hopefully your insurance will cover it, because it's about 80 to 100 dollars a tube. But my daughters skin is now clear and she couldn't be happier.

I don't have a recommendation for a skin product, only a suggestion that he see a dermatologist if this is chronic. Something is irritating his skin, and it's so traumatic to teenagers to have breakouts on their faces. My son, who is now 19, has nodular acne, which is particularly gruesome looking. He first started out with acne problems in 8th grade, and I'm sorry that I let it go on for so long before we saw a dermatologist. I thought it was just the normal sort of thing that all teenagers deal with, but it just seemed to get worse and worse. Once he did see a doctor, though, she knew exactly what to give him to help, and the problem was much improved. He still sees a dermatologist, because if he stops his skin care routine, the acne returns with a vengeance. He also has eczema, and she's been able to help quite a bit with that.

The only thing I would add to the generally good recommendations about dermatologists and so forth is that any skin care regimen should be given about 3 weeks to show improvement. That's how long it takes your skin to completely turn itself over from bottom to top, so that's as soon as you should see positive results from most things. I know that's an eternity in the mind of a 12 year old, but just stick it out.

I would recommend proactiv. It's gentle enough not to iritate and works really well on combo skin. Also, look into his diet. Does he ingest a lot of soda or junk food? I've found that drinking plenty of water is a big factor in clear skin.

Try proactive it works great. When my little sister who is now 19 was about 13 she had the same situation, we got her proactiv and it worked great. It is a little costly so an alternative would be to try a avon daily facial scrub and hydrating moisturizer would be great for a daily cleaning routine.

I'm not sure where you are located but here is a website that you can shop on for my avon rep. you can purchase the items online and have them shipped to you directly. http://www.youravon.com/hollymarshall

My first response is to take him to a dermatologist. I have had terrible skin since hitting puberty (I am now 37) and never saw a dermatologist(stupid, huh?) but I did try various medicines and treatments recommended by my family physician and every otc product I could find. None fixed the problem.

Now I will tell you that I use Proactive - the stuff from the infomercials - and I love it. I have never purchased anything from an infomercial and was very skeptical about this product. One day I was desperate and after seeing the advertisements for years I finally decided to give it a try. They have a facial wash, toner and repairing lotion that are part of the daily treatment. They also have a mask and moisturizer that I use. In my opinion they are gentle and don't dry out the skin or sting. I've been using it for 5 years and am really impressed with the results. It is a little pricey but I found that I only need to use the complete 3-step treatment once a day opposed to the recommended twice a day and I also get shipments every 3 or 4 months as opposed to every other month. I think you can purchase it with your first shipment being risk free/money back. Or you can go online and purchase a travel kit that has sample sizes. You can get more info from their website. Good luck.

Try Arbonne - www.arbonne.com. It is pure, safe and beneficial. There is a wonderful line called the Intelligence line that is patent-pending in the U.S. and Switzerland, that self-adjusts to your own skin's needs. There is also an acne line, but it is really for severe acne.

Those little bumps sound like a reaction to either dyes, fragrances or animal by-products that you might find in a lot of other products. Arbonne is herbal and botanically based, and does not use any harmful chemicals, toxins, mineral oil or animal by-products in their products. They also don't use benzoil peroxide in their formulations that can be really harsh on the skin, rather they use salycillic acid in the acne line that is much easier on the skin.

If you would like to try a sample, I would be more than happy to send you some to try. These products are unparalleled in quality and effectiveness, and there is a 45 day money back guarentee on all of their products. The products are natural, and they are phenomenal!!
