To me, it is the sauce! I love all different types of crusts and toppings... but you give me cruddy tasting sauce and I thnink it ruins the pizza.

What about you? What do you think makes the pizza?

What can I do next?

Magic

Chicago - Deep Dish
New York - foldover thin
Seattle - olive oil base wood fired / aka Traditional Italian (found in Italy)
California - fusion (bbq chicken, thai, eggs, etc.)

I've had them all. I love them all. Any "step" being wrong : crust, sauce, cooking, toppings... just ruins it.

((for the record... japan makes the worst pizza on the planet. No one in their right mind eats squid and creamed corn pizza))

the cheese!!! and the crust...if it's too thick (I personally don't like 'em too thick)...if low fat cheese is used - it makes it runny - yuck!!! good onions!! YUM!!! AND GARLIC!! YUMMMMMMMMMM!!!!

the sauce - well, I don't use a lot of it...

mmmm, i am very pizza picky, i for one like a hand tossed crust, soft with an excellent sauce. Cheese is the last of my concerns, personally the margherita pizza with tomatoes, basil and just sporadic dollops of fresh mozzarella is the perfect pairing to a good pie.

It's the sauce. For me anyways. I love tomatoe sauce. Some places don't put enough on their pizzas! I can tell the difference from tomatoe paste, tomatoe sauce from a can, bottle, etc. Sometimes water makes a difference depending where you buy the pizza. You can taste it in a crust. Very serious pizza eaters in my family. We are italian!

Mmmm. Hard to say. We really like crusts and don't want a soggy pizza, or a crust that's too dry or whatever. But I know what you're saying about the sauce. I recently bought a new brand of frozen pizza (store brand) and the sauce is so yummy! I want more of this pizza! But if the pepperoni is nice and crispy, it tastes almost like bacon .... oh man THAT makes a pizza for me.

Good sauce and real cheese and a crust that has flavor...the kids can be happy with the frozen cheapo pizzas but they just do not satisfy my pizza cravings. We have an incredible pizza place called Gambino's that serves Chicago style pizzas that I love.
MY significant other makes a pretty awesome sauce from scratch though, and we use the pillsbury pizza crust with it and it will do in a pinch.

Sauce for sure and crust. I like the sauce to be a bit on the sweet and garlicy side. And a good crisp thin crust too.

The crust and proximity to NYC. Outside of the New York metro area you are taking a real chance.
