My 10 month old little girl has a cough and a runny nose, I have a sore throat and runny nose too. We are not running temperature and my daughter has never been sick; I nurse her. I know cough meds and things have all been proven "bad" so how can I help her? She doesn't have a bad cough but I don't want it to get bad. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all of your advice, my daughter and I are much better. I did exactly what most suggested: baby vicks, humidifier, and propping her up at night to sleep. Thanks!

I was told by a friend that you could put baby vics vapor rub on the bottom of their feet with socks on and that would help the cough and congestion. I am still waiting to try it on my kids. I would love to know if it really does work.

It's not so much that cough meds are bad, they are just bad if not used as directed. If you are a little apprehensive about giving them to her, but you feel she needs something like that, you can ask your pharmacist if they have anything for her age.

sounds like what my 7 month old and i just got over. at the ped.'s suggestion, we used a saline spray for her nose (which helped clear her out so she could breathe better, especially when nursing), a humidifier in her room which helped keep all the gunk in her respiratory system from getting too lodged (wish we would have had two...one for me, too), and I pulled the swing out from storage and put it in her room for a couple of nights to sleep her in to keep her head a little more elevated (a car seat would probably do as well), and we both got lots of extra sleep. We felt very blessed that the whole thing passed us by in about 3-4 days.

J.,
here are quite a few suggestions,
http://www.mamasource.com/request/18162964779499520001
including mine = i did not use ANY medications while my children were growing up, so there is my 'organic' advice there, too.
As to the coughing period, I'd suggest in the morning, and in the evening before going to sleep, to make Malt-O Meal porridge and NOTHING COLD to drink (this, until sniffles and coughing end)! Very warm porridge, before "descending into stomach, is slowly going through that 'tube' which is so close to bronchi and lungs: it warms the system from within, which helps a lot.

All the best, wishing you both to recover soon!

My doctor reccommended Karo Syrup as cough syrup. There is no medicine so you can give them a teaspoon full at a time, as many times as they need it. And you said you nurse but if you feed her other things as well, it helped my son to have green tea in his sippy cup that was made with warm water. It helps soothe the throat. Also, baby Vicks on the bottoms of her feet will help. Good luck!

If the cough isn't bad, it will probably just run it's course. But, if the cough starts to bother her at night, a humidifier will help. And I put Vicks Vapor rub on my kids feet and cover with socks. It works! Even with really bad coughs, my kids get a good night sleep.

It's so hard to have a sick baby and not be able to give them anything! Run a humidifier as much as possible, that seems to supress coughs a little. You can use Vicks baby rub also. A warm bath should help a little, and if she starts coughing a lot you could look into giving her some Delsym. It's a cough suppressant that I think your daughter could have, but check with a doctor or pharmacist to be sure. Prop her up in bed when she sleeps. I find that keeping the house fairly warm and running a humidifier usually keep my little ones from getting much worse. Get lots of rest if you can! Hope you both feel better!

Maybe it's allergies. This time of year there are lots of green things out there and lots of pollinating things as well. You might try an air purifier.

Hey J.,
Over the years of babysitting and nannying I have pretty much come up with the conclusion that fevers are different, but as for a cold/cough doctors recomend you monitor it and give plenty of fluids, wash your hands, etc... which (sorry to say it) pretty much means you have to wait it out. And this goes on up until around five or six. (cough medicine can really mess you up sometimes) HOWEVER go to walgreens or cvs and I am pretty sure they will have suckers for kids that help coughs and they also have vicks vapor rub for babies which can help with the nose.
GOOD LUCK!

We use a humidifier whenever she is sleeping and that seems to help. also it seems to help if we close the door whenever we have the humidifier on, so that it can help the room get more humid.

You have a lot of great suggestions -- vicks on feet with socks, cough suckers for kids, and of course, keep on nursing (hydration and natural antibiotics).

For you, I would suggest to take Emergen-C (vitamin section at Wal-Mart). I LOVE IT!! It's a powder you add to water. I drink it when I start feeling sick about 3 times a day until it's gone. If you catch it in time, you don't even get sick. I give half to my 1 year old too. He loves it.
