12 Month Old Wakes up Too Early

My 12 month old goes to sleep at about 7:30 at night and sleeps through the night. However, he wakes up every morning at about 5am screaming demanding for someone to come in. The second you pick him up he settles back down and sleeps in my arms until about 6:30 or so. We've tried to just let him settle himself back to sleep, but he just cries the whole time. Does anyone have any advice on early risers and how to get them to sleep just a little bit longer?

What can I do next?

Ditto on what Susan said. I don't remember exactly what age my son went through that, but I started giving him a little warm milk in the morning and quickly/quietly changing his diaper all while keeping his room dark and it helped him settle down and he would (usually) sleep another hour or so. I figured he was going through a growth spurt and needed some extra calories to make it a little longer. Pretty soon he just started sleeping through again.

It's a phase... both my kids went through that at that age. 12 months is a time of big changes, cognitively and physically.

It passes. It just takes stamina, on the part of the parents.

Some things are just developmental, and can't be helped.

They have a lot going on at this age....separation anxiety (and yes even if they are supposed to be sleeping), teething, illness, hunger from growth spurts, "night terrors" that don't just occur at night, dreaming, REM sleep cycles and changes etc.

BUT, at least he sleeps well until 5:00a.m. So that's good.
All kids go through sleep changes... then go back to normalcy... all due to their constant changes and development.

All the best,
Susan

Totally normal.

As the other two Mommies wrote, it's just a phase. Whenever my son is going through developmental changes it effects his sleep patterns, and wake up time.

My friend does what you do, but then nestles her little girl into bed with her and moves away from her gently. It took them a few weeks of this, but eventually she was sleeping until 7am again.

Keep doing what you're doing, have patience and be strong! You're doing a wonderful thing.

Cheers,
Deanna
