Thank you for any advice. She takes toast w bananas or applesauce (neither of which i thought were great ideas but that's what the doc said) and I'm going to try mashed potatoes tonight. Isn't crazy about pedialyte, threw up when given 30 smthg mls this afternoon but has taken a lil here & there.

What can I do next?

The doctor is right, and it's known as the BRAT diet - bananas, applesauce, rice, toast - all things that will help to slow or stop diarrhea (even for adults). Keep an eye on her, though, as 6 days is a long time to have diarrhea! If she isn't taking in enough fluids, she could become extremely dehydrated, and may need to go to the hospital. Let her drink water as much as she likes. Poor thing, and poor you! I hope she gets over it soon!

My daughter had rotavirus when she was two months old and it was horrible!!! Most important, give her as much fluids as she will take even if it is just a teaspoon every ten minutes or so. I agree about the applesauce as it seemed to go right through my kids. Also, none of them would drink Pedialyte but really took to the frozen pediatlyte pops (note: they can get sticky and can stain white carpet!). Also, I had to make sure to smother their behinds with Desitin or Aveeno as a precaution and skipped wipes in favor of cold wet paper towels. Good luck and hope she is better very soon!!:)

Do not walk. RUN to the doctor.
Babies dehydrate really quickly.
Something isn't right.

Dehydration is a big concern. It doesn't take much for a little one to get dehydrated, so keep pushing liquids, but steer clear of juice which can make diarrhear worse. My 2 year old son doesn't like Pedialyte either, but the Gerber brand (the name escapes me) was recommended by some other moms I know. Stick with the B.R.A.T. diet as mentioned previously: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.

Start counting how many wet diapers she has per day. I think she should be having at least 4. If she's not peeing that much, call the pediatrician or take her to the ER immediately.

There is a nasty stomach bug going around, could that be what's causing her diarrhea? Or is it perhaps a food intolerance? (Rice and corn both give my son diarrhea.)

As I find myself telling lots of new moms, doctors are the experts in their respective fields, but you are the expert on your baby. Follow your gut.

Good luck!

Hi I have 2 boys Cj and Jacob (ages 5 and 7) and run my own daycare business. If it was me, I would hold off on the applesauce. It didn't help CJ; in fact it aggravated his diaper rash when he had it. Keep up with toast. Keep giving her carbohydrates like rice cereal or even some cheerios. They should bind her up so she'll pass a firmer stool. Fruit contains sugar which will replace electolytes she has lost, but may actually be counteractive. If she isn't better take her back to the doctor. If you are uneasy with what he/she tells you speak up. It's your baby, not theirs. I will be praying for you and your daughter. I hope she feels better. And you too! Good luck and God bless.

Just FYI, when my daughter was younger (3-1/2 now), apple sauce went right through her. Many fruits did as well as anything that has lots of sugar. Apple sauce may sound good but has lots of sugar....same with juice. I would water her juice down..1/2 juice, 1/2 water and it would still go right through her. She is fine now and loves her fruit. We had many explosions leaking out of the diaper. I still limit the juice for the sugar content...esp. for dental reasons. Oh, and the fruit can also be too acidic for their little bellies.

My son has what sounds like the same GI bug. His pediatrician reccomended the same foods yours did (although he threw up after toast) so he's mainly been on Cheerios and Pedialyte for the last few days. As other people have said the main concern is dehydration so as long as you're seeing 5 wet diapers a day she's okay in that respect. Our doctor said it may last 10-14 days. Good luck!

Hi, I know that the main concern is dehydration. Have you contacted the pediatrician about her continued diarrhea? You definitely need to have her seen. Until then, I would continue with the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) to see if that helps and keep trying to push the fluids, even if she only takes a little at a time. You could put some in a syringe and squeeze in her mouth periodically. Any other symptoms? You definitely want to watch for any signs of dehydration: lethargy, dry tongue or lips could be some signs. If the pediatrician won't see her then take her to the ER ,especially if you notice any of these signs!

wow, absolutely i second that, dehydration would be my main concern. even if she were to drink a lot still with so much diarrhea. I'd take her in the ER. i seriously would. good luck. applesauce, rice and bananas are supposed to help but fluid is most important.

If you want the diarrhea to stop, I found that Similac has a product that works well - in fact, a little too well. My girl ended up w/ very firm poop after taking it. I think its SimilacDR or something like it. You can find it at the drug store or BabiesRUs.

Also, the pedialyte pops work better for me than the drink. Its very salty, so they don't like to drink it.

And finally, sounds crazy, but use some liquid antacid like pepto bismal on her bottom to help w/ the diaper rash. If you think about it, w/ diarrha, everything comes through so fast you're pushing out stomach and intestinal fluids that wouldn't normally come through. The antacid helps protect the very end of the digestive tract just like it does the beginning.

Good luck.

D.,
I am Asian and most of the time I would go back to the Asian traditional remedy to help some of the problem.

Our daughter is now 4yrs old. When she was at that age; I would give her steam rice with little bit of boiled chicken, put some of the chicken broth to it and throw in some peas - she loved it. Believe it or not, although we eat lots of rice, it has it's remedy to treat diarrhea - both for human beings and for dogs.

If your child is not fussy with eating; I would just start giving her "normal" food but chop it up/mash it up to make it easier for her to chew.

Good luck!

Your doctor is prescribing the standard BRAC diet, Bananas, Rice, Apples, Chicken. Have you tried the frozen pedialyte pops or diluting the regular pedialyte with water or a little ginger ale if she tolerates fizzy drinks.

I used to boil/microwave those plain frozen tender chicken strips - skinless, boneless until well done and mince it in a blender or Magic Bullet, add the boiled rice, mince it add a bit of the water I cooked the chicken it to keep it moist and some salt. My kids preferred that with alternating spoonfuls of applesauce ( you can blend some banana in the sauce as well) Eating the Pedialyte on a stick or if I froze the flavored kind in ice cubes trays was a novelty and helped them get more liquid down. Good Luck.
