try a fork... when my daughter did that i gave her a fork to use and she took it from there. :)
My baby will soon be 1 yr old and he just will not feed himself!! He will feed himself all the goldfish in the world but if it has any kind of texture to it like a banana, avocado, pasta or whatever it may he will just pick it up and squish it in his hand! Once in a while he will feed it to himself but for the most part I am feeding him all of his meals!! Any advice???? Is this normal??

Hi Jes, you have a normal one year old, not all babies start feeding themselves by one, I have a 21 month old in my daycare that i still feed most things. Banana, pasta, it's all squishable and that feels so good in a babies hands, squishable foods I still feed the 21 month old other things he finger feeds himself, it's takes cordination for a baby to learn how to gwet the spoon from the food to their mouths, work with him and he will get, Just keep a wash cloth close by. Totally normal - just keep offering foods and he will get the hang of it. I also introduce a fork/spoon at age 1 with my kids and by about 16 months they are pros. Don't stress about this, you have a very normal 1 year old boy on your hands.
A child this age is not going to be an expert at using utensils yet... for foods. If it is finger foods, then that is another thing... and is usually easier for a child this age.
the thing is they are still "practicing" their skills, and depending on their coordination and motor skills... you DO still need to help them eat and feed them. It's all developmental....not by "age" per say. All babies are different.
Also, you want to still supervise and feed him, so as to make sure of choking hazards and accidents. Also, at this age, they tend to put too much in their mouth, thus choking.
Even 2 year olds still need help to eat.
They WILL naturally squish their food in their hands, they are learning and experimenting... this is how they learn. It is tactile.
This IS normal. They are not ready to eat all by themselves, perfectly, and like an older "kid." He is still 1 years old. It is age appropriate. Your son is normal. He's just learning now.
Feeding a baby/child/toddler takes patience. Also make sure the food is small enough for him to chew, safely.
Just don't force it and thus, making it a power struggle. As he gets older, other food/eating phases will come up.
He's fine.
Good luck,
Susan
