Hi! I'm a new mom and getting worried....
My son started yesterday with fever (first time) he was 100.4 and it was easily going down. Called ped and she said he could be teething... (upper teeth and he already has the lower ones) if fever continuous for 3 days she wanted to see him... He is taking tylenol, I'm giving him baths and lots of fluids...
Yesterday night (11.00pm) he was 102 and it went down to 101. He was fuzzy... I was Unable to sleep.... he cried every hour.... Now he is 100.4 I think tylenol is not helping.... I will call ped in an hour... Any ideas?
Thanks....

That is really not a high fever for a baby. I usually dont give my kids tylenol unless there fever is at least 101 or more and not going down or they seem extremly fussy. It is good to let it go down on its own. I would not even give tylenol since it is going down unless he is in pain from teething and then alternate between tylenol and motrin. Teething is a tough process for some. He will be ok though. I would just let it be. If it hasnt gone away after a couple days or gets really high just let it be and give him lots of hugs and cuddles. Babies can handle higher fevers better than adults can. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Tylenol never, ever worked for my children. My son was sick for a whole day. When his dad came home, we took him to the instacare. They gave him motrin for children and it came down almost immediately. Then we were up all night because he finally felt well enough to play! LOL. You can alternate the two every half hour, a cool bath, popcicles, chilled gaterade or similar or pedialyte.

I always alternated motrin and tylenol (since motrin worked better and longer). since he still has a fever even after taking the tylenol...I would probably bring him in. Hopefully he's just teething...but peace of mind is always good to have. :)

Hi There, Could be an ear infection but you can also tylenol and Ibuprofen. They don't interact with each other. I prefer Ibuprofen it lasts longer.

Hope he feels better!

normally dr's don't tend to worry unless it goes beyond the 72 hours, maybe cuz they know the body is fighting off some sort of infection. The fever is always higher at night, i guess thats when the body is most rested, just like when you get sick you tend to always feel worse at night (at least I do). Give him lots of liquids, popsicles if he can handle it and keep him lightly dressed. you can do the tepid water baths to bring his fever down, or cool wipe downs especially on his feet and other pressure points. keep his feet cool. if you feel better giving medication, you can alternate b/w tylenol and motrin/ibuprofen.

Just me but I would NEVER give any medication for a fever of 100. Switch to Motrin for when he gets higher fevers like 102-105. Tylenol depletes the liver's glutathione levels and that is our body's natural antioxidant. Keep him hydrated with coconut water and give a lukewarm bath. It will pass. Let his immune system function the way nature intended it to and don't infere with that mechanism.

I prefer Ibuprofen (Motrin or generic since recall) more than Acetaminophen (Tylenol or generic since recall). Ive always been told not to treat a fever 100.5 and under to try and let it burn itself off. I know its hard not to, but try not to worry - fevers are the body fighting an infection or virus so its a good thing in a way (trying to put a positive spin on it!!). If you do call this morning, ask to bring him in for an ear check - when my son is up crying every hour that is a signal to me he has an ear infection because it hurts when they lay down. Hope he feels better - good luck.

hi natalie, theres no cure for teething of course, and fevers go with that. somethings that might help are of course teethers, keeping him lightly dressed, or only a diaper on,(this will help to keep cool.) and there are natural teething pills out there, (they dont cure anything, just helps!.) and of course a moms love, and undivided care, and attention. YOUR DOING GOOD MAMA! your son is blessed to have you to care and worry about him. of course if the fever gets any worse, to were it gets up to 104-105 bring him to the hospital immediately!! good luck, and god bless! oh,p.s. i just read one of your answers and motrin is not good to give to a child; my sons g-i dr. says it can cause ulcers!

Fever is a natural tool of the body to heal itself and suppress viruses - it's not wise to suppress a fever in most instances and Tylenol is stressful to the body, especially to a 7 month old. Warm baths of purified water are fine, keeping the baby hydrated and rested will help. Just give your baby warmth and love and those energies will help him get well. Unless there were some really serious illness present there's not much your pediatrician can recommend beyond the obvious.
